A green pytest run and higher line coverage do not prove an agent-authored patch is safe: the agent may have changed both the code and the tests, while a pair of transformations no longer composes correctly. Finley Zhou’s proposed round-trip gate adds checks for registered inverse pairs, normalizers, and weakened test assertions. It is a practical proposal—not a field-validated method or a replacement for review.
Why a green test run can miss a broken transformation
“Did pytest exit 0?” and “did the suite stay green?” are useful questions, but they are incomplete when an agent can edit implementation and tests in the same patch. Tests may pass even if assertions were weakened, and increased line coverage says where code ran—not whether paired operations still preserve the intended result.

Zhou frames the distinction as: “Coverage is a side effect, not an oracle.” His proposed gate checks a specific property directly: for a genuinely invertible pair, applying the forward transformation and then its inverse should recover the original input. The proposal reports no measured pass rate, latency, or model ranking, so treat it as a review procedure to evaluate in your own repository rather than as a proven guarantee.

- Round-trip behavior: check every registered invertible pair against its sample inputs.
- Idempotency: check every registered normalizer or formatter by applying it twice.
- Test-oracle changes: inspect changed test files for signs that assertions or failure conditions became weaker, even if the suite passes.
These are complementary checks, not interchangeable ones. Round trips test composition; idempotency tests stability after normalization; assertion-delta review looks for changes to the tests that define expected behavior.
Register only operations with a real inverse
Keep a reviewed registry in the repository that names each pair, its forward and backward callables, and representative sample values. Zhou’s illustrative Python example uses a RoundTrip record for these fields. For each sample, the core check is conceptually:

assert result == originalThe example also checks whether the forward function mutated its input. That matters because a round trip can appear to succeed while the transformation has altered data the caller expected to retain. Copying the sample before the call gives the comparison a stable reference.

Do not invent an inverse
Register round trips only where a valid inverse exists for the intended domain. Hashing, HMAC, destructive deletes, CSS changes, ML training loops, and fire-and-forget event emitters are examples of operations that may be one-way or have no meaningful inverse. For such code, use appropriate behavior-specific tests instead of asserting a false round-trip property.
Check normalizers and formatters for idempotency
A normalizer or formatter often should leave its output unchanged when run again. Register the callable and representative samples, then compare one application with two:

assert twice == onceZhou’s example uses path normalization and five illustrative path samples. Idempotency is a separate invariant from reversibility: a normalizer can be stable without having an inverse, and an invertible pair need not be a normalizer.

Review assertion changes, not just test outcomes
The third step compares changed test files for potential weakening. The proposal calls out weakened assertions, removed assertRaises cases, inflated timeouts, and falling assertion counts. These signals can help reviewers identify suspicious edits, but the scanner is a heuristic—not a complete semantic analysis. It can miss equivalent refactors and assertion patterns outside its rules.

The published implementation example is incomplete, so do not treat it as drop-in production code. If you build this check, make its rules visible and reviewable, and fail on findings unless a human-typed waiver file names the exact test function being waived. A waiver should identify the specific exception rather than silently disabling the check for an entire file or suite.

Zhou proposes running the invariant tests separately from unrelated tests so the gate has a clear result:
python -m pytest tests/test_invariants.py -q --tb=shortMake that command a required check for the relevant patches, alongside the assertion-delta check for test files changed in the same patch. The registry and samples should be reviewed repository assets; an agent should not silently remove existing entries. When a pair or sample changes, reviewers can then assess the contract change explicitly.

Know what a passing result cannot prove
- Registry completeness: the gate covers only registered operations and samples. As Zhou puts it, “The samples are the contract.” New code paths may need new representative samples.
- Semantic correctness: a round trip can pass while the result is wrong in ways the equality check does not express.
- Input robustness and security: passing checks do not establish correct handling of malformed input or secure behavior.
- Complexity and release readiness: the checks do not show that an implementation has acceptable performance or is ready to ship.
- Complete test-oracle review: an assertion scanner may miss meaningful weakening or flag changes that preserve meaning.
Use the gate as one merge-safety axis. Type checks, human review, and security review still matter; passing these checks alone does not establish that a patch is ready to ship.
