A migration by itself does not make an environment safer. First establish your current version and support coverage, compare supported paths, then validate the target and recovery plan before moving production workloads.
What protection gap would a VMware change close?
Start with the exposure you can identify, not the decision to leave. Two lifecycle questions are especially important: whether the installed product is still within service, and whether the organization has active Support and Subscription coverage.

Check the product lifecycle
VMware by Broadcom’s March 31, 2025 end-of-service notice set October 2, 2025 as the end of service for vSphere 7.x and vSAN 7.x. That date has passed. The notice says customers still running those versions would no longer receive product support, security patches or updates under the announced lifecycle policy. This establishes a support and maintenance exposure; it does not establish that every such installation is already compromised.

Check contract coverage separately
Broadcom’s support guidance says that when Support and Subscription coverage expires, access to new patches, security updates and releases is restricted, and customers can no longer open technical support requests. The guidance identifies a security-posture risk associated with missing non-critical patches. Do not conflate this with the product lifecycle date: check both the version’s service status and the coverage on your own account. The sources do not say that a perpetual license stops running when support expires.

Should you renew, upgrade within VMware, or migrate?
There is no universal best route. The right choice depends on what risk you are solving, what capabilities your workloads need, your contract and entitlements, and whether your team can operate the destination safely.
| Path | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Renew or maintain current coverage | The current deployment remains suitable and a coverage gap is the main issue. | Confirm renewal terms, entitlement scope, support access and the product’s lifecycle with Broadcom or your reseller. Pricing and rights depend on your account and contract. |
| Upgrade within VMware | You want to remain on a VMware path and the required capabilities are available in a supported offering. | Check the required features, eligible upgrade route, component prerequisites, subscription terms and licensed core capacity. |
| Stage a migration to another platform | The current support, commercial or operational position cannot be addressed acceptably by a VMware route. | Validate workload and feature fit, dependencies, recovery, staff readiness, migration effort and rollback criteria in a representative pilot. |
Broadcom announced a transition from perpetual VMware licensing toward subscription offerings. That announcement does not determine any individual customer’s renewal rights or price. Inspect your contract, entitlements and account portal rather than assuming that an old purchase maps directly to a current offer.
What do the current VMware offerings include?
VMware’s feature comparison describes VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) as an integrated platform combining vSphere, Kubernetes services, operations, automation, vSAN and NSX. VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) is described as a more limited collection that includes vSphere, Kubernetes services, operations and vSAN. These are vendor descriptions, not proof that either bundle matches a particular legacy environment one-to-one.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
Compare the capabilities you actually use—compute, storage, networking, Kubernetes, management and recovery—with the offering and architecture under consideration. The feature comparison also presents vendor-recommended paths from earlier vSphere, vSAN, NSX, Aria and related products to newer VCF or VVF offerings. Treat those as routes to evaluate, not neutral evidence that upgrading is best for every estate.
Account for the vSphere 8-to-9 licensing change
Broadcom’s knowledge-base guidance says moving from vSphere 8.x perpetual keys to vSphere 9 uses subscription-based licensing and a new portal workflow; the older product-key upgrade route may not work. Confirm the applicable workflow and entitlement in your account before planning the change.
Check VCF 9 readiness before conversion or import
VMware’s April 16, 2026 VCF 9 transition guidance sets minimum component-version prerequisites for conversion or import and directs customers on earlier versions to upgrade through existing processes first. It also describes licensing centralized in VMware Cloud Foundation Operations, using term-based subscriptions for a specified number of cores. Inventory component versions and dependencies, then confirm the current prerequisites and capacity requirements before scheduling the transition.

How can you validate an exit before production cutover?
Use one decision process for a VMware upgrade and a move to another platform. The goal is to establish that the proposed path addresses the identified gap without introducing untested workload, recovery or operating risks.
- Inventory the estate. Record product and component versions, support coverage, entitlements, workloads, dependencies and the storage, networking, management and recovery capabilities in use.
- Name the gap. Identify whether the issue is end of service, lapsed patch or support access, licensing terms, or an operational requirement. Separate verified facts from assumptions about future risk or cost.
- Compare viable paths. Assess renewal, a supported VMware upgrade and credible alternatives against feature fit, compatibility sequence, licensing capacity, support access, staff capability and total cost. No universal savings or security-outcome comparison is established by the vendor materials cited here.
- Pilot representative workloads. Test application behavior, performance requirements, monitoring, patching and day-to-day administration on the target. Include dependencies that could make a simple workload move incomplete.
- Exercise recovery and rollback. Verify that backups can be restored, recovery procedures work on the target, and rollback criteria are explicit before production cutover.
- Stage the change. Move workloads in controlled groups, review results against agreed criteria, and retain a workable recovery path while the migration is underway.
These steps are planning guidance, not a vendor-validated migration recipe. The cited sources cover VMware lifecycle, licensing and product descriptions; they do not provide an independent comparison of migration security outcomes, customer experience or costs.
What evidence makes the exit a protection upgrade?
The case is strongest when the change demonstrably closes a specific gap—for example, a product that has passed its stated service date or unavailable patch and support access—and the target has been checked against workload needs, compatibility, recovery and operating capacity. If the current environment can be brought onto a supported path and meets requirements, leaving VMware is not automatically safer. If the destination is unvalidated, the move may exchange a known exposure for operational uncertainty rather than reduce risk.
