It can help show where to investigate; it does not identify the cause of a leak, insulation problem, or mechanical fault by itself. For occasional curiosity, a dedicated accessory may be hard to justify.
What a thermal camera adds to an iPhone
Your iPhone’s ordinary camera records visible light. A thermal camera instead captures infrared patterns that represent differences in surface temperature. That makes it useful for spotting areas that look warmer or cooler than their surroundings, which can guide a closer inspection.

FLIR’s Edge Pro combines thermal imagery with an onboard visible-light camera. Its MSX processing adds visible-light details to the thermal image to make edges and features easier to recognize. FLIR also describes VividIR processing that combines multiple images and can upscale the image; this is distinct from the device’s native thermal resolution of 160 × 120 pixels. The processed 480 × 360 super-resolution figure is not the sensor’s native resolution. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test results. Teledyne FLIR Edge Pro product page
When it is useful
Checking a home for areas that merit inspection
FLIR says its app includes inspection guides for finding air leaks, insulation gaps, and moisture buildup around a house. A thermal pattern can help direct attention to a particular area, but it cannot establish the underlying cause on its own. Conditions, materials, and other factors can affect what appears in an image.

Troubleshooting selected vehicle systems
FLIR also cites automotive checks involving seats, disc brakes, defoggers, and defrosters. These are specific inspection tasks, not a promise that a thermal image will diagnose every vehicle problem.
Repeated maintenance or inspection work
The accessory is easiest to justify if you routinely inspect buildings, vehicles, or equipment and can use temperature patterns to decide where to investigate next. For a single project or occasional experiment, consider whether borrowing or hiring access to a thermal camera would meet the need instead.

Compatibility and connection: check before buying
FLIR lists iOS 17 or later for the Edge Pro and directs customers to its compatibility checker to confirm support for a specific device. Check the exact iPhone model and operating-system version there before purchasing, particularly because product naming and device support can change. The wireless design is also listed as compatible with supported Android devices, so the accessory is not limited to iPhones.
For iPhone use, FLIR describes clipping the camera to the phone or using it detached and wirelessly. USB-C is listed as the charging connection; do not mistake that charging method for a requirement to attach the camera physically to the iPhone while inspecting.

Understand the measurement specifications
FLIR lists a native thermal resolution of 160 × 120, thermal sensitivity of 70 mK, and fixed focus from 30 cm to infinity. Its published object-temperature ranges are −20°C to 120°C and 0°C to 400°C. The product page also states accuracy of ±3°C (5.4°F) or ±5%, with the following conditions: 60 seconds after startup, the unit at 15°C–35°C, and the scene at 5°C–120°C. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of accuracy in every environment or a substitute for a dedicated measuring instrument where precision matters. Teledyne FLIR Edge Pro product page
Resolution, sensitivity, temperature range, and stated accuracy describe different things. Resolution is the number of native thermal image pixels; sensitivity describes the ability to distinguish small temperature differences; range identifies the temperatures the device is specified to measure; and accuracy is subject to the stated conditions. Image processing may make details more legible, but it does not turn the native sensor resolution into the higher processed figure.
