Sony’s patent application describes a way for a game controller to relay payment-method information to a console. It does not show that today’s PS5 DualSense can read credit cards, or that Sony has announced plans to sell a controller with this capability.
Can a PS5 controller read a credit card?
Not on the evidence available in Sony’s application. The filing outlines a proposed process for transferring payment-method information from a nearby electronic device, through a controller, to a game console. It does not establish that an ordinary current DualSense has the hardware or software to do this, or that a purchase could be completed without other authentication.

The application is titled “Video Game Controller-Driven Information Transfer.” Its independent method claim describes a controller detecting a nearby device, emitting a signal, receiving a notification and then receiving a message containing a player’s payment-method information. The controller passes that information to the console in response to an event at the console. Read the published application.

The claims describe proximity detection as part of the process, rather than proving that a controller reads the physical data on a bank card. Dependent claims identify NFC, Bluetooth and physical contact as possible ways to detect a nearby device. These are described mechanisms in the application, not confirmation of a particular card, payment service or finished implementation.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
In practical terms, the controller is presented as a relay: it receives payment-method information and forwards it to the console after a console-side event. The filing does not specify a complete retail payment flow, establish which authentication steps would be required, or provide evidence about security or payment processing in a commercial product.

A published patent application documents a proposed invention; it is not a product announcement or proof of retail availability. Tom’s Hardware reported that the drawings resemble a DualSense controller, but that is an observation about the illustrations—not confirmation that Sony will add the feature to a current or future controller. Tom’s Hardware’s report likewise offers no confirmation that Sony is implementing the concept.
The application’s publication confirms its filing and publication dates, but those dates alone do not establish its current prosecution status. Nor does the language described in GamesRadar+’s coverage establish that the application specifically covers bank cards as a supported, working product feature. GamesRadar+’s report discusses that distinction.

What this means for DualSense owners
There is no basis in the cited application or reporting to treat a current DualSense as a credit-card reader, or to expect a compatible controller, card, accessory or payment option to be available for purchase. The patent describes a possible controller-driven transfer of payment information; whether Sony develops or releases it remains unconfirmed.
