A navigable 3D universe can make relationships among complex data easier to explore, but real projects show where the format fits—not that it is automatically better than a conventional dashboard. NASA has used a 3D visualization to bring together field-campaign data, while astronomy and research-discovery platforms use spatial views for different purposes. The title promises a first-person account, but without details about the dashboard, implementation, or evaluation, no personal lessons can be responsibly attributed to its author.
What a 3D data interface can do
A 3D interface gives information a spatial structure: users can move through a scene, inspect locations, and see how elements relate. That can suit data with meaningful spatial or navigational relationships. It does not, by itself, establish that users will find a task faster or understand results better than they would in 2D.

NASA’s 2022 account of a prototype visualization for the CAMP2Ex field campaign offers a concrete example. Its longer dashboard video depicted 76 data variables drawn from airborne, seaborne, and spaceborne sources. The instruments operated across different spatial and temporal scales and produced data in different formats. The visualization was intended to help scientists navigate material that might otherwise be tedious to examine file by file. NASA’s CAMP2Ex visualization account describes the project.

Those are production figures, not evidence that the interface improved usability, scientific outcomes, or performance for end users.

Where spatial interfaces are already used
Scientific field campaigns
CAMP2Ex illustrates a case where a spatial visualization can bring multiple instrument streams into one view. NASA atmospheric-sciences professor Larry Di Girolamo described navigating thousands of raw campaign files as “an extraordinarily tedious task,” saying that this could reduce the campaign’s scientific return. Stuart Levy, a senior programmer and system administrator at the University of Illinois’ Advanced Visualization Lab, said the visualization put information in one place to help locate patterns across datasets. These statements explain the project’s motivation; they are not results from a controlled comparison with a 2D dashboard.
Astronomy and mission work
NASA describes OpenSpace as open-source interactive visualization software for dynamic data, simulations, and space mission planning and operations. Gaia Sky describes itself as a real-time 3D astronomy visualization platform for desktop and VR; its site lists version 3.8.0, released July 23, 2026. These are examples of 3D software serving astronomy and mission-related work, not evidence that a general-purpose business dashboard should adopt the same approach.

Research discovery
The Knowledge Cosmos, described in a 2025 IEEE VIS Arts Program paper, spatializes 17 million academic papers according to semantic similarity. This is a knowledge map: spatial arrangement is used to explore relationships among publications. It demonstrates one way to organize a large body of research, not a usability finding about the dashboard in the title.

How to judge a 3D dashboard against its 2D predecessor
If a particular dashboard was replaced with a 3D version, the useful question is not whether 3D looks more immersive. It is whether the new view better supports the work its users actually need to do. A fair comparison should make the task, users, and evidence explicit.
- Task fit: Identify the decisions or exploration tasks the interface supports. Spatial browsing may help when location, scale, or connections are central; a flat view may be clearer for exact values, routine monitoring, or side-by-side comparisons.
- Navigation and orientation: Explain how people move through the scene, understand their position, and return to a useful starting point. A 3D environment needs legible controls and a reliable way to recover orientation.
- Context: Check whether related information stays visible while a user inspects a detail. If the scene obscures labels, comparisons, or summaries, spatial depth may add effort rather than context.
- Access: State what devices, browsers, graphics capabilities, and input methods are required. Consider whether users can complete essential tasks without relying on depth perception or precise 3D navigation.
- Evidence: Separate the creator’s impression from observed outcomes. If claiming an improvement, say what was measured, with whom, on which tasks, and under what conditions. Without that evidence, describe the design rationale rather than asserting a win.
What the title alone cannot establish
The phrase “I replaced my dashboard with a navigable 3D universe” signals a personal project, but it does not identify the original dashboard, its data, its audience, the 3D implementation, or the controls and accessibility choices. It also supplies no evaluation results. External examples can show that spatial interfaces have real uses; they cannot fill in those missing details or stand in for the author’s own lessons.

For a reader evaluating a similar change, the distinction matters: a 3D interface is a design choice whose value depends on the task and on how well people can use it. NASA’s multi-instrument campaign, a galaxy flight, and a map of academic papers each have a different purpose. Their existence supports the possibility of useful spatial visualization, not a general claim that replacing a 2D dashboard improves it.
