A cloud object is not necessarily gone for good when a delete request succeeds. The request may make its current name stop resolving while version history or a soft-delete policy still preserves recoverable data. Permanent deletion is a later service state; physical erasure from storage media is a separate matter that provider API documentation does not establish universally.
What does “deleted” mean in object storage?
It helps to distinguish four events: a service accepts a delete request; the current object name stops resolving; retained data remains recoverable; and the service reaches its permanent-deletion state. These events can occur at different times, depending on the provider and bucket configuration.

For Google Cloud Storage, a successful deletion is followed by a 404 for an immediate object download or metadata request, and object listings reflect the deletion. This is a service-level read-after-delete guarantee, not proof that every copy has been physically erased. Google Cloud Storage consistency documentation

Versioning keeps older versions
With Google Cloud Storage Object Versioning enabled, deleting a live object makes that version noncurrent rather than removing it immediately. Noncurrent versions remain accessible until explicitly deleted; soft delete may retain a deleted noncurrent version as well. Google Cloud Storage Object Versioning

Amazon S3 versioned buckets behave differently in implementation but share the key distinction: deleting the current object adds a delete marker. The marker changes what an ordinary lookup returns; it does not destroy the older versions. Permanently removing a particular version requires a separate delete operation and the relevant permission. Soft delete provides a recovery window
Google Cloud Storage describes soft-deleted objects as non-readable but restorable during the bucket’s soft-delete retention period. Its current documentation gives seven days as the default for supported buckets. That is a documented default, not a guarantee for every bucket: check the bucket’s actual policy. The Google Cloud Storage delete API identifies hardDeleteTime as the time a soft-deleted object becomes permanently deleted. The API does not provide a way to immediately delete an object that is already soft-deleted. Google Cloud Storage Objects: delete API

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When do lifecycle rules actually delete an object?
Lifecycle rules make an object eligible for an action; eligibility is not a precise execution deadline. Google Cloud Storage processes lifecycle actions asynchronously and advises against relying on a fixed delay between meeting a condition and the action being performed. A hold or an unfulfilled retention policy can prevent the delete action from taking place. Google Cloud Storage lifecycle management

Can a deleted object still appear online?
Yes, if a public response is being served from a cache. Google Cloud Storage’s immediate read-after-delete behavior applies to the service, while a cached public object may remain available until its cache lifetime expires. A lingering cached response therefore does not, by itself, show that the authoritative object is still live. Google Cloud Storage consistency documentation
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does permanent deletion mean physical erasure?
Not necessarily—and the cited cloud API documentation does not provide a universal timeline for overwriting or physically erasing underlying media. It describes object visibility, versions, retention, and service deletion states. Those are different questions from whether every physical or out-of-band copy has been erased.

A historical study of the YAFFS log-structured filesystem found that ordinary deletion in the system it examined did not provide a temporal guarantee of physical data removal. That is a narrow finding about the studied system, not evidence about all filesystems or current cloud providers. The study of deletion behavior in YAFFS

What to check before treating an object as gone
- Current-name behavior: Does a read or listing stop showing the live object after the delete request?
- Version history: Is versioning enabled, and does deletion leave a noncurrent version or a delete marker?
- Recovery policy: Is soft delete enabled, what is the configured retention period, and what event ends recovery?
- Lifecycle and retention controls: Is deletion asynchronous, and could a hold or retention policy block it?
- Caches: Could a public cached copy remain until its cache lifetime expires?
- Erasure scope: Does the documentation establish service-level deletion only, or does it make a specific claim about physical media? Do not infer the latter from a successful API response.
