If WhatsApp won’t open after an OS update, start with steps that don’t delete data: close and reopen the app, restart your phone, then check the Apple App Store or Google Play for a WhatsApp update. Before deleting or reinstalling WhatsApp, check when your chats were last backed up—messages newer than that backup may not be recoverable from it.
Try these safe fixes first
- Close WhatsApp and open it again. If the app is stuck or closes immediately, close it using your phone’s usual app-switching controls, then launch it again.
- Restart your phone. After the restart, open WhatsApp and check whether it stays open.
- Check for a WhatsApp update. Use the official WhatsApp download page to reach the Apple App Store for iPhone or Google Play for Android. Install an available update, then try opening the app again.
- On iPhone, check for an iOS update if no WhatsApp update is available. Apple includes checking for device software updates among its general steps for an app that isn’t working as expected. These checks are sensible troubleshooting steps, but they do not prove that the OS update caused WhatsApp to fail. See Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance.
Check compatibility and available storage
Make sure your phone has available storage, then check whether the current WhatsApp listing supports your operating system. WhatsApp’s Android download page currently lists Android OS 6.0 or above. The sources available here do not establish a corresponding iOS minimum, so check the current App Store listing for your device rather than assuming one.

Storage and connection conditions can also matter when backing up chats. WhatsApp’s iPhone backup guidance identifies insufficient device storage, an unstable connection, and interruptions as possible contributors to incomplete backups.

Do not make deletion or reinstallation an early step if your chat history matters. Apple warns that deleting an app may remove data stored in it. If you can still open WhatsApp, check its chat backup status and note the date of the most recent backup before proceeding.

WhatsApp says messages sent or received after the latest backup cannot be restored from that backup. If you cannot verify a recent backup, the available sources do not establish that reinstalling is safe for your chat history.
Reinstall only if the earlier steps fail
If WhatsApp still will not open and you have checked your backup situation, reinstalling may be a next step—but it carries data risk. Get the app through the official Apple App Store or Google Play route, then follow WhatsApp’s registration and restore prompts. A restore can only return data available in the backup you selected; it cannot bring back messages newer than that backup.

Contact WhatsApp if it keeps crashing
If the app still crashes after these checks, contact WhatsApp support rather than trying to downgrade your phone’s operating system. When WhatsApp opens, the in-app route is Settings > Help > Contact Us. Include your phone model, OS version, WhatsApp version, what happens when you launch the app, and the steps you have already tried.
The sources cited here do not confirm a widespread WhatsApp defect caused by a particular OS release. A crash after an update does not, by itself, establish that the update is the cause, and no single fix is guaranteed.
