How to Choose a Home Battery for Backup Power and Time-of-Use Rates

Choose a home battery by sizing it to the loads you want to keep running, the length of backup you want, and the power those loads need at the same time. Then check whether the system fits your solar equipment, electrical panel, utility rules, and time-of-use (TOU) rate. Battery capacity alone cannot tell you whether a system will run your home or reduce your bill.

How much battery storage do I need for my home?

Start with your own electricity use, not a national average or a product’s headline capacity. Your recent bills can show typical daily use and seasonal changes, but heating, air conditioning, well pumps, EV charging, and electric cooking can make your needs very different from your annual average.

  1. Review recent utility bills and note daily or monthly kWh use, including seasonal peaks.
  2. List the appliances and circuits you need during an outage, and estimate how much energy they use over your target backup window.
  3. Decide whether solar is expected to recharge the battery during an outage. Allow for nighttime, cloudy weather, and lower seasonal production rather than assuming full-sun output.
  4. Ask an installer to check that the battery can supply the loads running together, including startup demand from motors.

For context, Tesla’s 2025 sizing article cites U.S. Energy Information Administration figures of 10,500 kWh median household electricity use in 2023 and 5.5 hours average U.S. electricity interruption in 2022. Neither figure determines an individual home’s storage requirement; outage length varies by location and event, and household loads vary substantially. Tesla’s sizing guide

Capacity and power answer different questions

Capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), is the amount of energy stored and helps estimate how long a battery can supply a load. Power, measured in kilowatts (kW), is how much load it can serve at once. A system may have enough stored energy for several hours but still be unable to run multiple large appliances simultaneously.

As a current named example, Tesla lists Powerwall 3 at 13.5 kWh capacity and 11.5 kW continuous backup power. Tesla lists Powerwall 3 Expansion as adding 13.5 kWh of capacity. What can a home battery run during a power outage?

That depends on the battery’s power output, the energy available, the backup configuration, and what is operating at the same time. A critical-load setup may keep selected lights, refrigeration, communications, or a few chosen circuits on while leaving high-demand appliances out. Whole-home backup aims to serve more of the home, but it must be designed for the home’s full demand rather than assumed from the battery’s capacity.

Large appliances and motors can create high running or startup demand. Ask the installer which specific circuits and appliances will be backed up, whether simultaneous use is supported, and how the system handles motor starts. The electrical panel layout, backup switch or gateway, utility, and site conditions all affect the design. Tesla’s backup-load guidance

EF ECOFLOW 12kWh Power Station: DELTA Pro Ultra with Extra Battery
  • One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
  • Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
  • Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
  • Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
  • Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.

Choose partial or whole-home backup deliberately

Partial-home backup

Selected circuits are backed up, with heavier or less essential loads excluded. This can focus available energy on the things that matter most during an outage. Get the backed-up circuits identified in writing so the system’s limits are clear.

Whole-home backup

A whole-home design needs to support the home’s demand, not merely connect to its panel. Confirm the configuration, backup equipment, and any load-management measures with a qualified installer. A product’s advertised capacity does not establish that it can run every appliance in your home at once.

Can a home battery save money on time-of-use rates?

It can shift electricity use: charge when rates are lower and discharge when rates are higher. Whether that saves money depends on your utility’s current peak and off-peak prices and hours, your household’s consumption timing, and whether your utility supports the relevant charging, export, and control features. There is no universal savings figure that applies to every home.

Set a backup reserve that matches your priorities

A reserve keeps part of the battery’s energy available for an outage. A higher reserve leaves less capacity for routine rate shifting; a lower reserve makes more energy available for everyday use but leaves less held back for backup. Choose the tradeoff based on your outage priorities and the way your utility’s rates work. Tesla Backup Reserve guidance

Check solar compatibility and outage charging

Solar can recharge a battery during an outage only when the system is designed to operate in that mode and sunlight is available. Night, weather, and season affect how much useful energy solar can provide. Before selecting a battery, have an installer confirm compatibility with your existing panels and inverter, how the system behaves when the grid is down, and whether the proposed design can be expanded later. Compare proposals on the same terms

Product names and capacity figures are not enough to compare systems. Ask each installer to specify the same practical details so differences in scope and capability are visible:

  • Usable energy capacity in kWh and continuous and peak power in kW.
  • Motor-start capability and which loads can run together.
  • Partial- or whole-home backup configuration and the circuits included.
  • Compatibility with existing solar panels and inverters, plus the expansion path.
  • Backup transition and controls, reserve settings, and supported TOU optimization.
  • Warranty, installation scope, and current installed price in an itemized quote.
  • Local utility interconnection, permit requirements, and eligibility for grid charging or export, where relevant.

Prices, incentives, payback, export compensation, and permission to grid-charge depend on location, utility terms, and the proposed installation. Confirm current local requirements directly with your utility and compare written, itemized installer proposals. Final system design should be reviewed by a qualified installer.
