Menu names and rollout details can differ between Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web and individual accounts, but the privacy area is the starting point.
These controls reduce exposure; they do not make an account completely private. Your phone number remains visible in WhatsApp, people can copy content they receive, and WhatsApp still processes account and technical information.

How to open WhatsApp’s privacy controls
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings. On some Android versions, tap the three-dot menu first; on iPhone, Settings is a tab in the app.
- Tap Privacy.
- Select the category you want to change, such as Last seen and online, Profile photo, About, Status or Groups.
- Choose the audience or behavior shown for that category, then return to the previous screen. WhatsApp saves most choices immediately.
WhatsApp also presents Privacy Checkup from the privacy area. It walks through several important controls in sequence, which is useful if you have never reviewed them or have changed phones. The official Help Center supports Android, iOS, Web and other platforms, but an individual account can receive a label or layout at a different time.
What the main visibility choices mean
Many profile and presence controls use four choices: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… and Nobody. The meaning is consistent: Everyone includes people who are not saved in your address book; My contacts limits visibility to saved contacts; My contacts except… lets you remove selected contacts; and Nobody hides the item from other WhatsApp users.

WhatsApp’s current help information describes defaults in which any user can see your profile photo, read receipts and online status. Contacts can see your Status, About text, profile links and last seen, while unknown callers can call you. Treat those as defaults to verify rather than guarantees: an account, country or app release may show a different starting configuration.
The reciprocal effect of presence controls
Privacy is reciprocal for last seen and online. If you prevent another person from seeing your last seen or online information, WhatsApp also prevents you from seeing those details for other users. This is not a defect or a delayed update; it is part of the control’s design.
The same trade-off applies to read receipts. When you disable read receipts, you will not see read receipts from other people in one-to-one chats. WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent in group chats, so turning off the setting does not remove group-chat read indicators.

Choosing a practical level of visibility
- Everyone: convenient for a public-facing number, but it exposes the information to people you have not saved.
- My contacts: a straightforward default for personal accounts, provided your address book is maintained.
- My contacts except…: useful when most contacts are trusted but particular people should not see a profile item or presence detail.
- Nobody: the most restrictive option for controls that offer it, with the reciprocal loss of visibility where WhatsApp applies one.
Status privacy is a separate audience system
Open Settings > Privacy > Status to choose who can see future Status updates. The choices are My contacts, My contacts except… and Only share with…. “Only share with…” is the narrowest option because you select the people who may view the update.
A change does not travel backward. If a Status was already posted, changing the audience does not alter that existing post. Apply the new choice before publishing the next update, and delete an older update separately if it should no longer be available.
Mentions and group posts create exceptions
A person or group mentioned in a Status can see that Status even when they are outside the audience you selected. If you mention a group, all members of that group can see it. A Status posted to a group is visible to that group’s members regardless of your Status privacy setting.

WhatsApp also says a person or group mentioned in a Status can reshare it to their own audience. The reshared version does not reveal the original poster’s name, profile information or phone number according to WhatsApp’s help page, but the content itself can still spread beyond your intended list. Do not treat a private Status audience as protection against screenshots, screen recordings or other copying.

Limit group invitations and unwanted contact
Control who may add you to groups
In Settings > Privacy > Groups, choose Everyone, My contacts or My contacts except…. With My contacts except…, you can prevent selected contacts from adding you directly while allowing other saved contacts to do so. Depending on the situation, WhatsApp may show an invitation instead of adding you immediately; review the invitation before joining.
If you are already in a group you do not want, use the group’s information screen to exit. WhatsApp also provides reporting tools for groups that violate its rules or are being used for unwanted activity. Restricting future invitations does not remove you from groups you already joined.

Block, report and silence are different controls
- Block: stops messages, calls and Status updates from a specific account.
- Report: sends information about an account or group to WhatsApp for review; reporting is not the same as blocking unless you select both actions.
- Silence unknown callers: prevents calls from unknown numbers from ringing your phone while keeping them visible in the Calls tab. It is separate from blocking and does not stop every possible interaction through shared groups or other channels.
None of these controls hides your telephone number. WhatsApp states: “There is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp.” In groups, members can see one another’s numbers when they are added, so group privacy settings cannot turn a WhatsApp account into an anonymous identity.

WhatsApp’s Privacy at a Glance explains: “However, when you use WhatsApp to send personal messages, make calls, post status updates, or share your location (when you turn on location sharing in chats) this will be end-to-end encrypted.” In practical terms, WhatsApp describes the message, call, Status or chat location as readable, hearable or viewable only by you and the intended chat participants while it is protected by that system.

Encryption does not control the recipient’s device. WhatsApp’s How to stay safe on WhatsApp guidance says: “When you share a chat, photo, video, file or voice message with someone else on WhatsApp, they’ll have a copy of these messages.” A recipient can screenshot, record a call or screen, photograph another device, forward a file or reshare a Status. Select the audience carefully and avoid sending anything that would cause harm if copied.
Encryption is not a promise that no information is collected
WhatsApp’s privacy overview says it receives information that users provide, technical information and information received from other users. It also describes circumstances in which information may be shared, including group membership and cloud backups to an iCloud or Google Account. End-to-end encryption protects the content categories WhatsApp identifies; it does not mean that the service has no account, device, connection or usage information.
Additional settings worth reviewing
The Privacy screen includes controls beyond profile visibility. Review these according to how you use WhatsApp:
- Default disappearing-message timer: sets a default duration for new chats that support disappearing messages. It does not erase copies a recipient has already made.
- Silence unknown callers: keeps calls from unfamiliar numbers from ringing, as described above.
- Live location: check which chats currently receive live-location updates and stop sharing from the relevant chat or location panel.
- Protect IP address in calls: an advanced call setting intended to reduce exposure of network information during calls. It can affect call routing or quality, so consider the trade-off before enabling it.
- Disable link previews: prevents automatic previews when links are sent, reducing the information exchanged to generate a preview.
- Block high volumes of unknown messages: helps reduce flooding from unfamiliar accounts, but it is not a guarantee that every unwanted message will be stopped.
These settings reduce particular forms of exposure; none makes the account unreachable or removes the need to judge who receives a message.

Protect the account itself with two-step verification
Account security sits next to privacy controls. WhatsApp’s surfaced two-step-verification guidance says the service is replacing its traditional six-digit PIN with a password and provides controls for changing the credential, updating the account email address and reviewing trusted devices.
This is rollout-sensitive. Your app may still show a six-digit PIN, or it may use the newer password wording. Follow the current prompts in your own WhatsApp account and the official Help Center rather than assuming another phone has the same labels. Use an email address you can access, keep the credential private and remove devices you no longer trust.

What these settings cannot guarantee
- They cannot hide your phone number from WhatsApp users in shared groups.
- They cannot retract a message, Status or file that another person has copied, recorded or forwarded.
- They cannot make Status audience changes apply to a post that was already shared.
- They cannot override the visibility created by a mention or a Status posted to a group.
- They cannot make end-to-end encryption cover every account or technical detail processed by the service.
- They cannot ensure identical menu names on every platform or account at the same time.
For a thorough review, start at Settings > Privacy, run Privacy Checkup, then inspect Status, Groups, blocked contacts, unknown-call handling, location sharing and account-protection settings individually. That sequence separates who can see information, who can contact you and what happens after you share something.
