WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a prompt that can stop some users from logging in until they update their phone’s operating system. WhatsApp has not announced which exact iOS or Android versions trigger the restriction, or which users are included. Its published app requirements—Android 6.0 or newer and iOS 15.1 or newer, as listed on October 7, 2026—are useful reference points, but they are not confirmed thresholds for this reported login block.
What is happening with WhatsApp logins?
On October 5, 2026, WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp was rolling out a server-side alert to some people using outdated iOS or Android software. The prompt reportedly requires a device software update before login can continue, and the report says it does not depend on installing a particular WhatsApp app version. This is third-party reporting, not an official WhatsApp announcement. WABetaInfo’s report says the affected OS versions have not been specified.

GSMArena reported the development on October 6, citing WABetaInfo. That is corroborating coverage of the same report, not independent confirmation of how WhatsApp is implementing the restriction.
What iOS and Android versions does WhatsApp currently require?
WhatsApp’s download page lists Android OS 6.0 or above and iOS 15.1 or newer as the minimum requirements for its mobile apps. These are the published app requirements shown on the page as checked on October 7, 2026. They are not a published specification of the new server-side login restriction, so being below either minimum does not establish that a particular phone has already been blocked by this rollout.

Why is WhatsApp asking you to update your phone before logging in?
If the reported prompt appears, it is asking for an update to the phone’s operating system, not simply an update to WhatsApp. WhatsApp’s general explanation for retiring older systems is to support newer technology and security. The specific reason for this newly reported login prompt has not been explained in an official WhatsApp announcement; the rollout details come from third-party reporting.

What to do if you cannot log in
- Check for an official system update. Open your phone’s Settings and look for the software or system update option. The exact menu names vary by manufacturer and OS version.
- Install an available update. Follow the phone’s instructions and restart if prompted. Then reopen WhatsApp and try logging in again.
- Compare your OS with WhatsApp’s published minimums. The current download-page requirements are Android 6.0 or above or iOS 15.1 or newer. Meeting those minimums does not guarantee that a phone is unaffected by the reported rollout.
- If no compatible update is offered, check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact phone model. If considering a replacement, verify that the specific model receives updates, meets WhatsApp’s current requirements, and works with your carrier and region before buying.
Do not rely on unofficial WhatsApp builds, modified operating systems, or unsupported downloads as a workaround. The official material cited here does not provide such a workaround.
Are older phones already blocked?
That cannot be determined from the published minimum requirements alone. WhatsApp has not announced the precise OS versions or account groups affected by the reported rollout, and the report describes it as reaching some users rather than confirming a complete rollout.

Older support cutoffs should not be mistaken for today’s requirements or for the trigger behind this prompt. WhatsApp’s older support notice said Android 2.3.7 and older and iPhone iOS 7 and older lost support after February 1, 2020; it also warned that features on platforms no longer actively developed could stop working at any time. That notice is historical context, not a current compatibility list. WhatsApp’s legacy support notice was last updated June 14, 2019.
