The same file can work in one chat or on one device and fail on another, which is why a systematic fix matters.
This guide covers the working fixes in 2024 across Android, iPhone/iPad, and WhatsApp Web/Desktop. You’ll also learn how to convert files to formats WhatsApp actually accepts, plus what to check when conversion still doesn’t help.

What the WhatsApp File Format Is Not Supported Error Means
This error typically appears when you try to attach or share a file (document, audio, video, or sometimes an image) and WhatsApp can’t decode or classify it reliably. Common triggers include unusual codecs (especially in video), unsupported document formats, and media files with missing metadata.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In practice, WhatsApp is strict about:
- Container format (example: MP4 works better than MKV for many users)
- Codec (example: H.264 video + AAC audio is the safest baseline)
- File packaging (some archives/utility formats can’t be recognized)
- Corruption or incomplete downloads (especially when re-sharing the same file)
Quick Checks That Solve Most Cases
Before you convert anything, do these checks. They’re fast and often fix the issue immediately.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Insert your card to add massive storage up to 1.5TB[1] to your Android smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, and laptops.
- SPACE FOR MORE. With expansive capacities up to 1.5TB[1], capture and store hours of Full HD video[4], movies, music, games, photos, and podcasts.
- MOVE FILES FAST. Use your card with the SANDISK QuickFlow microSD UHS-I Card USB-A Reader[6] to achieve up to 195MB/s[2] read speeds [128GB-1.5TB models] and offload your content fast.
- LOAD APPS IN A SNAP. Rated A1[3], the SANDISK Ultra microSD card is optimized for faster app launch and overall app performance.
- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
- Rename the file (remove weird characters like emojis). Try something simple like
video.mp4. - Confirm the extension matches the content. If it says
.mp4but isn’t actually MP4, WhatsApp will reject it. - Try the same file from your gallery/file manager instead of selecting it from inside another app’s share sheet.
- Re-download the file if you got it from email, Telegram, cloud storage, or a browser and then forwarded it.
- Update WhatsApp (Android/iOS). Many format-handling improvements ship through updates.
Verify WhatsApp Can Handle the File Type (and the Limits)
WhatsApp supports a wide range of media, but not every codec or document type. Also, size limits and “high-risk” formats can cause attachments to fail.
Use the table below as a practical compatibility reference for the most common failure points.
| File type you’re sending | Preferred WhatsApp-friendly format | Common reason for failure |
|---|---|---|
| Video | MP4 (H.264 video + AAC audio) | MKV/WEBM codecs, H.265-only, variable frame rate edge cases |
| Audio | M4A (AAC) or MP3 | OPUS in container, unsupported sampling/bitrate packaging |
| Documents | DOCX/DOC/RAR/7Z/ZIP depending on handling; some app-generated formats | |
| Images | JPG or PNG | HEIC/WEBP with limited support on some versions/devices |
| Archives | Unzip first, then send individual files | ZIP/RAR can’t be previewed/recognized as media |
Note: WhatsApp changes supported formats over time. If you’re troubleshooting in 2024, converting to the preferred formats above is still the most reliable approach.

Working Fixes by Platform (2024)
The root cause is usually the same (WhatsApp can’t parse your file), but the steps differ by device. Use the platform that matches how you’re sending the file.
Android (WhatsApp app)
These steps address the most common Android-side causes: media scanning, permissions, and outdated WhatsApp builds.
- Open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data.
- Tap Manage storage (optional) to ensure WhatsApp isn’t choking on a bad cache state.
- Go to Settings (phone) → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions.
- Enable Files and media (or Storage) so WhatsApp can read the file.
- Restart your phone, then try attaching again.
- Update WhatsApp from Google Play, then retry.
- If it still fails: clear app cache (not data). Android path: Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear cache.
iPhone and iPad (WhatsApp app)
On iOS, the fix often comes down to permissions and file handling. If WhatsApp can’t access the file properly, you’ll see “not supported” behavior.

- Open Settings (iPhone) → WhatsApp.
- Make sure Photos and Files access are enabled (as shown in your iOS version).
- Open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and Data (or similarly named) and check usage.
- Update WhatsApp from the App Store.
- If the file is in a shared location (email, browser downloads, cloud), download it again to Files, then attach from the Files picker.
WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop
Web/Desktop uses your computer’s file handling. If the file is borderline, the web client may reject it even when mobile tries a different pipeline.
- Use WhatsApp Desktop if you’re currently using WhatsApp Web, or vice versa (test both).
- Try attaching through the paperclip or Upload button and pick the file from your local folder.
- Make sure the file isn’t still downloading. Wait until the browser indicates the download is complete.
- Restart your browser/device session (sign out and sign back in, if needed).
- Update the desktop app or browser (Chrome/Edge) and try again.
Convert the File to a Supported Format (Fastest Reliable Fix)
If you keep hitting “File format is not supported,” conversion is the most dependable solution. Use a tool that outputs the preferred baseline formats (MP4 with H.264/AAC, M4A/MP3, PDF, JPG/PNG).
Rule of thumb: re-encode to a “boring” format—less fancy codecs, standard containers, and commonly supported settings.
Video conversion to MP4 (H.264/AAC)
If your file is MKV, WEBM, MOV, or HEVC-heavy, convert to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. That combo is accepted by WhatsApp more consistently than alternatives.
You can use desktop tools (HandBrake) or an encoder workflow (FFmpeg). If you’re using FFmpeg, a common baseline is:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v libx264 -preset medium -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -movflags +faststart output.mp4

- Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, and Windows laptops.
- Up to 140MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute
- Load apps faster with A1-rated performance
- View, access, and back up your phone’s files in one location with the SanDisk Memory Zone app
- Relax knowing your card is backed by a 10-year limited warranty by SanDisk
After converting, attach output.mp4 from your gallery/files. If the source video is unusually corrupted, try re-importing it first (download again or re-copy from the original media source).
Audio conversion to M4A (AAC) or MP3
For audio that fails (especially files using OPUS or odd containers), convert to M4A (AAC) or MP3.
Common FFmpeg-style baseline:
ffmpeg -i input.opus -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.m4a
If you prefer MP3:
ffmpeg -i input.ext -codec:a libmp3lame -b:a 128k output.mp3
Document conversion to PDF
When documents fail, converting to PDF usually resolves it. This includes Word docs, spreadsheets, or any app-generated formats that WhatsApp can’t reliably preview.
- On Windows: open the file → Print → select Microsoft Print to PDF → save.
- On macOS: open the file → File → Print → bottom-left dropdown → Save as PDF.
- On iPhone/iPad: open in the source app → Share → Print → pinch-out preview to “open PDF” → share/save to Files.
Image conversion to JPG or PNG
If WhatsApp rejects images (especially HEIC or WEBP), convert to JPG or PNG and resend. JPG is usually the best “size vs compatibility” option; PNG is safest for transparency.
On iPhone, an easy method is: open the image → Share → save to Files as a converted copy (if your workflow supports it) or export via a converter app, then resend as JPG/PNG.

Common Edge Cases (That Look Like Format Issues)
Sometimes the format is technically fine, but WhatsApp still can’t process it. These are the edge cases that waste the most time.
- Corrupted downloads: re-download and resend. If the file is from WhatsApp previously, try exporting/sending a fresh copy from the original source.
- Very high resolution or unusual frame rate: re-encode video with the same codec but lower complexity (or use a different preset).
- Unsupported subtitle tracks or embedded metadata: stripping tracks can help (re-mux/re-encode).
- HEIC/HEVC on iPhone backups: convert images/videos to JPG/MP4 on a computer if you can.
- Wrong extension: file named
.mp4but actually a different container. Converting from the real decoded content fixes it. - Permissions/scoped storage issues on Android: WhatsApp may access only some folders. Grant Files & Media access and try again.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting When None of the Fixes Work
If conversion didn’t fix it, treat this like a reproducible diagnostic. You want to isolate whether the problem is the file, WhatsApp, or the sending method.
- Test with a known-good file of the same type from your device (example: a sample MP4 you recorded on the phone). If that sends, your WhatsApp setup is fine.
- Send the problematic file to yourself in a private chat. Sometimes group bots/forwarding changes how it’s processed.
- Try a different sending method:
- From Gallery/Photos picker
- From Document picker (paperclip → Document)
- From Files app (iPhone/iPad) or file manager (Android)
- Convert again, but simpler: if your MP4 conversion used a complex setting, redo it with defaults (H.264 + AAC, CRF ~23, AAC 128k).
- Check storage space: low space can interrupt media handling. Free a few GB and retry.
- Update WhatsApp and restart the device.
- Reinstall WhatsApp only if all else fails (this is the nuclear option). Back up chats first if your setup supports it.
Gotcha: Some “format converters” claim compatibility but produce MP4 files with odd encoding. If WhatsApp still refuses, try a different converter tool or re-encode with a standard profile.

When you hit this error, you have two main strategies: modify the file so WhatsApp can read it, or modify how you attach it. Here’s how to choose quickly.
| What you’re seeing | Best move | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Any file fails, even your own videos/photos | Change permissions + update WhatsApp | Indicates an app access or version issue, not the file |
| Only one specific file fails | Convert that file to MP4 (H.264/AAC), PDF, or JPG/PNG | WhatsApp can’t decode the original encoding/container |
| Works on Android but not on iPhone (or vice versa) | Convert once using a standard baseline, then resend | Clients use different pipelines; baseline encoding reduces differences |
| Fails on WhatsApp Web, works on mobile | Try WhatsApp Desktop or convert to the baseline formats | Web client may be pickier about local file decoding |
FAQs
Why does WhatsApp say file format not supported even when the extension looks correct?
Extensions can be misleading. The container and codec inside the file must match what WhatsApp can decode. If the file was renamed or partially downloaded, WhatsApp may reject it even if it ends in the right suffix.

Will converting to MP4/H.264/AAC always fix video errors?
It fixes the vast majority of cases in 2024. If it still fails, the file might be corrupted or extremely nonstandard. In that case, try a different conversion tool or lower video complexity (resolution/frame rate) and remove problematic metadata.

What’s the fastest way to resend a document that WhatsApp won’t accept?
Export it as a PDF and attach the PDF. If you’re on iPhone/iPad, use the Print-to-PDF workflow; on Windows/macOS, use Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF.
Does WhatsApp Web support the same file formats as the mobile app?
Not always. WhatsApp Web/Desktop relies on your computer’s decoding path and browser/client behavior. If mobile works but Web fails, convert to the baseline formats or try WhatsApp Desktop instead.
Can I send ZIP/RAR files to WhatsApp?
You can try sending archives as files, but WhatsApp may not recognize them for preview and some clients treat them inconsistently. If you need reliable delivery, unzip first and send individual documents/images, or convert to PDF/JPG/PNG.

Bottom Line
The “WhatsApp: File format is not supported” error is usually a codec/container compatibility problem, not a random glitch. Start with quick checks (rename, update, permissions), and if the issue is tied to a specific file, convert it to WhatsApp-friendly baselines: MP4 (H.264/AAC), M4A/MP3, PDF, and JPG/PNG.
Once you get a known-good converted copy working, keep that workflow for future uploads—your time will drop dramatically because you’ll stop guessing.
