If your PS5 won’t boot into Safe Mode, it’s usually not “one thing.” Most cases come down to an incorrect power state, a controller/USB input issue, a display/HDMI handshake problem, or a corrupted system state that needs a specific Safe Mode recovery step.
This guide walks you through the methods that consistently work in 2024: proper Safe Mode entry, controller setup, display changes, and the correct sequence of Safe Mode recovery options—then manual USB reinstall as a fallback.

Safe Mode is a recovery environment PS5 uses when the console can’t start normally or you need to repair system software. If your console won’t reach the Safe Mode screen, you may be dealing with:
#1 Best Overall
- Simultaneously charge and play your DualSense Controller
- 10 foot braided cable with durable metal housing
- USB to USB-C charging cable
- Officially Licensed by Sony
- Rest Mode interference (you’re not fully powering down)
- Wrong button timing (Safe Mode entry sequence not completed)
- Controller not recognized (wrong USB cable or pairing issue)
- HDMI/display handshake failure (you think it’s not booting, but the TV can’t show Safe Mode)
- System software corruption (Safe Mode is reached, but options hang or fail)
- Power/hardware instability (faulty outlet, overheating, or storage/expansion problems)
Before You Start: Requirements and Quick Checks
Do these first so you don’t waste time troubleshooting the wrong layer.
- Grab a USB cable with data support (many cheap chargers only provide power).
- Use a DualSense controller you can reliably connect via USB.
- Have one working HDMI input ready (use HDMI port 1 on your TV/monitor if possible).
- Disconnect unnecessary accessories (USB drives, hubs, extra controllers, headsets with USB dongles).
Method 1: Force a True Power-Down (Avoid Rest Mode)
If your PS5 is stuck in a half-sleep state, Safe Mode entry won’t behave consistently. Start from a clean off state.
- Press and hold the PS button on the DualSense.
- Select Power > Turn Off PS5.
- Wait for the console light to go fully off.
- Unplug the power cable from the back of the PS5.
- Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
After the 60 seconds, proceed to the Safe Mode button sequence in Method 2.

Method 2: Correct Safe Mode Button Sequence (Power Button Beeps)
This is the most common point of failure—timing matters. The PS5 needs a second beep to confirm Safe Mode entry.
- With the PS5 fully off, press and hold the power button on the console.
- Keep holding until you hear one beep (about 1 second), then keep holding.
- Keep holding until you hear a second beep (usually around 7 seconds total).
- Release the button after the second beep.
- Connect the DualSense controller with a USB data cable and press the PS button when prompted.
If you only get one beep or the console boots normally, repeat after a full power unplug (Method 1).
Method 3: Use the Right Controller Setup (USB Data Cable + Pairing)
Safe Mode can fail to load even when the console is entering it—if the controller can’t connect, you’ll never get past the menu.
- Use the controller cable that came with the PS5 if you have it.
- Plug the USB cable into a rear USB port on the PS5 (closer to the power/HDMI area) if available.
- When Safe Mode starts, press the PS button on the controller.
- If it doesn’t respond, try a different USB port and a different known data-capable cable.
Gotcha: some USB cables charge phones but don’t carry data. The controller may never connect in Safe Mode even though the console is fine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMethod 4: Change the Display Path (HDMI + TV Input Issues)
On some TVs/monitors, Safe Mode output resolution/handshake can prevent you from seeing anything—leading you to think the PS5 can’t enter Safe Mode.
- Try a different HDMI input on your TV (for example, HDMI 1 instead of HDMI 3).
- Directly connect PS5 to the TV (remove capture cards, HDMI switches, and docks).
- If you have another TV/monitor, test there.
- If you reach Safe Mode but can’t navigate, you may need Change Resolution (Method 5).
If you see no signal after multiple attempts, do not assume Safe Mode failed—test with a different display.
Method 5: Fix with Safe Mode Options (Use the Correct Order)
Once you can reach the Safe Mode menu, choose options strategically. Start with the least destructive tools.
Update System Software
If Safe Mode loads but the system won’t boot normally, an update can repair corrupted components.

- Select Update System Software.
- Choose Update via Internet if available.
- Wait for completion and reboot.
Change Resolution
Use this if you suspect a display/handshake problem.
- Select Change Resolution.
- Try a lower option and confirm the picture appears.
Restore Default Settings
This resets system settings to factory defaults without wiping storage.
- Select Restore Default Settings.
- Confirm and let the console restart.
Rebuild Database
Rebuilding doesn’t delete games, but it can fix indexing issues that break normal boot.
- Select Rebuild Database.
- Wait for the process to finish (it can take time depending on drive size).
- Restart and test normal boot.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)
This is more serious than Default Settings. It typically reinstalls system software and can be necessary when corruption persists.
- Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Follow prompts to confirm.
- If the menu offers network update vs USB, prefer network first if you can.
Initialize PS5
This is the most destructive option in Safe Mode. It erases the system and typically requires reinstalling everything.
- Select Initialize PS5.
- Confirm the erase.
- After restart, set up the console and reinstall your games.
Method 6: Manual Update/Reinstall via USB (When Safe Mode Won’t Finish)
If Safe Mode loads but options fail, or you can’t complete an update, manual reinstall is the most reliable fallback.
Prepare the USB drive
- Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 (most drives work reliably on FAT32).
- Create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create another folder namedUPDATE. - Download the correct PS5 system software file from Sony’s support site to your PC.
- Place the downloaded file into
PS5/UPDATE.
Keep the filename format exactly as Sony provides it. Wrong folder structure or a renamed file can prevent the update from being detected.
Install the update in recovery
- With the PS5 off, start Safe Mode (Method 2).
- Select Update System Software.
- When prompted, choose the USB option (wording may vary).
- Let the process complete fully, then reboot.
If your issue is severe enough that Update keeps failing, use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) and ensure the USB content matches Sony’s requirements.

Method 7: Fix Safe Mode “Loops” and Frozen Menus
Sometimes Safe Mode appears, then the console reboots, or the menu freezes. Try these stabilization steps.
- Try Change Resolution first to rule out display/handshake issues.
- Use Rebuild Database if menus are accessible but normal boot fails.
- Avoid external USB devices while attempting recovery.
- Use a direct HDMI connection (no adapters) during troubleshooting.
If the console reboots during Safe Mode, repeat Method 1 (60-second unplug) and try again with the simplest option available first.
Method 8: Hardware and Power Troubleshooting (Last-mile causes)
If the console won’t even reach the Safe Mode menu, look beyond software.

- Try a different HDMI cable and a different HDMI port on the TV.
Remove accessories and external storage
- Disconnect any USB storage and USB hubs.
- Unplug extra controllers (leave only one connected via USB).
Inspect the SSD expansion (if applicable)
If you recently installed or swapped the M.2 SSD, it can contribute to boot failures.
- Power off the PS5 completely and unplug it.
- Remove the M.2 SSD expansion (if you installed it recently).
- Attempt Safe Mode again.
If Safe Mode works after removing the SSD, reinstall the SSD carefully and confirm compatibility.

- Starting the sequence while the console is in Rest Mode rather than fully off.
- Releasing the power button after only the first beep.
- Using a USB cable that charges but doesn’t support data.
- Skipping the controller USB connection step when Safe Mode prompts for it.
- Trying to troubleshoot through an HDMI switch, soundbar pass-through, or capture device.
- Picking the most destructive reset before trying Update/Rebuild.
Troubleshooting Guide (If Your PS5 Still Won’t Enter Safe Mode)
Use this decision path based on what you observe.
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| Console boots normally every time | Safe Mode hold timing not long enough | Repeat Method 1, then hold until the second beep (Method 2) |
| No video signal, but console seems on | HDMI handshake/resolution mismatch | Try another HDMI port/cable (Method 4), then pick Change Resolution (Method 5) |
| Safe Mode screen shows but controller won’t work | Wrong USB cable or controller connection | Use a USB data cable, plug into a rear port, press PS (Method 3) |
| Update/Reinstall hangs or fails | Corrupt system files or failed download | Manual USB update/reinstall (Method 6) |
| Console restarts repeatedly during recovery | Power instability or problematic storage | 60-second unplug (Method 1), remove external devices, test without SSD expansion if recently installed |
| Safe Mode never appears at all | Hardware/power fault or severe corruption | Power/outlet + cable checks (Method 8). If still failing, consider service support |
Alternatives If You Can’t Access Safe Mode
If Safe Mode entry is consistently impossible, you can still reduce risk and prepare for the most effective repair path.
- Try a different display and HDMI path (often fastest when the console is actually booting).
- Keep only essentials connected (one controller, no external USB drives).
- Document LED lights/beep behavior so you can describe the pattern if you contact Sony support.
FAQs
Why does my PS5 keep turning on but not showing Safe Mode?
Most often the PS5 isn’t fully powered down, or you’re releasing the power button too early. Do a 60-second unplug (Method 1) and hold until the second beep (Method 2).
What should I do if Safe Mode loads but the controller won’t respond?
Swap to a USB cable known to support data, plug into a rear USB port, and press the PS button when prompted. If possible, try a different DualSense controller.
Does Rebuild Database delete my games?
No. Rebuild Database typically rebuilds the drive’s index and can fix boot/index corruption without erasing game files.
Will Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) erase everything?
It’s more destructive than restore default settings and is intended to recover a broken system. Exact data impact depends on the recovery flow shown on your screen, so confirm the prompts you see during the reset.
Should I initialize PS5 if Safe Mode options fail?
If every recovery path fails and the system can’t boot, Initialize PS5 is the final software-based option. It’s destructive, so only use it after trying Update/Rebuild/USB reinstall.
Bottom Line
If your PS5 won’t boot into Safe Mode, start with a true power-down, then use the exact “two beeps” entry sequence. From there, fix the most common blockers—controller USB connection and HDMI/display handshake—before moving to Safe Mode recovery tools.
