Use Chat Lock to keep a selected conversation out of your WhatsApp inbox and behind your phone’s authentication. Use disappearing messages to limit how long new messages remain visible in a chat. They address different privacy risks, so you can use both—but neither guarantees that another person cannot keep a copy of a message.
What is the difference between Chat Lock and disappearing messages?

What does Chat Lock do?
Chat Lock is about access to a conversation on your device. Meta describes it as moving a selected thread out of the inbox and into a folder that can be opened with the device password or biometric authentication. Chat contents are also hidden in notifications, which can help when someone else can see or handle your phone.

In its May 15, 2023 announcement, Meta said the locked folder could be revealed by pulling down on the inbox and authenticating. The announcement’s setup directions were to open the name of a one-to-one or group chat and select the lock option. These are directions from that date, not guaranteed current menu labels or steps for every phone or app version; check the chat’s information or settings in your current WhatsApp app.

Disappearing messages set a lifetime for new messages in a chat. Meta’s first announcement, on November 5, 2020, described a seven-day setting. In December 2021, Meta announced additional durations of 24 hours and 90 days alongside seven days. The available choices and menus can vary with the current app, so check its timer controls rather than assuming those historical announcements describe every current version. Meta’s December 2021 description placed the default timer in Privacy settings. It said the default applied to new one-to-one chats and could be enabled for groups the user created; enabling it did not change existing chats. The original 2020 launch announcement described per-chat controls and said group admins controlled the setting in groups at launch. Group permissions and exact settings paths may have changed, so confirm them in the app you use.
Can someone still save a disappearing message?
Do not treat the timer as a guarantee that a recipient cannot preserve content. The feature announcements describe when messages are set to disappear; they do not establish universal protection against copying or recording content outside those controls. Chat Lock likewise protects access to a thread on your device, not what another person may do with messages they can access.

Can you use Chat Lock and disappearing messages together?
Yes. They address different layers: Chat Lock limits casual access to a selected thread on your phone, while disappearing messages limit how long new messages remain visible in that chat. If both risks matter, using both is a practical option. Meta describes end-to-end encryption as the foundation for WhatsApp calls and messages, with Chat Lock and disappearing messages as additional privacy features—not replacements for encryption.
