A WhatsApp Group is for conversation, a Community organizes several related Groups, and a Channel broadcasts updates to followers. Choose based on whether you want members to talk together, participate in smaller organized spaces, or receive announcements without replying directly.

What’s the difference between a Group, Community, and Channel?

Feature Best for How people interact Structure
Group A shared conversation Members chat with one another; admins manage membership and permissions. One conversation space. WhatsApp Help Center currently states a Group can have up to 1,024 members, checked October 2026. WhatsApp Help Center
Community Organizing related groups, such as groups for a school, club, or local organization Admins can make announcements, while members discuss topics in smaller groups and can reply or react to announcements. An umbrella for topic-based groups; organizers can create groups or add existing ones. WhatsApp Help Center currently states the announcement group can have up to 2,000 members, checked October 2026. Channel Broadcasting updates from a person or organization Followers can react or vote in polls, but cannot reply directly to updates or message admins through the Channel. A one-way feed in WhatsApp’s separate Updates area. Channels can be shared or discovered in WhatsApp. WhatsApp Help Center

These are different interaction models, not three sizes of the same chat. A Community is not simply a large Group: its defining feature is an umbrella that connects related discussion spaces.

When should you use each one?

Choose a Group for a shared conversation

Use a Group when members should be able to talk in the same space—for example, a family coordinating plans or a team discussing a project. Group admins can add or remove members and control whether members may add other people. WhatsApp’s current Help Center limit is up to 1,024 members per Group, checked October 2026. See WhatsApp’s Group guidance.

Choose a Community when one audience needs several discussion spaces

A Community suits an organization whose members need separate topic groups but also need occasional shared announcements. A school, for instance, could organize groups by class under one Community. Organizers can create new groups or bring existing groups together; the arrangement does not require every member to participate in every discussion. WhatsApp Help Center: About communities.

Community admins can post announcements to the announcement group. Members can participate in relevant smaller groups and respond to or react to announcements. WhatsApp Help Center currently states that an announcement group can have up to 2,000 members, checked October 2026. WhatsApp Help Center: About community announcement groups.

Choose a Channel when followers should receive updates, not hold a group discussion

A Channel is a one-to-many publishing feed. Posts may contain text, images, video, stickers, links, audio, and polls. Followers can react with emoji or vote, but they cannot reply directly to a post or message the admin through the Channel. WhatsApp Help Center: About Channels and About creating a WhatsApp Channel.

Channel discovery and some features may vary as WhatsApp rolls them out. Paid Channel subscriptions, where available, are priced and described on each Channel’s information page; there is no universal price established for all Channels. WhatsApp Help Center: About channel subscriptions.

How privacy works across the three features

Privacy has two distinct parts: whether message content is protected and what other participants can learn about membership. End-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls in Community groups does not make participants anonymous or hide who is in a group.

  • Groups: When someone is added to a Group, other members can see that person’s phone number. Admins also have controls over membership and who can add participants. WhatsApp Help Center: Groups
  • Communities: Phone-number visibility is more limited than in a Group. Exceptions include Community admins, people who have saved the member’s number, and people who already have it from another chat. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls in Community groups are end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp Help Center: Communities and WhatsApp Help Center: Privacy in Communities
  • Channels: Other followers cannot see a follower’s name, phone number, profile picture, reactions, or poll votes. Channel admins can see some profile details and interactions; an admin who already has a follower as a contact may see more. WhatsApp Help Center: Channel privacy

Channel recommendations may use Channel information and engagement, general location and language, device and connection information, and activity such as follows, views, interactions, and searches. WhatsApp says personal chats and calls are not used for Channel recommendations; that statement is specifically about recommendations, not a general claim about all data handling. A quick decision guide

  • Do participants need to talk with one another in a shared space? Use a Group.
  • Do you need several related conversations plus a way to make announcements to the broader membership? Use a Community.
  • Should an audience receive updates without directly replying to them? Use a Channel.
