WhatsApp calls recorded clips voice messages. In an individual or group chat, tap or click the microphone, speak, and send; you can cancel, pause, preview, resume, change playback speed, seek through the waveform, use connected headphones, and—where the feature has reached your language and app version—transcribe a message on your device.
How to send a WhatsApp voice message
- Open the individual or group chat where you want to send the recording.
- Select the microphone control and start speaking.
- Use the recording controls before sending:
- Cancel: discard the recording.
- Pause: stop capturing audio temporarily.
- Preview: listen to the draft before sending it.
- Resume: select the microphone control again to continue recording.
- Send the finished recording from the chat composer.
WhatsApp shows microphone indicators for playback status: gray means the recipient has not played the message, while blue means it has been played. The exact control layout can differ between Android, iPhone, desktop and web versions as WhatsApp updates them.

Pause, preview, or restart a recording
Pausing creates a draft rather than sending part of the message. After pausing, play the draft to check clarity, then resume from the same recording. If it is not suitable, cancel it and make a new recording. This is useful for long explanations because you can collect your thoughts without sending several unfinished clips.

Seek with the waveform
Drag the waveform position to jump to a different point in the recording instead of replaying it from the beginning.
Change playback speed
Use the speed control beside the playing message to switch from normal 1x to 1.5x or 2x. Faster playback is useful for lengthy notes, while 1x is usually easier for unfamiliar names, directions or detailed instructions.

Use headphones
Connected headphones route playback away from the phone or computer speaker. Headphones with a microphone also provide a practical setup when you want to record without using the device’s built-in microphone; check the connector or wireless compatibility for your device.

WhatsApp introduced transcripts as an on-device feature: the audio is converted to text on the user’s device rather than by sending the recording to a separate transcription service. Availability and supported languages depend on the rollout, app version and device.

- Open Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts.
- Turn on the feature and choose a supported language if WhatsApp presents that option.
- In a chat, long-press the voice message and select Transcribe.
Transcription helps when listening is impractical, but treat the result as a convenience rather than a guaranteed verbatim record: language support and recognition quality can vary.
View Once voice messages
View Once is for a recording intended to disappear after one listen. WhatsApp marks the message with a one-time icon and protects it with end-to-end encryption by default.

Send one
- Open an individual or group chat and begin recording.
- Choose the View Once option in the recording composer.
- Send the message. You must select View Once each time; it is not a permanent default.
What the recipient can and cannot do
- The recipient must open the message within 14 days; otherwise it expires unopened.
- After it is listened to once, the voice message disappears.
- WhatsApp does not allow a View Once voice message to be forwarded, copied, saved, starred or shared.
- End-to-end encryption protects the WhatsApp delivery, but it cannot prevent someone from recording the playback with another device. If the recipient reports the media, WhatsApp says it may receive the reported content.

Which controls solve common problems?
- The recording is too long: pause, preview, then trim your thought by cancelling and re-recording; the documented controls do not provide an in-composer trim tool.
- You need to find one sentence again: drag the waveform instead of replaying from the start.
- You are in a noisy or public place: listen through connected headphones.
- You cannot listen right now: try Transcribe after enabling Voice message transcripts, if your language and rollout support it.
- The message is sensitive: View Once limits WhatsApp actions after sending, but it does not stop an external recording.
What WhatsApp’s usage figure means
In a March 30, 2022 announcement, Meta said: “On WhatsApp, 7 billion voice messages are sent daily on average.” That is a global average published by Meta for 2022, not a current measurement for every country, account or day.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm that WhatsApp has microphone permission on the phone or computer.
- For headphones, check that they are connected before starting playback and that the device has selected them as the audio output.
- If speed controls, View Once or Transcribe are missing, update WhatsApp and check again; WhatsApp can expose features progressively by platform, account and region.
- If a transcript is unavailable, verify that Voice message transcripts is enabled and that the selected language is supported in your rollout.
- If a View Once message will not open, remember the recipient has a 14-day opening window and the message cannot be replayed after its single listen.
