You can change your Twitter password—Twitter is now called X—while signed in from Settings and privacy → Your account → Change your password. If you forgot the password, use Forgot password? on the sign-in screen and verify by email or SMS.
Change your password while signed in
The steps are similar in the X mobile app and on the web, but the navigation labels differ.
iPhone, iPad, and Android app
- Open the X app and sign in.
- Open the navigation menu and tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Your account.
- Tap Change your password.
- Enter your current password.
- Enter the new password, then enter it again under Confirm password.
- Tap Done.
Desktop web browser
- Go to X.com and sign in.
- Click More in the navigation bar.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Under Your account, click Change your password.
- Enter your current password and the new password twice.
- Click Save.
If you forgot your password
- At the X sign-in page, click or tap Forgot password?.
- Enter the account’s email address, phone number, or username.
- Choose email or SMS when X offers a verification destination.
- Enter the verification code.
- Set and confirm a new password.
Reset codes sent by email or SMS are valid for 60 minutes. A password reset logs out active X sessions.
Email versus SMS recovery

If you no longer have the email or phone
X uses the linked email address or phone number to verify account ownership, so recovery options are limited without access to either one.

- Use the username option in the password-reset flow to identify the account’s available recovery channel.
- If neither channel is available, contact X Support and provide the account details they request. Do not give your password to anyone claiming to provide recovery help.
Choose a safer replacement password
X recommends creating a password of at least 10 characters. Make it unique to X and combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid names, birthdays, common sequences, and any password used on another site.
- Store the password in a reputable password manager rather than reusing or writing it in an exposed location.
- Enable two-factor authentication so sign-in requires a second check, such as a phone method or security key.
- Turn on password-reset protection in the account security settings.
If you think someone accessed the account
- Change the password immediately, or complete the forgotten-password reset if you cannot sign in.
- Review connected applications in Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Apps and sessions → Connected apps, then revoke anything unfamiliar.
- Secure the email account linked to X by changing its password and enabling two-factor authentication there as well.
Changing the password does not automatically sign out every X session in the iOS or Android apps. Revoking a suspicious app connection forces that app to request the new password the next time it launches.

Avoid password-reset phishing
- Before entering credentials, confirm that the address bar uses the x.com base domain.
- Open x.com directly instead of following an unsolicited reset link.
- X will not ask for your password by email, Direct Message, or reply.
Troubleshoot reset problems
The reset message is missing
Confirm that you entered the correct email address or phone number, then check spam, junk, and filtered-message folders. Requesting another code can invalidate an earlier one.
The link or code does not work
Use the newest code before its 60-minute validity period ends. If the page still fails, try another browser or computer, allow cookies, and clear the browser cache before starting a fresh reset.

You see “Locked out!”
A temporary security lock normally clears after about an hour. Avoid repeatedly requesting resets while waiting, then try the recovery flow again.

Which method should you use?
