De’Longhi’s labels mainly describe how much preparation the machine takes off your hands. Manual machines leave the portafilter routine to you; semi-automatic machines automate brewing while you grind and tamp; and fully automatic or super-automatic models handle more of the bean-to-cup process, with some adding one-touch milk drinks. Since “automatic” can cover different workflows, compare the specific steps and milk features of each model rather than relying on its category name alone.
What each De’Longhi category does
De’Longhi uses these terms to describe preparation workflows, not a universal guarantee of features. Its category guidance distinguishes semi-automatic, fully automatic and super-automatic machines, while product and buying pages may use “automatic” more broadly for bean-to-cup machines.

| Category | What you do | What the machine does | Workflow fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual | Fill the portafilter with ground coffee, tamp it and lock it into the group head. If the machine has a steam wand, you prepare and texture milk yourself. | Heats water and applies brewing pressure; exact controls vary by model. | For someone who wants a hands-on routine and to practice espresso preparation. |
| Semi-automatic | Grind and tamp, then manage shot timing and milk frothing according to De’Longhi’s category description. | Automates brewing. Some models add grinder or tamping aids. | For someone who wants assistance but still wants to make key preparation choices. |
| Fully automatic / super-automatic | Select a recipe or settings; milk handling depends on the model. | De’Longhi says fully automatic machines handle grinding, tamping and brewing. Super-automatic descriptions emphasize one-touch preparation and may include automatic milk frothing. | For someone prioritizing convenience and less hands-on preparation. |
De’Longhi’s manual guidance describes the user-controlled portafilter process: fill it with ground coffee, tamp, lock it into the group head and brew. Its category description for semi-automatic espresso puts the distinction this way: “Grind & tamp your way. The espresso machine automates the brewing.” De’Longhi’s espresso-machine category guidance describes the automatic categories and their workflows.

“Automatic” is not a reliable shorthand for every task being automated. De’Longhi’s materials distinguish fully automatic machines, which handle grinding, tamping and brewing, from super-automatic descriptions that stress one-touch preparation. Elsewhere, the company uses “automatic” as an umbrella for bean-to-cup machines. Check the model’s feature list to see whether it grinds, tamps, brews, and prepares milk automatically.
#1 Best Overall
- Please refer to user guide or user manual or user guide (provided below in PDF) before first use
- Includes Portafilter, measuring scoop/tamper and two filters for single or double espresso
- Stainless steel boiler is engineered to last long and work for years
- Manual steam wand to texture milk for lattes and cappuccinos
Milk preparation is a separate decision from espresso automation. De’Longhi says a fully automatic machine may use a manual steam nozzle or an automatic LatteCrema system; therefore, an automatic espresso machine does not necessarily make a milk drink with one touch. De’Longhi’s manual-versus-fully-automatic explanation outlines the company’s terminology.
How to choose the right workflow
- Decide how much preparation you want to do. Manual machines involve filling and tamping the portafilter. Automatic bean-to-cup machines reduce those steps and put more of the routine behind buttons. De’Longhi presents this as a preference for hands-on preparation versus touch-of-a-button convenience, not as proof that one category universally makes better coffee. De’Longhi’s category overview and manual-versus-automatic guidance describe the trade-off.
- Evaluate milk separately. Check whether the exact model has a steam wand or an automatic milk system, and whether the milk workflow is manual or one-touch. Do not infer milk automation from “automatic” alone.
- Compare drinks and controls by model. Drink variety, interface and available settings differ across machines. Use the current product listing and its manual to confirm the recipes and adjustments offered.
- Check cleaning and care requirements. Some bean-to-cup machines include automatic milk-carafe cleaning or descaling functions; manual machines also need regular descaling. Follow the machine’s manual and compatibility guidance for descaler, water filters and cleaning products.
- Verify the specific model, not just the family. De’Longhi’s US catalog includes manual examples such as Dedica and La Specialista, and automatic machines in the Magnifica range. These examples identify product families, not features guaranteed across every model. De’Longhi’s US catalog lists its current categories and products.
What the category comparison cannot establish
De’Longhi’s guidance explains the intended workflows, but it does not establish that manual, automatic or super-automatic machines produce better espresso than one another. The cited material also provides no independent comparison of reliability or lifetime cost. Treat the categories as a guide to who performs each step, then assess the exact machine’s features and care requirements.

- PERSONALIZE WITH MY LATTE: Allows you to personalize and save your own recipes
- EASY TO CLEAN: Removable and dishwasher-safe parts for easy cleaning
For a manual-preparation example, De’Longhi describes a single shot using around 10 grams of coffee and taking around 18–23 seconds. That is the manufacturer’s example, not a universal recipe or timing target; dose and shot timing should not be generalized to all machines or coffees. De’Longhi’s espresso-machine guidance provides the example.
