What’s the Difference Between a Chromebook and a Laptop?

A Chromebook is a laptop that runs ChromeOS. Here’s how to compare it with Windows and Mac laptops by apps, offline use, updates, and hardware.

A Chromebook is a type of laptop: it runs Google’s ChromeOS. “Laptop” describes a portable computer’s form, not its operating system, so other laptops may run Windows or macOS. The useful comparison is between specific devices and the software, offline work, and hardware you need—not between two mutually exclusive categories.

What’s the difference between a Chromebook and other laptops?

The distinction is primarily the operating system. Google describes Chromebooks as computers that run ChromeOS, while other laptops may use Windows or macOS. A laptop label alone does not tell you which programs it supports or how it handles your files.

Google describes ChromeOS as “an operating system that has cloud storage, the best of Google built-in, and multiple layers of security.” That is Google’s description of its platform, not an independent comparison showing that every Chromebook is more secure than every other laptop. What can you do on a Chromebook?

Chromebooks can handle common tasks such as browsing, writing, email, and working with files, but the exact options depend on the apps and model. Google says many Microsoft Office files can be opened, edited, downloaded, and converted on Chromebooks. That does not mean every Windows desktop program is available or compatible.

Android apps are available only on Chromebook models that support them. Some devices also offer an optional Linux development environment for command-line tools, editors, and IDEs. Linux support may be unavailable on managed school or work devices, and Google lists limitations including unsupported hardware acceleration and camera access in Linux apps. Check the app and device requirements for any program you rely on: Google Chromebook Help: Set up Linux on your Chromebook.

Do Chromebooks work offline?

Yes, some Chromebook tasks work offline, provided the relevant app and content are available without an internet connection. Google lists composing email, writing notes and documents, viewing locally saved photos, and playing saved media as examples. Offline access is not automatic for every app or file, so confirm that your own workflow works without a connection. Google Chromebook Help: Use your Chromebook offline.

How to choose between a Chromebook and another laptop

Start with the programs you need, then compare complete models. A Chromebook may suit your workflow if its ChromeOS apps and supported file handling cover your tasks. If you depend on a particular Windows or macOS desktop application, verify that it runs on the exact device before buying; do not assume that Office-file support is equivalent to compatibility with the full Windows version of Office or another desktop program.

What to compare What to check
Applications Confirm that each required program is supported on the device and operating system. For Chromebooks, check model support for Android apps or Linux if you need them.
Offline work Check whether your apps and the files you need are available offline; do not assume that cloud-based workflows will work without a connection.
File compatibility Test the specific file types and features your work requires. Support for many Microsoft Office files is not a promise that every desktop program or feature will work.
Updates Check the update end date for the exact Chromebook model, particularly when considering an older or discounted device. Google says updates download automatically when the device is connected to the internet; its help page explains how to find a model’s update schedule.
Hardware and cost Compare processor, memory, storage, ports, screen, keyboard, battery, and total price against your workload. These vary by model; there is no universal category-wide winner for performance, battery life, or price.

Google’s Chromebook Auto Update policy provides instructions for checking device update schedules. Accessories such as external storage, mice, and keyboards may also help with a local-file or desk setup; check the Chromebook’s ports and accessory compatibility before choosing them.
