What’s the Best USB Drive Format for Your TV?

There’s no universal best USB format for TVs. Check your exact model and intended use before formatting, since support varies by brand and feature.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single USB drive format that works best with every TV. Check your exact TV model’s manual or support page, then choose a file system it lists for your intended use. FAT32, NTFS, exFAT and other formats are not interchangeable across brands and models.

Check your TV model before choosing a format

Find the model number on the TV’s settings screen, rear label or original paperwork, then look up its USB instructions on the manufacturer’s support site. Check guidance for the specific task—such as playing media, recording, pausing live TV or storage expansion—because requirements can differ.

Official guidance illustrates why a universal recommendation would be unreliable:

Support source What it says Scope and caveat
LG USA Support, article published July 17, 2026 Recommends FAT32 or NTFS and USB memory of 32 GB or less. Applies to TVs covered by that article, not every LG TV or other brand.
Sony UK Support, last modified September 20, 2022 Its table lists NTFS, FAT32, FAT16 and exFAT, with exFAT support varying among the model groups shown. Use the table’s model-series scope; it is not a universal rule for Sony TVs.
Sony USA Support, last modified January 19, 2026 Says most BRAVIA models support FAT16, FAT32 and exFAT for USB playback; newer BRAVIA models from 2013 onward support NTFS. Sony cautions that some files may not play even when their format is supported.
Roku Support For the Roku streaming players covered, lists FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3 and HFS+, and says exFAT is unsupported. This guidance concerns Roku streaming-player USB playback. Roku TV live-pause has separate formatting behavior.

These examples are starting points, not a substitute for your TV’s current model-specific documentation.

Match the format to what you want to do

Playing movies, photos or music

Use a file system listed for USB media playback on your exact TV. A TV recognizing the drive does not guarantee it can play every file on it. Sony notes that playback may not be possible for some files even when the format is supported; check both the TV’s file-system guidance and its supported media-file types.

Recording or pausing live TV

Do not assume playback instructions also apply to recording or live pause. Roku says its Roku TV live-pause feature prompts users to reformat the drive, which is a distinct use from ordinary media playback. Follow the instructions for the exact TV and feature before letting the TV format a drive.

Using a drive with large individual files

If a media file exceeds the per-file limit of a format, you may need a different file system—but only choose one your TV supports. The cited manufacturer guidance varies, so it does not establish a universal file-size limit or make exFAT or NTFS safe choices for every TV.

Back up the drive before formatting

Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents. Copy anything you want to keep to another location first; Sony’s USB storage guidance also advises backing up USB media. Then use the formatting method specified in the TV’s instructions. Avoid formatting a drive for live pause, recording or other TV functions until you are ready to dedicate it to that task.

If the TV does not recognize the USB drive

A format mismatch is only one possible cause. Check these in order:

  1. Confirm the file system. Compare the drive’s current format with the exact TV model’s supported list. If it is unsupported, back up its contents before reformatting it to a supported option.
  2. Connect the drive directly. LG identifies extension cables as a possible cause of recognition problems for the TVs covered by its troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Check external-drive power needs. For the TVs covered by its article, LG recommends external USB hard drives rated at 5 V and 500 mA or less. This is LG model-specific guidance, not a general limit for all TVs.
  4. Check for software or driver issues. LG lists autorun software and proprietary drivers as possible causes of a drive not appearing.
  5. Check the task and the files separately. A drive may be recognized while a particular media file cannot play. For recording or live pause, consult the task-specific instructions rather than troubleshooting it as ordinary playback.

Which format should you choose?

Choose the file system your exact TV supports for the job you have in mind. If the manufacturer lists multiple options, consider the files and intended use, then follow the TV’s instructions. Do not format based only on another brand’s advice or a general claim that one format is best.
