Selenium Manager 0.4.12, released with Selenium 4.12.0, added automatic Firefox discovery, download and caching. It also introduced configurable cache locations, unified browser-and-driver metadata expiry under ttl, and a universal macOS binary for Intel and Apple silicon. This is a historical release summary, not an indication of the current Selenium Manager version.
Firefox management was the headline change
Before this release, Selenium Manager’s browser-management support did not include Firefox. In 0.4.12, when Firefox is unavailable on the machine running Selenium, the manager can discover, download and cache it. With no version specified, it manages the latest stable Firefox. The release article describes support for Firefox releases on Windows, Linux and macOS.
You can request a specific Firefox release through a binding’s browserVersion option, or choose a channel with stable, beta, dev or nightly. Selenium says Mozilla’s public release repository and product-details JSON API made this version discovery and management possible. Cache location and configuration files changed
The release added the --cache-path argument for changing where Selenium Manager stores downloaded browser and driver assets. The documented default is ~/.cache/selenium; the location can also be set in the configuration file or with the SE_CACHE_PATH environment variable.

The configuration file was renamed to se-config.toml, and the metadata file to se-metadata.json. Both reside at the root of the cache folder. Metadata records versions discovered through network requests and how long those discovered versions are considered valid. The versioned Selenium Manager changelog also records these file and cache changes in its 0.4.12 entry.
Browser and driver expiry now share one TTL
Selenium Manager combined the former browser_ttl and driver_ttl settings into ttl. The Selenium Project’s 2023 release article gives a default of 3,600 seconds (one hour). This is the period used for cached version-discovery metadata validity, not a promise that every browser or driver asset is re-downloaded on that schedule.

macOS support and stabilization work
The Selenium Manager macOS binary became universal for x64 and arm64, so Rosetta is no longer mandatory to run the manager on an arm64 Mac. The stabilization release also included fixes and implementation changes involving driver management, cache behavior, browser-path discovery, stable-channel detection, executable permissions, downloaded binary defaults, and dependency updates. These are release notes rather than a quantified performance claim.
Selenium 4.12.0 included Selenium Manager fixes and Firefox management in its release highlights. It was released on August 31, 2023, with Java, .NET, Ruby, Python and JavaScript bindings as well as Grid; the manager release article appeared August 28, 2023. See the Selenium 4.12.0 announcement.

Which changes matter for your setup?
- Firefox absent on the runner: the new management behavior can discover and cache the browser, with stable as the default when no version is requested.
- A test needs a particular release: set the binding’s
browserVersionoption to the desired version or supported channel. - Shared, restricted or custom storage: use
--cache-path,SE_CACHE_PATHor the configuration file to place the cache where your environment permits. - Cache freshness matters: the unified
ttlsetting replaces the separate browser and driver TTL controls documented before this release. - Apple silicon Mac: the universal binary removes the requirement to run the manager through Rosetta.
