Use a real browser context that has the app’s authenticated session, wait until the embedded app visibly shows its signed-in state, then capture either the iframe or the whole host page with Playwright. Restoring saved authentication state is convenient for repeat captures, but it is sensitive and may not work for every embedded app or browser configuration.
Capture an authenticated iframe with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then replace the sample host URL, iframe selector, and readiness check with values for the app you need to capture. The example assumes you have already saved an authenticated browser state file at playwright/.auth/user.json.

Set up or restore the login state
Save state after signing in
For repeatable captures, first run the app’s normal login flow in a browser context and save its storage state. Playwright’s authentication guidance describes saving the state and loading it into later contexts. A state file can contain cookies and headers that let someone impersonate the account, so exclude it from source control and protect it like a credential. Playwright authentication guide

Use the same context for the embedded app
Create the context with the saved state before navigating to the host page, as in the example. Browser context storage state includes cookies and local storage, and can include IndexedDB snapshots. Session storage needs special handling; do not assume it is restored automatically. The embedded app may use a separate origin or authentication behavior, and restored state is not guaranteed to work in every browser configuration. Check that the session is still valid
Saved sessions can expire. Wait for a visible, app-specific indication that the right account is signed in, such as a dashboard heading, account name, or loaded-data marker. If it does not appear, rerun login and save fresh state rather than capturing a login screen.

Choose what the screenshot should include
- Only the iframe: capture the iframe element, as in the example.
- A particular control or panel inside the app: locate that element through the frame locator and call its screenshot method.
- The host page viewport: call
page.screenshot({ path: 'host.png' }); this includes the page around the embedded app. - The full scrollable host page: call
page.screenshot({ path: 'host-full.png', fullPage: true }). Full-page capture applies to the host page; it is not interchangeable with capturing just the iframe.

Wait for app readiness, not just navigation
A completed navigation does not prove that an asynchronously loaded embedded app has rendered its data. Use a visible marker that means the target view is ready for your purpose. There is no universal iframe selector, readiness signal, or fixed delay that works across apps. If the app has no stable heading, choose another observable state that distinguishes the final authenticated view from a loading screen, login prompt, or error. Avoid making a screenshot depend on a guessed sleep interval when a specific element can be awaited.
When to use Chrome DevTools Protocol
For most automation, Playwright’s page and locator screenshot methods are the higher-level route. If you need lower-level Chromium capture controls, Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page domain provides Page.captureScreenshot, including format and capture-region controls. Playwright can attach to an existing Chromium browser with connectOverCDP, but its documentation notes that this connection has lower fidelity than Playwright’s native protocol connection. Troubleshooting
- The screenshot shows a login screen: the saved session may have expired, may not include the storage the app needs, or may not be accepted by the embedded app. Sign in in the capture context, refresh the saved state if using it, and verify the signed-in account in the rendered iframe.
- The iframe locator cannot find the app: confirm the host page has loaded the iframe and use a selector that identifies the actual iframe. If the frame is inserted asynchronously, wait for the iframe element before locating its contents.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: wait for an app-specific loaded-data marker inside the frame, rather than assuming that host-page navigation completion means the embedded app is ready.
- The saved state is missing part of the session: check whether the app depends on session storage; Playwright identifies this as a case requiring separate handling.
- The image contains more or less than intended: choose the target deliberately: inner app element, iframe element, host viewport, or full host page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API capture a private iframe using my browser’s login?
Not simply by receiving the page URL. A private app may require the authenticated browser context that loads it; verify the API’s authentication model before relying on it for a signed-in capture.
Should I save the screenshot authentication state in my project?
Keep it out of source control. Playwright state files may contain credentials capable of accessing the account.
