What’s Inside a Desktop PC? The Parts and How They Work Together

A clear guide to the parts inside a desktop PC, what each one does, and the compatibility checks that matter before a build or upgrade.

A desktop PC is a system of connected parts: the processor handles instructions, RAM holds data in active use, storage keeps files, and the motherboard links the components. A power supply, cooling, and a case support their operation. Many systems also need a separate graphics card, but everyday tasks may be served by a processor with integrated graphics.

Which parts make up a desktop PC?

The core internal components are the CPU, motherboard, RAM, storage, power supply, cooling, and case. A discrete GPU is an additional component when the workload or processor’s graphics capabilities call for one. The display, keyboard, mouse, and operating system complete a usable setup, but they are not internal components.

CPU: the processor

The central processing unit (CPU) executes program instructions and coordinates general computing tasks. Cores and threads let a processor handle work across multiple tasks, but core count or peak frequency alone does not determine real-world speed. Match the CPU to the intended workload, motherboard platform, and cooling. Intel’s PC build guide describes the processor as sitting directly on the motherboard.

Motherboard: the connection point

The motherboard is the main circuit board connecting the components and providing their interfaces. As Intel puts it, “The motherboard is the main circuit board and is connected to everything.” It constrains which CPU, memory, storage, expansion cards, and external connections a system can support. The chipset also affects features such as PCIe lanes, storage connections, and USB. A matching socket name alone does not prove a processor is supported; check the exact board’s CPU support information and manual. See Intel’s motherboard buying guide.

RAM: temporary working memory

Random-access memory (RAM) temporarily holds data that the CPU and applications need quickly. It is not the same as storage: RAM is working space, while storage retains files when the PC is off. The CPU and motherboard together determine supported memory generation, capacity, speed, and module configuration.

Memory recommendations depend on use. Intel’s current gaming guide recommends 16 GB as a minimum for modern gaming; Dell’s 2026 beginner guide calls 16 GB a solid starting point for most modern builds and says lighter tasks may work with 8 GB. These are attributed recommendations, not universal requirements for every PC. Check the memory support details for the specific processor and motherboard.

GPU: graphics processing

A graphics processing unit (GPU) produces visual output. A discrete GPU is a separate graphics card, usually installed in a PCIe x16 slot; it can matter greatly for demanding games, video editing, rendering, and similar work. Integrated graphics are built into some processors and can be sufficient for everyday tasks on an appropriate system. For a specific game or application, compare performance at the resolution and settings you plan to use rather than relying on a universal ranking.

Storage: files that persist

Storage holds the operating system, applications, and files after power is off. Solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs) are different storage types. M.2 refers to a physical form factor, while NVMe is a storage protocol/interface context; the terms are not interchangeable. Confirm which drives and interfaces the motherboard supports. Dell’s 2026 beginner guide describes NVMe SSDs as a standard choice for many modern builds, but the right option depends on capacity, interface support, and budget.

PSU: power for the system

The power supply unit (PSU) converts and supplies electricity to the PC’s components. It must have suitable capacity and the connectors required by the chosen parts. Intel calls PSU selection a critical step and advises accounting for both current and future components. Dell’s 2026 guide suggests estimating system draw and adding roughly 20–30% headroom; treat that as Dell’s recommendation, not a universal electrical standard. Check the requirements for the actual CPU and graphics card rather than choosing by wattage alone.

Cooling and case: heat management and fit

Heat is carried away from components by heatsinks, fans, or liquid-cooling assemblies. The case houses and protects the parts, provides mounting points, and influences airflow. A typical airflow arrangement may move air from front to back, but the right fan and cooler layout depends on the case and hardware. Intel’s thermal-management guidance offers general background; follow the current instructions for the specific case, cooler, and components.

How do PC parts have to be compatible?

Think of a parts list as one system, not a set of independent purchases. Compatibility spans electrical support, interfaces, firmware, and physical dimensions. Before buying, use the motherboard manual and current component specifications to verify the following:

  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
  • CPU and motherboard: Confirm socket, chipset, processor generation support, and any firmware requirements. Use the board’s exact processor support information.
  • Memory: Match the supported DDR generation, capacity, speed, module count, and slot placement. Follow the motherboard’s recommended slots.
  • Storage: Check the available M.2 slots and supported protocols, as well as SATA connections if needed. Ensure the selected drive matches the supported interface.
  • Graphics: Decide whether integrated graphics meet the workload or a discrete card is needed. For a discrete card, confirm slot, power connectors, PSU capacity, and case clearance.
  • Power and cooling: Verify PSU capacity and connectors, cooler compatibility and capability, and the case’s airflow provisions.
  • Physical layout and upgrades: Match motherboard form factor to the case and check space for the GPU, cooler, drives, and any planned expansion cards.
  • Workload and budget: Prioritize the parts that affect the intended work. Gaming and graphics-heavy tasks may justify a stronger discrete GPU; general everyday use may not.

How should you choose components for your use?

Start with what the computer needs to do, then select parts that meet that target within the budget. Office work, gaming, content creation, and rendering have different demands. There is no workload-independent “best” CPU or GPU, and a higher tier in every category is not automatically a better-balanced build.

  • For everyday computing: A suitable CPU with integrated graphics can avoid the cost and power needs of a separate graphics card. Choose memory and storage for the applications and files you expect to use.
  • For gaming: A discrete GPU is often a key part of the performance target. Compare benchmarks for the specific games, resolution, and settings you care about, then confirm power and physical requirements.
  • For creation or rendering: Identify the applications first; their CPU, GPU, memory, and storage demands vary. Use application-specific performance information instead of assuming one component category always matters most.
  • For a mixed-use build: Balance the parts around the most demanding regular task, while leaving enough capacity for the other work and any realistic upgrade plans.

What tools and setup does a first build need?

A Phillips screwdriver is sufficient for most installations, according to Dell’s 2026 beginner guide. An anti-static wrist strap and a tray for small parts are optional aids. Follow the manuals for the motherboard, case, cooler, and other components; the exact assembly order varies with the hardware.

Dell’s guide gives one practical sequence: install the CPU, cooler, RAM, and storage; mount the motherboard and PSU; add remaining drives and a discrete GPU if used; connect cables; check BIOS; then install the operating system. Intel’s build guide likewise advises planning a compatible list and consulting the motherboard manual for M.2 slots and RAM placement. Treat the sequence as a guide, not a universal procedure: case access and component design can change what is easiest or required.
