Repeating or moving a run can also depend on the Python runtime, direct and transitive packages, custom preprocessing code, the dataset, configuration, and the code revision that produced the results. A package manifest records only part of that context; a run record and a tested model environment answer different questions.
What can a training run depend on beyond its script?
The script shows instructions, but not necessarily the exact environment or inputs under which they ran. For a useful record, inventory the context that could affect execution or results:

- Runtime: Python version and relevant build tools.
- Packages: direct requirements and the transitive packages they rely on.
- Custom code: preprocessing modules and other code imported by the run.
- Data: dataset identity or version, not merely a broad dataset name.
- Run configuration: parameters and other settings supplied at execution.
- Provenance and outputs: source-code revision, metrics, and artifacts such as model weights.
These pieces serve different purposes. A model environment describes what is needed to run the model; experiment tracking can preserve information about how a particular run was conducted and what it produced. MLflow documents both mechanisms, but its documentation does not establish that any one tool captures every dependency for every framework or stack.
What MLflow records for a model environment
For a logged MLflow model, the documented environment files include python_env.yaml, requirements.txt, and, optionally, conda.yaml. MLflow says the Python environment file can include the Python version and build tools, while the requirements file defines pip dependencies. Together, these files describe the model’s runtime requirements; they are not a complete record of the training data, parameters, code revision, and results.
#1 Best Overall
- ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT DESIGN: The mobile standing desk promotes a healthier workstyle by allowing quick transitions between sitting and standing. The gas spring lift smoothly adjusts the height from 28.3in to 44in, supporting better posture and reducing neck and back strain during long working hours. This portable desk improves daily comfort and productivity across different environments.
- SUPERIOR STABILITY AND DURABILITY: The rolling desk adjustable height model stands out with its sturdy H shaped steel base and reinforced structure, providing stability even at maximum extension. The waterproof and scratch resistant MDF desktop ensures long lasting use, while the retractable keyboard tray and hook create organized storage for accessories. This unique design differentiates the desk from standard folding table or rolling podium options on the market.
- ERGONOMIC AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN: The portable standing desk offers a spacious 25.6 x 17.7in surface to accommodate a laptop, monitor, or books. A dedicated slot holds phones and tablets, while the 23.6 x 11.8in keyboard tray supports a full size keyboard and mouse. The thoughtful structure allows the small standing desk to serve as a side table, study cart, or computer desk with keyboard tray in living rooms, bedrooms, and offices.
- EASY MOBILITY WITH LOCKABLE WHEELS: The adjustable rolling desk includes four caster wheels that allow smooth movement between rooms. The lockable function secures the desk in place when needed, creating flexibility for use as a rolling laptop desk, classroom furniture, or teacher standing desk. The compact rolling table design makes the desk on wheels easy to move, while maintaining stability during presentations or study sessions.
- EASY OPERATION AND LOW MAINTENANCE: The sit stand desk is operated with a simple hand lever that activates the gas spring for smooth upward adjustment, while gentle pressure lowers the surface. The mobile desk workstation requires minimal maintenance, as the MDF board is waterproof, scratch resistant, and easy to clean with a damp cloth. This reliable raising desk minimizes user effort and ensures long term durability without complex upkeep.
Inferred requirements versus locked versions
Dependency inference is convenient, but it can be incomplete. MLflow’s troubleshooting guidance warns that inference may miss requirements, including extras for some libraries. When exact versions matter, MLflow documents an option to lock direct and transitive dependencies. This option has been available since MLflow 2.16.0 and uses uv if it is installed. If uv is unavailable, MLflow skips the locking step and uses ordinary dependency inference.
Locking improves specificity, but comes with maintenance costs: MLflow notes that it can make the requirements file larger and the environment more rigid. A locked file is therefore a more detailed record, not a guarantee that the environment will work unchanged on every target system.

What belongs in the experiment record
MLflow Tracking can record run metadata, including parameters, metrics, and times, as well as artifacts such as model weights and images. It can also associate datasets with training events. These records help answer questions a dependency file cannot: which configuration ran, what data was associated with it, and what outputs resulted.

Remote tracking and artifact storage are options when runs need to be shared. The appropriate setup depends on whether the record is for one person’s local work or needs to be available to a team.

How to make a run easier to repeat
- Inventory the execution context. Record the Python version, package requirements, custom preprocessing code, dataset identity or version, run parameters, code revision, and produced artifacts.
- Separate environment capture from run tracking. Preserve model dependency files for runtime requirements, and use a run record for parameters, metrics, artifacts, and dataset associations.
- Decide whether inferred or locked dependencies suit the use case. Inference may omit requirements. Locking captures direct and transitive versions when enabled with
uvavailable, but increases file size and rigidity. - Validate in the intended context. MLflow recommends sandbox validation and documents checks using virtual environments or Docker-based prediction. A virtual environment alone may not reproduce issues caused by differences between operating systems.
- Choose where records live. Local tracking may suit individual work; remote tracking and artifact storage support sharing when runs need to be available elsewhere.
Why validation still matters
A dependency file is a description of an environment, not proof that the model will run in the place it is deployed. MLflow recommends validating in a sandbox or virtual environment, and documents Docker-based prediction checks as another way to test a serving environment. Operating-system differences can cause problems that a virtual environment alone does not reproduce, so validation should reflect the intended target as closely as practical.
MLflow’s documentation puts the deployment risk plainly: “One of the most common issues experienced during model deployment centers around dependency issues.” The practical response is to record the environment and run provenance, then test the recorded model in its intended context.

What a dependency record can—and cannot—tell you
| Record or practice | What it helps capture | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Model environment files | Python runtime details and package requirements for the model. | Do not by themselves preserve the full run history, dataset association, parameters, or outputs. |
| Dependency inference | Requirements identified from the model and its environment. | May miss dependencies, including some library extras. |
| Locked dependencies | Exact direct and transitive package versions when locking is enabled and uv is available. |
Can enlarge the requirements file and make the environment more rigid; does not guarantee portability across operating systems. |
| Experiment tracking | Run metadata, parameters, metrics, artifacts, and dataset associations. | Does not by itself prove that the recorded environment works on a target platform. |
| Sandbox or Docker validation | A check of model behavior in an isolated or serving-like environment. | Results are most relevant when the test context reflects the intended deployment platform. |
