Your phone can still do useful work with the screen off: play music, fetch mail, sync photos, or continue navigation. To see which apps used battery, check Settings > Battery on iPhone or the battery-usage screen on Android. These records show reported energy use and activity; they are not a complete log of everything an app did or proof of misconduct.
What is my phone doing overnight?
A screen-off phone may perform background tasks such as syncing, fetching mail, playing audio, or completing navigation. Apple describes these as examples of background activity. Notifications and weak cellular coverage can also affect battery use. An app appearing in a usage list means the device recorded activity or energy use for the period shown; it does not mean every installed app is continuously running.

How do I check which apps used battery on iPhone?
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review App and System Activity. To inspect another day, tap View All Battery Usage, choose a day, and scroll through the app and system details.
- Tap an app to see more detail. On screen refers to activity while the app or system task was visible; Background refers to activity while it was not on screen.
Apple’s iOS 26 guide says additional battery information is available for today and the previous week. The Battery view is useful for finding energy contributors, but it does not establish how much personal data an app sent.
How do I check background activity on Android?
On Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Select View by apps and tap an app to inspect or change Allow background usage.
- Google recommends Optimized for most apps. Choose a more restrictive setting only if you understand its effect on that app.
On other Android phones
Android menus vary by manufacturer and version. Search Settings for “Battery usage,” or consult your phone maker’s support information if those labels do not appear. Pixel’s path and controls should not be assumed to match every Android device.

Why did my battery drain while I was asleep?
Background syncing, mail fetching, audio, navigation, notifications, and poor cellular coverage can all contribute. Compare the overnight period with other days in the battery view, and check any battery suggestions or insights your phone provides. Apple says iOS 18 and later may identify temporary background activity, such as an ongoing update or device setup.
Battery Saver on Android can limit or turn off background activity, and may delay apps, network connections, or features. On iPhone, Low Power Mode reduces or disables some features, including Background App Refresh. These modes can help conserve charge, but may delay expected syncing or notifications.

Does battery usage show what apps did with my data?
No. Battery usage reports energy and activity categories, not a comprehensive record of app behavior or data transfers. On iPhone, Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report is a separate privacy feature. Once enabled, it can show selected data and sensor access and network activity from the past seven days. It begins collecting information only after you turn it on, so details may not appear immediately.
Should I restrict an app’s background use?
Consider what the app needs to do when you are not using it. Restricting background use can reduce activity, but may delay notifications or syncing, or cause an app to work unexpectedly. If you rely on an app for timely alerts or updates, leave its background access intact unless you are comfortable with those trade-offs. For an unexplained drain, first compare usage periods and review the phone’s own battery guidance rather than disabling background activity across the board.
