There is no validated, general-purpose PC specification for running PS5 games in an emulator. The projects discussed here are experimental, support varies by emulator and game, and a PC that meets one project’s software requirements is not thereby guaranteed to run a particular title. Before buying parts or changing your operating system, check the exact emulator build and the current compatibility status of the game you want to try.
Why there is no reliable PS5 emulator PC requirements list
A published minimum specification normally tells you that a defined class of computer can run defined software under stated conditions. The sources available for PS5 emulation do not establish that kind of general threshold: there is no validated minimum CPU, GPU, memory amount, storage target, price, or expected frame rate that applies across PS5 emulators and games.

That gap matters because emulation is not simply a matter of having a fast gaming PC. The emulator must reproduce console behavior in software, and its support for a particular game depends on the emulator’s implementation as well as the host computer. A faster component cannot supply an emulator feature that has not been implemented. Conversely, a project describing a graphics API or an engineering technique is not publishing a guaranteed hardware tier.

For a broad shopping description, “Vulkan-capable gaming PC” is a reasonable category to investigate, but it is not a verified minimum and says nothing by itself about whether a specific game will work. Treat any exact parts list or universal performance promise as unsupported unless it is tied to the particular emulator, build, game, and test conditions.

What the host PC needs to do
Run the selected emulator build
The projects do not all target the same operating systems or graphics interfaces. For example, shadPS5 describes itself as an emulator in development for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its project description says it uses a Vulkan renderer, with MoltenVK on macOS. Those details apply to shadPS5; they are not a universal specification for every PS5 emulation project.
Check the current documentation and release notes for the emulator you intend to use before installing it or changing systems. Confirm that your operating system is supported by that build and that your graphics setup meets its stated requirements. A project may change its requirements as it develops, so an old guide or a report about a different build may no longer describe the software you are installing.
Translate console work into PC work
shadPS5 explains that it translates console CPU instructions into host-native code and maps GPU commands to Vulkan. This is an account of how that project approaches emulation, not a minimum CPU or graphics-card recommendation. Likewise, development work on shader translation and Vulkan support in SharpEmu indicates that graphics translation is an active area of development; it does not establish how fast a given Vulkan-capable PC will run a given game.

In practical terms, a compatible graphics API is only one requirement. It does not prove that every graphics feature a game needs has been implemented, that the emulator handles the game’s CPU behavior, or that the title can be played to completion. Do not treat “supports Vulkan” as shorthand for “supports PS5 games generally.”
Compatibility labels matter more than a broad hardware claim
Look up the exact game in the emulator’s own compatibility information, then read what its status actually means. A title that boots may stop at a warning or crash soon afterward. Reaching a main menu is not the same as rendering gameplay correctly, and seeing some gameplay is not the same as completing the game without disruptive faults.
shadPS5 says its compatibility list is small and tracks different stages, including whether a title boots, reaches the main menu, renders, or is actually playable. Its project description puts the work in progress plainly: “The list is small right now but grows with every HLE stub and GPU fix we land.” The important point for a buyer is that a boot video or a successful menu screenshot does not establish normal playability.

A dated example illustrates why labels need context. Tom’s Hardware reported on September 27, 2026 that 12 of 55 titles tested with SharpEmu had reached a “game-ready” state, and that six were designated playable at 60 FPS. The report said those six had not yet been tested from start to finish; it also noted that the playable designation could still allow minor graphics or audio issues. These are SharpEmu figures from that report and test set—not a benchmark for other emulators, a guarantee for a particular computer, or a prediction for every game.
How to evaluate a compatibility entry
- Match the game exactly. Check the title and any version or update notes shown by the project; do not assume one entry covers every release or configuration.
- Read the status definition. Identify whether the game only boots, reaches a menu, renders, or is considered playable. Look for stated caveats such as crashes, missing effects, or sound problems.
- Check the build and date. Compatibility can change as emulator code changes. A result for one dated build does not prove the same result for a later or earlier build.
- Look for the scope of testing. “Playable” may not mean tested from beginning to end or free of faults. Note whether a report gives those details.
- Separate performance from compatibility. A reported frame rate for selected titles is not a universal target for other games, systems, or builds.
Compare projects by what they actually support
There is no single project description or compatibility figure that answers every reader’s question. Compare the exact game status, supported platform and graphics interface, date of the evidence, nature of the project, and what files it supplies. The examples below have different scopes and should not be read as interchangeable versions of one benchmark.
| Project or example | What the cited information establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| shadPS5 | In-development PS5 emulator targeting Windows, Linux, and macOS; its project page describes a Vulkan renderer, with MoltenVK on macOS, and a small compatibility list. | A general minimum PC specification, broad game compatibility, or a guaranteed performance level. |
| SharpEmu | A Tom’s Hardware report dated September 27, 2026 described 12 of 55 tested titles as game-ready and six as playable at 60 FPS, with the stated testing and quality caveats. | A result for every game, a full-playthrough guarantee for those six titles, or a result transferable to another PC or emulator. |
| AnyPS5 | Tom’s Hardware reported that its 100% figure referred to decoder recognition of 1,166 tracked AMD RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 shader instructions. | 100% game compatibility, complete shader behavior, full GPU-feature support, or successful rendering of all PS5 games. |
| shadPS4 | Its official guide lists requirements for that PS4 emulator, including 4 CPU cores and 6 threads, a frequency above 2.5 GHz, x86-64-v3, 2 GB VRAM, Vulkan 1.3, and 8 GB RAM. | PS5 emulator requirements. These figures are specific to a PS4 project and cannot be used as a PS5 parts list. |
Do not mistake PS4 requirements for PS5 requirements
Searches for PlayStation emulation often surface shadPS4, but it is explicitly a PS4 emulator. Its quick-start guide specifies at least 4 CPU cores and 6 threads, a frequency above 2.5 GHz, x86-64-v3 support, a GPU with 2 GB of VRAM and Vulkan 1.3 plus named extensions, 8 GB of RAM, and minimum operating-system versions. Those numbers answer a question about shadPS4 only. They are not a baseline, estimate, or safe proxy for running a PS5 emulator.

This distinction is easy to miss because both kinds of project concern PlayStation software and may mention similar technologies. But hardware requirements are set by a particular program and its implementation. Copying a PS4 guide’s figures into a PS5 build list would turn project-specific information into a claim it does not support.

Check the selected project’s own documentation to learn what it provides and what files it expects. Projects differ. PS5PCEM says it does not ship games, console firmware, system libraries, keys, or vendor-copyrighted material, and describes its purpose as interoperability research and education. That statement is specific to PS5PCEM; do not assume that every project has the same scope or file policy.

The shadPS4 guide has its own PS4-specific directions: it says game, update, and DLC content is copyrighted and must be dumped from the user’s own copy, and it describes loading firmware modules for PS4 compatibility. Those directions belong to shadPS4. They are not universal PS5 instructions and should not be repurposed as such.
Emulation, native porting, and technical percentages
Not every project described in coverage of PS5 software uses conventional emulation. AnyPS5 is described as native porting through binary transformation and API reimplementation. That is a different approach from presenting it as a conventional PS5 emulator, so a reader comparing projects should first establish what each one is trying to do.
The meaning of a technical progress figure also depends on what was counted. Tom’s Hardware reported that AnyPS5’s “100%” figure referred to decoder recognition of 1,166 tracked AMD RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 shader instructions. That measures instruction-decoder coverage in the tracked set. It does not mean every shader behavior or graphics feature is supported, or that PS5 games generally work. A percentage about one layer of an implementation must not be rewritten as a percentage of games that run.

- Choose the exact project. Confirm whether it is a PS5 emulator, a PS4 emulator, or a different approach such as native porting. Do not substitute one project’s requirements for another’s.
- Find the current official documentation. Verify the build’s supported operating systems, graphics API, installation requirements, and any required files. Use the selected project’s current instructions rather than relying on a specification copied from a different project.
- Check your PC against those stated requirements. Confirm the operating system and graphics support first. If no CPU, GPU, or memory minimum is published, treat it as unknown; do not fill the gap with a PS4 specification or a generic gaming-PC label.
- Check the exact game’s compatibility entry. Record the status, build or date, and any known issues. A title with no meaningful compatibility evidence is an experiment, not a promised use case.
- Decide whether an upgrade has an evidence-based purpose. An upgrade may help only if it addresses a requirement or bottleneck established for that build and game. More powerful hardware cannot create missing emulator support, so do not buy parts on the assumption that extra performance alone will make an unsupported title playable.
- Follow the project’s file and legal guidance. Confirm which materials the project supplies, what it expects from the user, and what rules apply where you live. Do not infer a universal answer from another project’s policy.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The useful answer to “What PC specs do I need for a PS5 emulator?” is currently project-specific, not a fixed CPU-and-GPU shopping list. The information described here establishes that PS5 emulation remains experimental, that graphics and operating-system support vary by project, and that compatibility reports are limited to particular games, builds, and test sets. No independent benchmark or validated minimum/recommended PS5 emulator PC specification is established by these sources.
Use a Vulkan-capable gaming PC only as a broad hardware category to investigate when it fits the selected project’s documentation. Make the compatibility entry—not a generic spec sheet, an isolated boot video, or a percentage about instruction decoding—the deciding evidence for the game you want to run.
