What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To use keyboard shortcuts on an Android tablet, first connect a physical keyboard, then open the tablet’s own shortcut list: Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard > Keyboard shortcuts. That on-device list is the authority for your Android version, tablet model and connected keyboard; Android does not expose one guaranteed shortcut catalog that works identically everywhere.
This guide covers Bluetooth and USB keyboards, layout and modifier settings, Gboard’s separate on-screen gestures, Android version limits, accessibility features and fixes for missing or unreliable shortcuts. Google’s clearest documented path is for Android tablets, so phone menus and manufacturer software may differ.

What Android keyboard shortcuts actually cover
There are two different keyboard experiences on Android:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Physical-keyboard shortcuts: combinations and controls available when a Bluetooth or USB keyboard is attached. Android lists these under the connected keyboard’s Physical keyboard settings.
- Gboard features: typing options and gestures for the on-screen keyboard. Gboard’s controls are separate from the physical-keyboard shortcut list.
A tablet can support shortcuts that a phone does not show, and an app can add its own commands. Android release, tablet manufacturer, keyboard layout and the foreground app all affect what you see. Do not treat a shortcut remembered from a desktop, another tablet or an online list as guaranteed until it appears in your tablet’s own Keyboard shortcuts screen.

Check the requirements before connecting
You need an Android tablet, a compatible physical keyboard and a way to connect them. A Bluetooth keyboard needs charged batteries and pairing mode. A wired keyboard needs a cable and ports that the tablet and keyboard support; Google documents USB connection as an option but does not publish model-by-model compatibility details.
- Check the tablet’s Android version in Settings > About tablet (the exact label can vary).
- Have the keyboard’s pairing instructions nearby. The key or switch used to enter pairing mode is manufacturer-specific.
- If you use a non-US layout, identify its language and physical arrangement before choosing a layout in Android.
- Remember that a physical keyboard is optional. Ordinary text entry still works with the on-screen keyboard.
Some tablet keyboard steps documented by Google require Android 14 or later. If a menu in this guide is missing, first verify the Android version and then look for an equivalent setting under your manufacturer’s keyboard or connected-device menus.
Pair a Bluetooth keyboard
- Put the keyboard into pairing mode by following the keyboard manufacturer’s instructions. A blinking status light commonly indicates pairing mode, but the indicator differs by model.
- On the tablet, open Settings.
- Tap Connected devices > Pair new device.
- Wait for the keyboard to appear under available devices, then tap its name.
- Complete any pairing prompt. If Android displays a number to type, enter that number on the physical keyboard and press Enter.
After pairing, leave the keyboard switched on and within Bluetooth range. Android normally reconnects to a previously paired keyboard when both devices are available. If it does not, return to Settings > Connected devices, select the keyboard and use the connect option shown there.

Connect a keyboard by USB
For a wired setup, connect the keyboard to the tablet with a compatible cable or adapter. Android may recognize it immediately; no Bluetooth pairing step is required. Because connector standards and power requirements vary, consult the tablet and keyboard documentation if nothing appears. A USB keyboard can draw power from the tablet, so a low battery or an underpowered adapter can prevent detection even when the keyboard works on another device.

Open the physical-keyboard settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
- Select the connected keyboard from the list.
- Choose the layout that matches the keys you are using.
- Tap Keyboard shortcuts to view the shortcuts supported on that tablet.
The connected-keyboard page can also contain a switch to keep the on-screen keyboard visible and controls for modifier-key behavior. Labels and availability depend on the Android release and device software, so your screen may not match another tablet exactly.
Choose the correct layout
Layout selection changes how Android interprets keys; it does not physically change the printed legends. If symbols appear in the wrong places, reopen the selected keyboard’s settings and choose the matching language and arrangement. For example, a keyboard printed for a different regional arrangement can produce unexpected punctuation when Android is set to another layout.
Keep the on-screen keyboard available
Some tablets hide Gboard as soon as a physical keyboard connects. If you need emoji, handwriting, voice input or an on-screen language switcher, enable the option to keep the on-screen keyboard visible in the physical-keyboard settings. This setting affects whether Gboard remains available; it does not turn physical-keyboard shortcuts into Gboard gestures.

Android may provide a control for changing how modifier keys behave. Use it when the keyboard’s Ctrl, Alt, Command-like or Action key does not match the behavior you expect. Find the shortcuts your tablet supports
Open Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard, select the connected keyboard and tap Keyboard shortcuts. Read this list whenever you change keyboards, layouts or Android versions. It is the most reliable way to learn the combinations implemented by your tablet.
The list can include system navigation, text editing or other actions, and an app may add commands when it is in the foreground. Android’s tablet help does not promise one complete catalog for every model, so the absence of a command in your list matters: it means that combination is not documented as available on that device in its current configuration.
Use the list as a test, not a suggestion
- Open the shortcut list before starting a task that depends on a specific combination.
- Find the action by name and note every modifier shown, including the order if Android displays one.
- Return to the app where you want to use it and press the keys exactly as listed.
- If nothing happens, check whether the app supports the action and whether a text field, dialog or other control has focus.
- Recheck the list after an Android update or after switching keyboard layouts.
There is no evidence that a familiar desktop combination works system-wide on every Android tablet or phone. Treat combinations such as copy, paste, switching apps or opening search as examples only when your own shortcut list displays them.

The keyboard is US QWERTY layout, easy to use, has hot keys, such as volume control, play and pause, previous and next etc. The front is brushed, the back is ultra-thin and smooth aluminum alloy design.
Check which app owns the command
A shortcut can be system-level, app-level or unavailable in a particular context. If the tablet’s list shows a command but an app ignores it, test the same command in another text field or system screen. An app can intercept a key combination, reserve it for another action or simply not implement it.
Press modifiers as shown
Hold or release modifier keys according to the on-device instructions. If the modifier setting has been changed, the key labeled Alt, Ctrl or another modifier may produce a different result. A keyboard with a regional layout can also place symbols on different keycaps, so verify the selected layout before diagnosing a shortcut.
Use a repeatable work pattern
- Connect the keyboard before opening the app in which you plan to work.
- Confirm the active layout in physical-keyboard settings.
- Check the shortcut list for the exact action you need.
- Test once in a disposable text field or document.
- Only then use the command in important work.
Understand Gboard separately
Gboard is Android’s on-screen keyboard. Its settings control languages, typing behavior and on-screen actions; they are not a universal physical-keyboard shortcut catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGoogle documents gestures such as swiping across the space bar to move the cursor and double-tapping Shift to turn on caps lock. Those gestures apply to Gboard’s touch interface. A connected physical keyboard may continue to work while Gboard is hidden, but the gesture itself is not a physical-keyboard shortcut.

When to keep Gboard visible
Keep the on-screen keyboard visible when you regularly need features that are easier to access on screen, such as emoji, voice input, handwriting or a touch-based language switch. Hide it when you want the largest possible work area and use the physical keyboard for all input. The visibility choice is in the connected keyboard’s physical-keyboard settings when the tablet offers it.
Change Gboard options
Open Gboard’s settings from the on-screen keyboard or from the tablet’s keyboard settings. Language layouts and typing preferences changed there affect Gboard. They do not replace the layout selection and shortcut list for a connected physical keyboard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accessibility features on Android 16 and later
Google documents physical-keyboard accessibility options—Sticky Keys, Slow Keys and Mouse Keys—as available only on Android 16.0 and up. If your tablet runs an earlier release, these controls may not exist even if the keyboard itself works.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Physical keyboard accessibility.
- Turn on the accessibility feature you need.
- Read the confirmation or help text supplied by your tablet before relying on the new behavior.
How Sticky Keys works
Sticky Keys lets you press and release a modifier such as Shift, Ctrl, Alt or Action, then press the next key, instead of holding both keys at the same time. Google documents the activation sequence Action + Alt + 5 after Sticky Keys is enabled. The exact Action key label and available controls can vary, so verify the setting on your tablet first.
When accessibility settings are missing
Confirm that the tablet is running Android 16.0 or later and that a physical keyboard is connected. If both conditions are met but the menu is still absent, the manufacturer may have moved or renamed it. Search Settings for physical keyboard and check the tablet maker’s documentation rather than assuming the feature is supported.
Troubleshoot connection and shortcut problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The keyboard never appears in Pair new device | It is not in pairing mode, is already connected elsewhere or has insufficient power. | Charge or replace batteries, disconnect it from another device, re-enter pairing mode and repeat Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device. |
| The keyboard pairs but types nothing | The connection is stale, the keyboard is switched off or the USB adapter is incompatible. | Toggle the keyboard off and on, select it under connected devices and reconnect. For USB, try a documented compatible cable or adapter. |
| Symbols or punctuation are wrong | The Android layout does not match the keyboard’s physical layout. | Open Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard, select the keyboard and choose the matching layout. |
| The shortcut list is missing | No physical keyboard is connected, the menu differs on that release or the device does not expose the feature. | Confirm the connection, reopen the physical-keyboard page and check the Android version. Manufacturer software may use a different path. |
| A listed shortcut does nothing in one app | The app does not implement the action, has focus elsewhere or intercepts the combination. | Place the cursor in the intended control, test the command in another app and consult that app’s own help if it remains unavailable. |
| Gboard disappears after connecting | The tablet hides the on-screen keyboard for physical input. | Enable the option to keep the on-screen keyboard visible in physical-keyboard settings, if your tablet provides it. |
| Sticky Keys cannot be found | The tablet is below Android 16.0 or the manufacturer uses another menu. | Check the Android version, search Settings for physical keyboard accessibility and do not rely on Sticky Keys unless the control is present and enabled. |
Know the Android and manufacturer limits
Google’s published tablet instructions are not proof that every Android phone exposes the same menus or combinations. Phone manufacturers can change Settings paths, omit physical-keyboard pages or add their own behavior. Even among tablets, Android version and vendor software can change the labels.
Android 14 and later is required for some steps in Google’s tablet guidance. Physical-keyboard accessibility features are documented for Android 16.0 and later. These are version boundaries for the documented features, not a promise that every Android 14 tablet has every shortcut or that every Android 16 device presents identical controls.
For a manufacturer-specific answer, identify the exact tablet model and Android version first. Then use that device’s own shortcut list and support documentation. Avoid relying on a universal shortcut chart unless it was written for the same release and hardware.
Quick Recap
A practical setup checklist
- Confirm that a physical keyboard is appropriate for your task; it is optional for normal on-screen typing.
- Put a Bluetooth keyboard in pairing mode, or connect a compatible USB keyboard.
- Pair through Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device when using Bluetooth.
- Open Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
- Select the connected keyboard and set its matching layout.
- Decide whether the on-screen keyboard should remain visible.
- Review Keyboard shortcuts and record only the commands your tablet actually lists.
- Test each important command in the app and control where you will use it.
- If you need Sticky Keys, Slow Keys or Mouse Keys, verify Android 16.0 or later and open Settings > Accessibility > Physical keyboard accessibility.
- After an Android update, a layout change or a new keyboard connection, revisit the shortcut list instead of assuming the previous behavior remains unchanged.
