The Mac mini’s power cable is included; a display cable or adapter is only an extra purchase if the cable you have does not fit both the display and the Mac.
What to buy for a basic Mac mini setup
Apple’s Mac mini setup guide has you connect a display and a keyboard and mouse or trackpad before following Setup Assistant. Buy only the items you do not already own:

- Mac mini: Choose the computer first. Its generation determines which ports and display configurations are supported.
- Display: A monitor is a common choice, but an HDMI-equipped TV or projector can also work as an external display. The display needs its own power if it is not self-powered.
- Keyboard and mouse or trackpad: You can use wired or Bluetooth peripherals. For wired devices, check that their cables connect to the Mac mini’s available ports; for wireless devices, check their pairing method and whether batteries or charging cables are included.
- Display cable or adapter, if needed: Check the ports on both the Mac mini and display, and whether the display includes a suitable cable, before buying anything extra.
You do not need to buy a separate power cable for the Mac mini. Apple says to use the cable included with it. Apple’s 2024 M4 and M4 Pro specifications list a 1.8 m power lead in the box.

Check the display connection before buying a cable
Apple’s setup guide recommends using the cable supplied with the display if it connects to the Mac mini. If the connectors do not match, a different cable may be enough; otherwise, you may need an adapter. Apple lists examples including HDMI and USB-C cables, USB-C-to-DisplayPort, USB-C VGA and USB-C-to-DVI adapters, and a Thunderbolt 3-to-Thunderbolt 2 adapter for an older display.

Do not choose an adapter just because its connector names match. If resolution or refresh rate matters, confirm that the specific Mac mini, display and connection support the mode you want. Apple’s display-connection guide and the specifications for your exact Mac mini model provide the relevant compatibility details.
Make sure your Mac mini can drive the display setup you want
Ports and display limits vary by generation. Apple’s current guide covers M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini; its specifications distinguish the models and their supported display configurations. On those models, use the rear HDMI or Thunderbolt ports for video: the two front USB 3 ports do not carry video. Each model can support up to three external displays, but supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations depend on the model and the number of displays connected.

The 2024 M4 and M4 Pro have HDMI and three rear Thunderbolt ports. Apple specifies Thunderbolt 4 for M4 and Thunderbolt 5 for M4 Pro, and their display configurations are not identical to those in the current M6/M5 Pro guide. Check the documentation for the generation you own or plan to buy rather than assuming that a port, cable or display limit carries over between models.
Set it up after you have the essentials
- Place the Mac mini on a hard, stable surface with room for air circulation.
- Connect the included power cable to the Mac mini and a power outlet.
- Connect the display to a video-capable port and connect it to power if required.
- Connect or pair the keyboard and mouse or trackpad.
- Press the power button on the bottom of the Mac mini, then follow Setup Assistant. Apple says it can guide you through Wi-Fi, data transfer, accessibility options and account creation.
Setup Assistant also offers Ethernet in its network options. Whether you need a router or network service depends on your circumstances; Apple’s setup instructions do not make either a universal Mac mini accessory purchase.

Quick pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the Mac mini generation and check its available video ports.
- Confirm the display’s inputs, resolution and refresh rate, especially for a multi-display setup.
- Check whether the display package includes a cable that fits both devices.
- Check how your keyboard and pointing device connect, and what accessories they include.
- Reuse compatible equipment you already own; buy a cable or adapter only if the existing connection will not work.
