You can build a Raspberry Pi console that reads some original game discs, but a disc drive alone will not make every console game playable. The clearest documented starting point is a Raspberry Pi 4 running 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS, paired with an internal SATA DVD drive and an externally powered SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure. Whether a particular disc works depends on the emulator and platform you want to run.
What this build can—and cannot—do
This is a Raspberry Pi computer configured to let compatible emulators read original CDs or DVDs. It is not a universal replacement for every disc-based console, and adding an optical drive does not guarantee that a game will launch. Its example used a 2008 Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7203S SATA DVD-RW drive; that is a documented example, not a required or current buying recommendation. The guide focuses on emulators that can read discs and use a High Level Emulation (HLE) BIOS, so compatibility depends on the emulator’s specific capabilities and configuration. Choose the drive connection carefully
For the documented internal-drive approach, connect the SATA DVD drive with an externally powered SATA-to-USB adapter or an enclosure that provides external power. The project guide warns that some modern portable USB optical drives draw more power than the Pi readily supplies and may not work reliably with hubs or external 5 V adapters. That is a caution about power and particular setups, not proof that every USB optical drive is incompatible.
When comparing options, check the drive interface, how the drive receives power, and whether your intended emulator can read the game directly. A Blu-ray drive is not automatically a better choice: the cited project guide notes that spin and spin-down behavior can be a poor match for some emulated consoles. Set up the Pi and test compatibility
- Install the operating system. Prepare a microSD card with a fresh 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS installation, following the official Raspberry Pi getting-started guidance. The documented disc project names this OS and the Raspberry Pi 4 as its baseline.
- Connect the essentials. Attach the display by micro-HDMI, connect a controller by USB, and use an appropriate Pi power supply. Connect the SATA drive through its externally powered adapter or enclosure.
- Select the emulator for the target system. Confirm that it supports the console or computer platform you want to emulate and can read original discs directly. Do not infer compatibility from the presence of the drive or from a generic retro-gaming setup.
- Test one disc before building around a collection. Check that the operating system detects and mounts the drive, then test the title with the chosen emulator. Some emulators may also require BIOS files; the project guide limits its recommendations to emulators able to use an HLE BIOS, rather than promising that every game will work without additional requirements. The project guide gives UK-specific advice: it says UK law does not permit copying purchased software, video, or music discs for backup or transcoding, and that console-game EULAs do not grant personal-copy permission. It also cautions against downloading disc images made by someone else or console BIOS files.
