Lanterns is part of DC Studios’ connected DCU, but that does not mean you need to watch every DC show or film before it. Its clearest confirmed screen connection is Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, who was introduced in Superman and appears in Lanterns.
Where Lanterns sits in the DCU
DC Studios has described its projects as sharing continuity and characters, while allowing individual stories to stay focused. In a 2023 interview, co-chairman and co-CEO James Gunn said that projects from the studio’s first project forward would be canon and connected, and that characters would interact across stories. Those comments establish the framework; they do not promise a crossover in every series or season. DC.com’s interview with Gunn and Peter Safran

Within that framework, Lanterns follows Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), intergalactic cops pulled into an Earth-based murder investigation in the American heartland. The clearest link to another DCU project: Guy Gardner
DC.com says Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner in a guest appearance in Lanterns, and identifies Superman as the project where audiences met the character. That makes Guy the most specific confirmed bridge between the two screen stories in the official sources cited here. DC.com’s Lanterns overview

This connection does not establish that Lanterns is a sequel to Superman, or that its central mystery depends on the events of that film. Watching Superman can provide context for Guy Gardner, but the available official descriptions do not say it is required viewing.
How the Earthbound mystery connects to Green Lantern lore
The series is framed as a grounded investigation on Earth, but its mythology reaches beyond the planet. DC.com’s discussion of the teasers and trailer points to Ch’p and the Manhunters, describing the Manhunters as an extraterrestrial threat operating on Earth. That suggests a bridge between the detective story and the wider cosmic side of Green Lantern; it is not, by itself, confirmation of a particular crossover or a detailed account of the plot. Do you need to watch other DC shows first?
No viewing order is established as essential. If you want the most direct context for the named returning character, watch Superman for Guy Gardner. Otherwise, the available series description sets up Hal, John and their investigation without requiring knowledge of another show. The broader DCU connection is continuity, not a checklist of prerequisite episodes.

Are the Green Lantern comics required background?
No. DC.com recommends a few comics as optional ways to approach the characters, not as required source material for understanding the series:
