It also had a headphone jack the flagship lacked. This is a historical comparison of the 2019 Pixel 3a and Pixel 3—not a claim about every flagship phone, or a recommendation based on today’s used-phone prices.
What the Pixel 3a kept
Google’s specifications give the Pixel 3a a 12.2-megapixel dual-pixel rear camera with optical and electronic image stabilization, a 5.6-inch OLED display, 4GB of RAM, a Titan M security module, and a Snapdragon 670 processor. It launched with Android 9. The Pixel 3a XL shared the listed core camera and processor specifications, with a larger 6-inch screen. Google’s Pixel hardware specifications list these features.

Google also promoted HDR+, Portrait Mode, Super Res Zoom, and Night Sight for the 3a. The overlap with Pixel 3 camera features was substantial, but shared features do not establish identical image output, processing speed, or results in every situation. Google’s May 2019 launch announcement describes the camera features.
What the Pixel 3 added
The Pixel 3 was the closest direct flagship comparison in Google’s specifications. Its Snapdragon 845 and Pixel Visual Core were stronger camera and processing hardware than the 3a’s Snapdragon 670, though the specifications alone do not quantify a real-world speed difference. Google listed HDR display support, Qi wireless charging, IP68 water protection, and a choice of 64GB or 128GB storage for the Pixel 3. The 3a’s listed storage was 64GB, and its display specifications do not list HDR support. Google measures storage before formatting, so usable space is lower than the advertised capacity. Google’s specifications document the differences.

Is the Pixel 3a camera as good as the Pixel 3?
The rear-camera specifications and Google’s advertised camera modes show why the 3a appealed to buyers who wanted the Pixel camera experience for less. But the Pixel 3 also had Pixel Visual Core, while the 3a used a Snapdragon 670, and there is no comparative test here to establish matching image quality or capture speed. The clearest documented camera flexibility gap is on the front: the 3a had one 8MP selfie camera, while the Pixel 3 had two 8MP front cameras. That second camera gave the Pixel 3 additional selfie-camera flexibility; it should not be taken as proof that every selfie from the 3a was worse.
What do you give up in daily use?
Charging convenience
The Pixel 3 supported Qi wireless charging; the Pixel 3a did not. The 3a charged through USB-C. Google included an 18-watt charger and estimated up to seven hours of battery life after a 15-minute charge and up to 30 hours on a full charge. Those are Google’s mixed-use estimates from 2019, not independent measurements; Google cautioned that active display or data use reduces runtime. They are not a promise for a used phone with an aged battery. Google’s launch announcement gives the estimates and caveat.
Water protection
Google listed IP68 water protection for the Pixel 3, but no equivalent rating for the 3a. Even for the Pixel 3, IP68 is not a guarantee against water damage: Google says water resistance can be compromised by normal wear, repair, disassembly, or damage. The rating was tested under IEC standard 60529. Google’s specifications and water-resistance warning explain the qualification.

Headphones and construction
The 3a’s polycarbonate unibody and 3.5mm headphone jack were practical counterpoints to the Pixel 3’s glass construction. If you use wired headphones, the jack means no USB-C adapter is needed. A May 2019 TIME review also reported that Pixel 3 cases did not fit the slightly taller Pixel 3a body; that is a contemporary observation, not a compatibility test covering every third-party case. What did the Pixel 3a cost at launch?
In the United States, Google announced the 5.6-inch Pixel 3a at $399 and the 6-inch Pixel 3a XL at $479 in 2019. These are historical launch prices, not current used-market values. At launch, Google promised three years of operating-system and security updates for the Pixel 3a. Google’s current earlier-model specifications page retains that original commitment, but it does not establish an active update commitment in 2026 or verify the security patch on a particular handset. Treat the 3a as an older phone, and check the device’s installed software and security patch before relying on it. Google’s 2019 announcement states the commitment; the specifications page retains the historical update note.

Is a used Pixel 3a still the right choice?
The original trade-off made sense for a buyer prioritizing Google’s computational photography features and OLED display at a lower 2019 entry price, while accepting weaker hardware and fewer premium conveniences. For a used purchase now, the model’s age and the condition of the specific device matter more than its original price. Before buying, verify:

- Battery condition and whether it holds a useful charge.
- Carrier compatibility for your region and intended network.
- The seller’s return policy and the phone’s physical condition.
- The installed operating-system version and security patch date.
Those checks are especially important because current used prices, carrier support by market, seller reliability, and the final update delivered to an individual handset are not established by the original product specifications.
