It does not define a universal video catalog, require a search function, or guarantee access to playable video. What you can find depends on the archive’s server, its data and indexing, and the authorization and client behavior involved.
What MCP provides—and what it leaves to the archive
The MCP base specification dated 2026-07-28 defines protocol building blocks, not a standard video-archive schema. Implementations can choose which components to support and what information or operations to expose. An archive integration might make descriptive records available; another might offer only a limited set of capabilities.

Three primitives help explain the difference:
- Resources expose data identified by a URI. A client may be able to list and read them if the server supports resources and the request is authorized.
- Tools are callable functions. Their names, descriptions, and input schemas advertise operations the server offers, which could include search or retrieval.
- Prompts provide predefined templates or instructions. They do not, by themselves, create an archive search function.
These are distinct protocol components, not promises that a server will provide any particular archive feature. The 2026-07-28 tools specification describes how tools are exposed and invoked; the project’s resources specification is currently a draft.

If the server makes descriptive records available, you may be able to retrieve the fields it exposes. Depending on that implementation, those could include information such as a title or date, but MCP does not prescribe those fields. If the server advertises a search tool, its schema and description can show which inputs or filters it accepts. The tool’s underlying implementation determines what those inputs actually search.

A natural-language request such as “find the interview filmed at the harbor” only works as expected if the server has relevant indexed information and provides an operation capable of searching it. MCP carries the request and the server’s response; it cannot make missing, incomplete, or unindexed metadata discoverable.
Likewise, a resource URI or a result linking to a resource does not establish that the client can stream or render the underlying media. The tools specification describes supported result content such as text, structured content, images, audio, and resource links. That protocol support does not prove a specific archive server provides video, transcripts, thumbnails, time-coded clips, or playback.

What changes the answer
The server’s implementation
The archive server chooses which records and operations it maps to MCP. Its documentation or interface—not the protocol name alone—must establish whether it offers catalog lookup, full-text search, filters, transcript search, clip retrieval, previews, or playback.
Metadata and indexing
Search quality is bounded by the information the archive has made available and indexed. A search operation cannot reliably find a scene by description if the relevant description is absent from searchable data. The exact fields, coverage, and search behavior are implementation-specific.

Tool schemas and search design
Tool names, descriptions, and input schemas tell a client what operations and parameters the server advertises. They do not independently establish how comprehensive or effective a search is. Check the server’s documentation for what each parameter matches and whether results refer to whole recordings, segments, or both.
Authorization
Available resources and tools can vary with the authorization presented for a request. Two users may therefore see different records or operations even when connecting to the same server.

The client application
Resources are application-driven, while tools may be discovered and invoked by a model. The host application determines how it presents resource data and tool results, and how it requests user input or confirmation. A capability advertised by the server may not appear in a given client’s interface in the same way.

Not necessarily. The protocol’s described content types and resource links do not guarantee that a particular integration exposes video files or playable streams. Nor do they establish transcript availability, thumbnails, timestamps, or clip-level retrieval. Treat these as separate capabilities to verify in the archive server’s own documentation or interface; access to metadata alone is not evidence of media access.

How to assess a specific integration
Before relying on MCP to answer questions about an archive, check the integration itself rather than assuming features from the protocol:
- Inspect the advertised resources and tools. Confirm whether the server exposes archive records and whether it has a search or retrieval tool; note the tool’s actual input schema.
- Verify searchable information. Look for documented fields, filters, transcript coverage, and whether search operates on recordings, segments, or both.
- Separate finding from viewing. Confirm independently whether results include media access, previews, transcripts, or time-coded clips, and whether the client can render them.
- Check permissions. Establish which authorization scopes or credentials control access to records and operations.
- Review user controls. Check what the client displays when tools are available or invoked and whether it asks for confirmation before an operation.
Tool calls, trust, and user control
The MCP tools specification dated 2026-07-28 says: “For trust & safety and security, there SHOULD always be a human in the loop with the ability to deny tool invocations.” It also recommends that applications show users which tools are exposed, indicate when tools are invoked, and provide confirmation prompts for operations. These are specification guidance, not proof that every client implements those controls.
The base specification also says server identity fields are self-reported and should not be relied on for security decisions. A displayed server name alone does not establish that a connection or tool is trustworthy.
