Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) lets you use a Linux development environment on a Windows PC without giving up Windows applications. You can run a Linux filesystem, Bash and other command-line tools, Linux packages, services, and supported graphical Linux applications beside your normal Windows desktop. A Windows editor can provide the interface while your code, Git operations, dependencies, and extensions run inside Linux.
That combination is useful when a project targets Linux servers, depends on Linux-first tooling, or behaves differently under Windows. WSL is primarily an inner-loop development environment, however—not an automatic substitute for a production Linux host. The right setup depends on where your tools run, where your files live, and how closely you need to match deployment.

What WSL is and why developers use it
Microsoft defines WSL as “a feature of the Windows operating system that enables you to run a Linux file system, along with Linux command-line tools and GUI apps, directly on Windows, alongside your traditional Windows desktop and apps.” In practical terms, WSL adds a Linux distribution to Windows and gives you a shell in which Linux tools behave as Linux tools, while Windows remains available for your browser, office software, native editors, and other desktop programs.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThis avoids several common compromises. A developer does not have to dual-boot, maintain a separate computer, or force a Linux-oriented build system to operate through Windows compatibility layers. At the same time, WSL does not isolate you from Windows: Linux processes can call Windows executables, Windows applications can access files in the Linux environment, and network connections can cross the boundary.

Who benefits most
- Developers who prefer Bash and utilities such as
grep, sed, andawk. - Teams whose dependencies, scripts, language runtimes, or web stacks are documented primarily for Linux.
- People building software that will run on Linux servers and who want a closer local command-line environment.
- Open-source contributors whose build and test instructions assume a Linux filesystem and package manager.
- Windows users who need Linux GUI applications or GPU-enabled workloads, including some machine-learning workflows, when their hardware and software meet the current prerequisites.
WSL is less compelling when every tool you use is already a native Windows application, or when you need a long-running, production-like Linux host with fixed networking and services that remain available independently of Windows activity.
WSL 1 and WSL 2: the practical difference
A distribution can run as WSL 1 or WSL 2, and both types can coexist on the same Windows installation. WSL 1 translates Linux system calls through a compatibility layer. WSL 2 uses a real Linux kernel inside a lightweight utility virtual machine managed by Windows. Microsoft identifies WSL 2 as the default distribution type in its overview.
| Area | WSL 1 | WSL 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Linux kernel | Compatibility layer rather than a virtualized Linux kernel | Linux kernel in a lightweight utility VM |
| System-call compatibility | More limited than WSL 2 | Fuller system-call compatibility |
| Filesystem performance | Can be advantageous for some operations on Windows-mounted files | Improved performance for work kept in the Linux filesystem |
| Networking model | Different from WSL 2’s virtualized networking | Virtualized networking; the distribution commonly has a separate IP address from Windows |
| Coexistence | Can coexist with WSL 2 distributions | Can coexist with WSL 1 distributions |
WSL 2 is not universally “better” for every workload. Its kernel and system-call compatibility make it the usual choice for Linux-oriented software, while its virtualized networking and filesystem behavior can affect workflows that were designed around WSL 1. You can set an individual distribution to the version that fits its compatibility and file-access needs instead of treating the choice as permanent or global.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstalling WSL and a Linux distribution
On supported systems, Microsoft documents wsl --install as the quickest installation route. The command requires Windows 10 version 2004 (Build 19041) or later, or Windows 11. It enables the needed optional components, downloads the current Linux kernel, sets WSL 2 as the default, and installs Ubuntu by default. Windows may require a restart before setup finishes.
- Check the Windows build. Confirm that the computer runs Windows 10 2004/Build 19041 or later, or Windows 11. Installation and servicing behavior can change, so use Microsoft’s current WSL installation instructions for the exact build.
- Open an elevated Windows Terminal or PowerShell window. Run
wsl --install. - Restart if prompted. The restart allows Windows to activate the required virtualization and subsystem components.
- Complete first-launch setup. When the distribution opens, create a Linux username and password. These credentials are for the distribution and are separate from your Windows sign-in.
- Update Linux packages. Use the distribution’s package manager and follow the project’s dependency instructions inside the Linux shell.
- Check the distribution and version. From Windows,
wsl --list --verboseshows installed distributions and whether each uses WSL 1 or WSL 2. Individual distributions can be changed when a workflow requires it.
The core setup needs a Windows computer and software; no special physical product is required. Optional workflows—such as external-drive mounting, containers, databases, GPU acceleration, or Linux GUI applications—have additional, version-specific prerequisites.

How a Windows-and-Linux development workflow fits together
A productive arrangement separates responsibilities without separating the user experience. Windows supplies the desktop, while WSL supplies the Linux toolchain.
1. Keep Linux dependencies in Linux
Install Linux-oriented language runtimes, compilers, package managers, command-line utilities, and services inside the distribution. Run project scripts from the Linux shell so they see the expected paths, permissions, signals, and system calls. This is especially important for projects whose documentation assumes Bash or Linux packages.
2. Store files beside the tools that use them
Microsoft recommends keeping a repository in the Linux filesystem when Linux tools do most of the work, and in the Windows filesystem when Windows tools dominate. Cross-filesystem access works, but it can be significantly slower. The decision is about the tool that performs the frequent file operations, not simply about which application displays the editor window.
- Linux-first project: keep the repository under the distribution’s Linux filesystem and run Git, builds, tests, and package installation there.
- Windows-first project: keep files on a Windows drive when native Windows tools perform the main work.
- Mixed project: identify the highest-volume operations—watchers, compilers, dependency installers, and test runners—and place files on the side that runs them.
Do not assume that moving only the editor will solve a slow build. A Windows editor can be fast while a Linux watcher repeatedly crosses the filesystem boundary.
3. Use a Windows editor with a WSL-connected backend
Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code guidance describes a client/server model. The user interface runs on Windows, while the source tree, Git commands, plugins, language services, and other project operations run in the selected WSL distribution. Install the WSL integration extension in the Windows editor, open the project from the Linux side, and confirm that the status indicator identifies the WSL connection.

Some extensions must be installed separately inside each WSL distribution because they execute with the Linux-side tools rather than in the Windows interface. If a formatter, debugger, language server, or test extension appears installed but cannot find a command, check whether its Linux-side installation is missing.

4. Add optional services only when the project needs them
WSL documentation covers Git workflows, remote development containers, databases, external-drive mounting, GPU acceleration, and Linux GUI applications. These are available patterns rather than requirements. Start with the shell, package manager, repository, and editor integration; add containers, a database, or GPU support when the project actually depends on them.
Interop: where Windows and Linux meet
Interop is one of WSL’s defining advantages. From Windows, you can launch Linux commands through WSL. From Linux, you can invoke Windows executables. Files can be accessed across the boundary, and applications on either side can communicate over network connections.
For example, a Windows editor can open a project whose files live in the Linux filesystem, while a Linux shell runs the project’s tests and Git commands. A Linux script can also call a Windows utility when that is the most practical option. This flexibility is useful, but it means the environment is not identical to a conventional Linux installation: the PATH can include Windows locations, Windows executables are available, and file permissions and process behavior can reflect the integration layer.
Networking and services under WSL 2
Most ordinary development networking works as expected: a web server, API, or database started in WSL can be used from Windows. Under the documented WSL 2 NAT setup, however, the distribution normally has a different IP address from Windows, and that address can change after a restart.

This distinction matters when you expose a service to another device, configure an allowlist, bind to a specific interface, or depend on a stable network topology. A local browser connecting to a development server is a simpler case than a multi-machine test environment. If a service becomes unreachable after restarting WSL, check the current distribution address and the service’s bind address before changing application code.
WSL’s managed utility VM also has a different lifecycle from a permanently running Linux VM or server. Microsoft documents that it starts and stops automatically and can shut down when Windows processes have no open file handles. Long-running daemons should therefore be treated as development conveniences unless you have deliberately designed and tested their startup, persistence, and access behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Linux GUI applications and GPU workloads
WSL can run supported Linux GUI applications alongside Windows applications. It can also provide a WSL-specific GPU path for workloads such as machine learning. These capabilities depend on the Windows version, WSL version, graphics hardware, drivers, and application requirements. Follow the current prerequisites for the particular feature rather than assuming that installing a distribution automatically enables GUI or GPU support.
The same qualification applies to USB devices, external drives, and container workflows. WSL documentation describes ways to use them, but each has setup steps and compatibility boundaries that vary by hardware and software version.
WSL compared with a full virtual machine or a production Linux host
| Consideration | WSL | Full VM | Production Linux host |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows integration | Direct integration with Windows files, commands, applications, and editor interfaces | Usually separated behind a VM boundary, with integration configured separately | Depends on remote-access and deployment tooling |
| Management | Linux distribution and utility VM are managed through Windows | You manage a complete guest operating system and its virtual hardware | Managed as a persistent server or bare-metal system |
| Lifecycle | Can start and stop automatically with Windows activity | Runs according to the VM’s power settings | Normally remains available independently of a developer’s desktop |
| Deployment similarity | Linux user space, but with Windows integration and WSL-specific networking and lifecycle | Can be configured to closely reproduce a target distribution and network | Is the deployment environment when production runs there |
| Best fit | Fast inner-loop development on a Windows workstation | Isolation, custom kernels, or a more complete server-like environment | Staging, production, persistent services, and operational testing |
Use WSL when desktop integration and a Linux toolchain are the priority. Use a full VM when you need stronger isolation or control over the guest system. Test on the actual staging or production platform when behavior depends on persistent services, network topology, boot configuration, hardware access, or operational policies.

Common failure points and fixes
Builds or file watchers are unexpectedly slow
Check whether Linux tools are operating on files stored on a Windows-mounted path, or Windows tools are repeatedly reading files in the Linux filesystem. Move the repository toward the side that performs most operations, then reopen it through the matching toolchain.
An editor extension cannot find a compiler or formatter
Verify that the editor is connected to the intended distribution and that the extension is installed in that distribution’s Linux-side environment. Confirm the command’s location from the WSL shell rather than only from Windows.
A local service works until WSL restarts
Expect WSL 2’s distribution IP to change in the documented NAT configuration. Recheck the address, port binding, and Windows firewall rules. For a service that must remain continuously available, use an environment designed for persistent operation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A project assumes Linux behavior that WSL does not provide
Review scripts for Windows paths on PATH, Windows executable interop, filesystem permission assumptions, and WSL-specific GPU or device access. If the requirement is a production-like kernel, boot process, or network, validate it in a full VM or the actual target host.
A decision checklist
- Does the project use Bash, Linux packages, or a Linux-first framework?
- Will Linux tools perform most reads, writes, builds, tests, or file watching?
- Can the repository live in the Linux filesystem without disrupting Windows-only tools?
- Do you need a Windows editor interface with Linux-side extensions and commands?
- Are GUI, GPU, USB, database, container, or external-drive features genuinely required?
- Does the application require a persistent service, stable IP address, or production-identical host?
If the first four answers are yes and the last requirement is no, WSL is a strong fit: keep Linux work in the Linux filesystem, connect your Windows editor to the distribution, and use Windows applications normally. If persistence, isolation, or deployment fidelity dominates, pair WSL with a suitable VM or remote Linux environment rather than making WSL carry that responsibility.
