If a college student may hurt themselves, treat the situation as urgent: stay with them, involve another trusted person, and in the United States call 911 for imminent danger or a life-threatening emergency. For a suicide, mental-health, or substance-use crisis that is not an immediate medical emergency, call or text 988. In less urgent situations, listen without judgment and help the student connect with campus or community care.
You do not need to diagnose depression or assess suicide risk alone. Your job is to notice concerning changes, ask plainly about suicide, stay present, connect the student with appropriate help, and keep following up.

First decide how urgent the situation is
The right response depends on what the student is saying, doing, and facing right now. A direct question can clarify urgency; asking about suicide does not create suicidal thoughts or make an attempt more likely. NIMH states that studies show asking people whether they are suicidal does not increase suicidal behavior or thoughts.
| Situation | What to do | Primary contact |
|---|---|---|
| The student says they intend to kill themselves, has already harmed themselves, or appears in immediate, life-threatening danger. | Do not leave them alone. Bring in another trusted person and seek emergency help. | Call 911 or go to an emergency department in the United States. |
| The student is in a suicide, mental-health, or substance-use crisis but there is no immediate medical emergency. | Stay with them while you seek crisis guidance and help them take the next safe step. | Call or text 988 in the United States; online chat is available at 988lifeline.org. |
| The student shows new or worsening warning signs but denies immediate danger. | Listen, arrange a connection with professional or campus support, and agree on a follow-up check-in. | Campus counseling, a student-support office, residence-life staff, or a community mental-health professional. |
These services are not interchangeable. 911 is for an imminent danger or medical emergency; 988 is a 24/7 crisis service for people in crisis and for people worried about a loved one; counseling and campus services provide ongoing support. If you are outside the United States, use your country’s local emergency and crisis numbers rather than assuming that 988 applies.

When the answer is unclear
You do not have to make a clinical judgment about whether a situation “counts” as serious enough. Ask calmly what is happening now and whether the student can stay safe. If the student cannot answer, says they are about to act, describes a plan, or has already injured themselves, use the emergency pathway. If there is no immediate danger but the situation is a crisis, use 988. For concerning changes without an immediate crisis, arrange professional or campus support promptly.
Notice changes without trying to diagnose
Depression and suicide risk can look different from one student to another. A sign is a reason to check in, not proof that a student has a diagnosis or intends to die. NIMH advises getting help as soon as possible when warning signs are new or have increased.
What the student may say
- Talking about wanting to die, killing themselves, or not wanting to be here.
- Expressing hopelessness, feeling trapped, unbearable emotional or physical pain, guilt, shame, or being a burden.
- Saying goodbye, withdrawing from people, or giving away important possessions.
- Discussing a suicide plan, researching ways to die, or making preparations.
Changes you may observe
- Extreme sadness, agitation, or sudden and extreme mood swings.
- Major changes in eating or sleeping.
- Dangerous risk-taking or behavior that seems out of character.
- Increased use of alcohol or drugs.
- Pulling away from friends, classes, activities, or ordinary routines.
One behavior by itself cannot tell you whether someone is suicidal. Look for a pattern, a marked change from the student’s usual behavior, or several signs together. When in doubt, ask rather than guessing. A student who appears cheerful one day may still need support; mood can change, and no single visible behavior rules out concern.

Lead with a specific observation
Choose a reasonably private, calm moment and describe what you have noticed without labeling the student. An observation and an invitation are more useful than an accusation:
“I’ve noticed you seem overwhelmed and have been keeping to yourself. I care about you. Do you want to talk?”
Allow pauses. The student may need time to decide whether to speak, and a first conversation may be brief. Your aim is to make it easier to be honest, not to force a confession. If speaking face to face feels impossible, a caring text can open the door: say what you noticed, state that you care, and offer to sit together or make a call. Continue toward a real-time conversation or professional connection when safety is uncertain.
Ask directly about suicide
If suicide is on your mind, use the word. You can say, “Are you thinking about suicide?” or “Have you been thinking about killing yourself?” A direct question is safer than a vague question such as “You’re not going to do anything stupid, are you?” NIMH and SAMHSA both say that asking directly does not put the idea into someone’s head.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAsk a follow-up that clarifies the immediate situation: “Are you in immediate danger right now?” If the student says yes, says they have a plan, has already harmed themselves, or cannot stay safe, move to the emergency steps below. Do not attempt to conduct a full risk assessment yourself. You can tell crisis professionals exactly what the student said and what you observed; you do not need to determine a diagnosis or level of risk before calling.

Listen to understand
Let the student describe what is happening. Keep your voice calm, avoid arguing about whether their feelings are justified, and do not rush to solve the problem. SAMHSA’s guidance is to listen without judgment. Helpful responses include:
- “I’m glad you told me.”
- “That sounds overwhelming.”
- “I’m here with you while we find more help.”
- “What kind of help feels possible right now?”
Do not promise that you will keep suicidal thoughts secret. Explain that you will involve people who can help keep the student safe, while sharing the situation only with those who need to respond. Avoid turning the conversation into an interrogation. Short, clear questions and patient listening usually provide more useful information than a rapid list of demands.
If the student says they may kill themselves
Stay with them and bring in help
If the student says they intend to kill themselves, appears in immediate danger, or has already harmed themselves, do not leave them alone. SAMHSA advises staying with the person or making sure the person is in a private, secure place with another caring person until further help is obtained. Ask another trusted person to join you so the response does not depend on one supporter.

You can also use the 988 online chat at 988lifeline.org.
If you are a roommate or friend, contact a resident adviser, residence-life professional, family member, or another trusted adult who can be physically present. If you are a family member at a distance, ask someone near the student to join them while emergency or crisis help is contacted. The important points are that the student is not left alone and that trained help is brought in promptly.
Use plain, calm language
Tell the student what you are doing and why: “Because you told me you may hurt yourself, I’m staying with you and we’re contacting help now.” Avoid debating, challenging them to prove they are serious, or trying to manage the crisis through reassurance alone. The goal is immediate connection with people trained to handle a crisis.
When self-harm has already happened
Any suspected life-threatening injury or overdose requires 911 or an emergency department. Stay with the student and provide responders with the clearest information you have about what happened. Do not leave them alone while waiting for help. If the student is receiving care, pass along relevant observations, such as when the behavior changed and what the student said, rather than attempting to interpret or investigate it yourself.
Connect the student with ongoing care
Start with the campus’s official resources
Colleges commonly provide a counseling center, student-support office, residence-life staff, or an after-hours crisis service. Procedures and hours vary by institution, so look up the college’s current official contact information rather than relying on an old number or an informal post. If the student lives in campus housing, a resident adviser or residence-life professional may help locate the correct after-hours pathway.

Offer to sit with the student while they call, text, or complete an appointment request. A concrete offer is easier to accept than “Let me know if you need anything”: “I can stay here while you call the counseling center, or we can contact 988 together.” If the counseling center is closed, ask the institution’s published after-hours service what to do; do not wait for regular office hours if the student is in immediate danger.
Include community professionals when appropriate
A primary-care clinician, licensed therapist, psychiatrist, or community mental-health service may be part of the student’s ongoing care. Help the student identify a practical next step, such as asking the campus counseling service for an intake or contacting a professional they already know. If the student is in immediate danger, do not delay emergency or crisis help while searching for a routine appointment.
If the student is reluctant
You cannot force someone to accept routine care. SAMHSA recommends being there and listening without judgment, and notes that it may take several conversations before someone accepts help. Keep the invitation specific and open: ask what barrier feels hardest, offer to accompany them, and set a time to check in again. A refusal of one option does not mean you should stop offering connection to appropriate help. If the student expresses imminent danger, follow the emergency steps even if they object to contacting help.
Reluctance may reflect fear, shame, uncertainty about services, or simply feeling overwhelmed. You can reduce the burden by helping find the correct number, sitting nearby during a call, or offering more than one appropriate route, such as campus counseling or 988. Do not present a commercial product, workbook, or wellness item as a substitute for crisis response or professional care.
Keep checking in after the first conversation
Support does not end when the student says they feel better or agrees to an appointment. NIMH recommends follow-up, and a continuing connection can make it easier for the student to disclose a worsening situation.
- Before you part, agree on the next contact: a call, text, or in-person check-in at a specific time.
- Ask how the connection to counseling, 988, a clinician, or another trusted person went.
- Notice whether warning signs are new, worsening, or returning, and ask directly again if suicide becomes a concern.
- Encourage the student to keep using professional and campus support rather than relying on one friend.
- If danger becomes imminent at any point, return to 911 or emergency-department guidance.
Following up is an act of care, not surveillance. Keep the conversation respectful and let the student know you would rather hear difficult news than have them handle it alone. A single reassuring conversation does not guarantee that the crisis has passed, so maintain the agreed check-in and respond to new information.
Guidance for different supporters
Friends and roommates
Use the relationship you already have: mention the change you have noticed, ask directly, listen, and offer to stay while the student contacts help. If you share housing, involve residence-life staff or another trusted adult when safety is a concern. Do not make yourself the only person who knows what is happening. A roommate can provide presence and observations, but cannot replace crisis workers or clinicians.

Family members
Distance can make it harder to see daily changes. Ask the student what support is useful, help identify campus or community care, and coordinate with another trusted person near campus when appropriate. If the student reports imminent danger, prioritize emergency help over trying to resolve the situation privately. Family members can remain available for follow-up while campus or community professionals handle assessment and treatment.

Instructors, advisers, and other trusted adults
State what you observed in concrete terms, invite the student to talk, and connect them with the institution’s published counseling or student-support pathway. You are not expected to provide therapy or make a diagnosis. If the student discloses immediate danger, stay engaged until emergency or crisis professionals take over and follow the institution’s current safety procedures. Share necessary safety information with the people responsible for responding rather than promising confidentiality you cannot keep.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to avoid
- Do not minimize the situation with comments such as “Everyone feels that way in college.”
- Do not argue, shame, lecture, or insist that the student simply think positively.
- Do not promise secrecy when suicide or serious self-harm is involved.
- Do not leave a student alone after they say they are going to kill themselves or when danger appears imminent.
- Do not present a warning-sign list as a diagnostic test.
- Do not imply that a friend, roommate, or family member can manage suicide risk without professional help.
- Do not delay urgent help while trying to arrange a routine appointment or gather perfect information.
- Do not assume that a student’s denial ends the conversation if warning signs continue; keep the door open and arrange follow-up.
U.S. crisis contacts and limits
In the United States, call 911 or go to an emergency department for imminent danger or a life-threatening emergency. Call or text 988 for suicide, mental-health, and substance-use crises; SAMHSA describes 988 as available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including for people concerned about a loved one. Online chat is available at 988lifeline.org.
Campus counseling centers, student-support offices, residence-life staff, and after-hours crisis services can help with ongoing care, but each college’s process differs. Find the institution’s current official instructions before a crisis occurs. Readers outside the United States should use their local emergency number and crisis service; the contacts above are U.S.-specific. Do not present 988 or a campus service as a substitute for 911 when a life-threatening emergency is occurring.
Protect your own capacity to help
Supporting a student through a crisis can be frightening and exhausting. Involve another trusted person and professional service rather than carrying the situation alone. You can care deeply while recognizing that trained crisis workers and clinicians must handle assessment and treatment. If the student’s situation changes, tell the relevant professional or emergency service what you observed and when it changed.
Set a realistic role for yourself: notice, ask, listen, connect, and follow up. You are not required to be available every minute or to solve the student’s underlying problems. Sharing responsibility with appropriate people protects both the student and the supporter.
The most useful sequence is simple: notice, ask directly, listen, stay when safety is uncertain, connect the student to the right level of help, and follow up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I say if my friend seems depressed?
Start with a specific observation and care: “I’ve noticed you seem overwhelmed and have been keeping to yourself. I care about you. Do you want to talk?” Listen without judgment, allow pauses, and ask what kind of help feels possible. If suicide is a concern, ask directly whether they are thinking about suicide.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWill asking about suicide put the idea in the student’s head?
No. NIMH says studies show that asking whether someone is suicidal does not increase suicidal behavior or thoughts. A calm, direct question can make it easier for the student to tell you what is happening.
Best Value
What do I do if the student says they have a plan or may act soon?
Do not leave them alone. Bring in another trusted person and seek immediate help. In the United States, call 911 or go to an emergency department for imminent danger or a life-threatening emergency. For a crisis without an immediate medical emergency, call or text 988 while staying with the student.
Should I promise to keep suicidal thoughts confidential?
No. Explain that you care and will involve people who can help keep the student safe. Share the necessary information with crisis professionals, emergency responders, campus staff, or another trusted person who needs to respond.
What if the student refuses counseling?
You cannot force routine care. Listen without judgment, ask what barrier feels hardest, offer to accompany them, and suggest another appropriate option such as 988 or a community professional. SAMHSA notes that it may take several conversations before someone accepts help. If danger is imminent, follow emergency guidance even if the student objects.
Recommended Free Tools
Which warning signs should concern me?
NIMH lists talk of wanting to die, hopelessness, feeling trapped or like a burden, unbearable pain, guilt or shame, making a plan or researching ways to die, withdrawing or saying goodbye, giving away important items, risky behavior, extreme mood changes, eating or sleeping changes, and increased alcohol or drug use. These signs call for a check-in and support; they are not a diagnosis.
Can a roommate or parent handle this alone?
No. A supporter can listen, stay present, and help connect the student with care, but should involve another trusted person and professional or crisis services when safety is uncertain. Do not make one friend or family member the entire safety plan.
What if I live outside the United States?
Use your country’s local emergency number and crisis service. The 911 and 988 instructions in this article are U.S.-specific. You should still use the same core approach: ask directly, listen without judgment, stay with the student when danger is possible, and connect them with trained help.
The Bottom Line
Notice meaningful changes, ask plainly about suicide, and listen without judgment. If danger is imminent or the student has already harmed themselves, stay with them and call 911 in the United States. For a crisis without an immediate medical emergency, call or text 988. Otherwise, help connect the student with current campus or community care and keep checking in. You can support the student without diagnosing or carrying the situation alone.
