Samsung SmartThings works with devices connected through a compatible hub, a manufacturer’s cloud integration, a direct SmartThings integration, or a supported Samsung Galaxy phone. Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices generally need a SmartThings-enabled hub; Matter devices need a compatible controller, and Matter-over-Thread devices also need a Thread Border Router. The reliable way to check a particular product is to search its exact model in the SmartThings app’s region-specific Supported devices catalog, then confirm that your hub and the features you need are supported.
What kinds of devices work with SmartThings?
Compatibility depends on more than a product’s Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter label. SmartThings supports several integration routes, and each can expose a different set of controls or features. SmartThings developer documentation describes the following paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Integration path | How it connects | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Hub-connected | The device connects through a compatible hub. Depending on the device and hub, the connection may use Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or LAN. | Confirm that the exact hub supports the device’s protocol and that the model and required capabilities are supported. |
| Cloud-connected | The manufacturer’s device service connects to SmartThings through an existing cloud integration. | Check the brand and model listing, and which functions the integration makes available. |
| Direct-connected | The product connects to the SmartThings platform directly, including documented Wi-Fi/SDK or MQTT integration routes. | Verify that the manufacturer supports the particular model and the features you want to use. |
| Mobile-connected | Some Bluetooth devices connect through a Samsung Galaxy phone. SmartThings Find supports locating functions for eligible devices. | Check the device, phone, and service requirements for the specific connection or Find feature. |
A device may connect successfully without every feature in its maker’s own app appearing in SmartThings. Check the model and the desired controls, not just whether the product can be added.
Do you need a SmartThings hub?
Not for every SmartThings device. A device using a supported cloud or direct integration may connect without your own SmartThings hub. SmartThings Support says Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub. Matter devices also need a compatible controller, which may be a hub or another supported SmartThings controller.

- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
Hub capabilities differ by model. A Samsung TV, appliance, or SmartThings-branded product should not be assumed to include the same radios or hub functions as another model in its category. Check the exact hub specifications and the Supported devices catalog before relying on it to connect a particular device.
Which protocols and hub features matter?
Zigbee
Zigbee devices generally connect through a SmartThings-enabled hub. Confirm that the hub model supports Zigbee and that the product itself appears in the Supported devices catalog for your region.

- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
Z-Wave
SmartThings describes its hub as a Z-Wave-certified central static controller. Non-battery-powered Z-Wave devices in a network can act as repeaters, helping relay communication. SmartThings says secure-enabled devices use 128-bit AES encrypted communication.

Removing a Z-Wave device may require exclusion from the network. SmartThings notes that the device usually needs a physical confirmation, such as pressing a button, while it is in range of the hub; keep access to the device when troubleshooting or changing hubs.
Matter over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread
Matter is an IP-based smart-home standard that can use Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet. SmartThings describes its app as the commissioner and a compatible hub as the controller. Matter support still depends on a compatible controller and the specific device model.

- Multi-Protocol Smart Hub with Matter Bridge – The M100 is a versatile smart hub compatible with Thread devices and Aqara Zigbee (** Not third-party Zigbee devices), supporting up to 20 Aqara Zigbee devices and 20 Thread devices. As a Matter Bridge, it connects Aqara Zigbee products to other smart home ecosystems, compatible with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Home Assistant, etc. Note: Use a 5V⎓0.5A power adapter (not included) and keep the product continuously powered during use.
- Advanced Matter Bridging for Seamless Smart Home Integration – The M100 enables Aqara’s unique features, such as facial recognition and complex automation, to work across Home Assistant and other Matter ecosystems. Expand your smart home with Aqara or third-party Matter devices (requires a Matter-enabled hub). Currently supports lights, thermostats, plugs, switches, buttons, and various sensors (motion, light, door/window, temperature/humidity), with more devices to be added in the future.
- Local Automation for Reliable Performance – Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond-level response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notification, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)
- Flexible Power & Small Size – Features a universal USB-A port for power and data, allowing connection to power banks, wall outlets, PCs, or routers for a simple and quick setup. The Hub M100's shaft can be adjusted within a 210-degree range, making its placement extremely flexible.
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 for Faster & Security—This product supports a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 wireless network connection, which enables more efficient connections with advanced WPA3 security. Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
Matter over Thread has an additional requirement: the controller setup must include a Thread Border Router. SmartThings’ support article identifies the SmartThings Hub 2018 (model IM6001-V3P01) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as controllers, and says the SmartThings Hub 2015 lacks a Thread Border Router. For that 2015 hub, the article describes using a third-party Thread Border Router on the same Wi-Fi/LAN. Because model, app, and firmware requirements can change, confirm the current requirements in SmartThings and the product documentation before buying or pairing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a device before buying or troubleshooting
- Open the regional catalog: In the SmartThings app, go to Menu → Supported devices and search by brand or device type. SmartThings says this catalog is region-specific.
- Match the exact model: Compare the model number on the product listing or device label. A brand or protocol match alone does not confirm compatibility.
- Identify the integration route: Determine whether the product connects through a hub, its maker’s cloud, a direct SmartThings integration, or a Galaxy phone. The route affects setup and which controls SmartThings can expose.
- Check hub and radio requirements: For hub-connected devices, confirm the exact hub model supports the needed protocol. For Matter over Thread, make sure the setup includes a Thread Border Router.
- Check the specific features: Confirm that the SmartThings integration supports the functions you need. For Z-Wave, this includes checking limitations on Long Range, SmartStart, and OTA updates.
- Use the maker’s pairing instructions: Follow its setup and reset procedure. For Z-Wave removal, you may need to press a physical button on the device while it is near the hub.
- Cross-check retailer claims: If a listing says “compatible,” compare that claim with the regional SmartThings catalog and the manufacturer’s instructions.
What does Works with SmartThings certification tell you?
Works with SmartThings (WWST) certification is a useful compatibility signal: SmartThings has a partner testing and certification program for connected devices and integrations. It does not replace checking the exact model, region, hub or controller requirements, and the features you expect to use. Matter branding answers a related but different question: it identifies a standard, not a guarantee that a particular product works with your specific SmartThings setup.
