Yellow means the letter is in the answer, but not in the position where you guessed it. Each color gives a position-specific clue; repeated letters need extra care because a tile does not, by itself, tell you the letter’s full count.
What a green tile means
A green tile confirms both parts of a match: the letter appears in the answer, and it is in the exact position shown in your guess. Keep that letter fixed in that position in your next guesses.

What a yellow tile means
A yellow tile confirms that the letter appears somewhere in the answer, but rules out the position it occupied in that guess. Move it to a different position in a later guess.
How repeated letters affect the clues
Colors do not always reveal the total number of times a letter appears. If a guess contains more than one copy of a letter that appears only once in the answer, the copies will not all represent separate matches. Treat each tile as feedback about that guessed copy and its position; do not assume that one yellow or green tile establishes the answer’s complete letter count.

The New York Times and Hasbro’s Wordle tabletop rulebook specifically warns that a green or yellow letter may appear again and explains the case where a guess has multiple copies but the secret word has just one. A 2022 paper on Wordle seed words likewise notes that answers can repeat characters and that tile colors alone do not disclose the full count: Selecting Seed Words for Wordle using Character Statistics.
Color accessibility in the tabletop game
The tabletop rulebook suggests saying aloud whether tiles should be green or yellow and underlining green letters for color-blind players. Those are instructions for the physical game; current accessibility settings in the digital Wordle interface are not established here.
