For most cleanup, start with Windows’ own Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations, review the categories and descriptions shown on your PC, and remove only what you understand. Do not assume that everything in a folder named “Temp” is safe to erase: Downloads and personal folders can contain files you still need, while deleting a previous Windows installation removes the option to roll back to the earlier version.
How to decide what to delete
Windows cleanup tools list categories for review and show how much space may be reclaimed. The available categories and amounts vary by PC, Windows build, and what is stored on the drive, so use the descriptions on your own screen rather than treating any online list as universal.

- Open Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, or open Cleanup recommendations under Storage.
- Read each listed category and its description. Check only the categories you want removed; leave anything you do not understand or may need.
- Select the cleanup or removal button shown by Windows to confirm.
If Storage Sense or the Temporary files page is unavailable, use Disk Cleanup: search for Disk Cleanup, choose a drive, and review the description for every category before selecting it. In Microsoft’s documented interface, Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Thumbnails are selected by default, but defaults can differ between Windows builds. Clear a selection if you do not want that category removed.

Temporary files shown in Settings
These are the best place to begin because Windows identifies the categories and estimated space to reclaim. The label does not mean every item across the PC is disposable; review the actual categories before proceeding.

Recycle Bin
Emptying the Recycle Bin permanently removes its contents and recovers their disk space. Open it first and restore anything you still want.
Downloads and other personal folders
Do not clear Downloads just because it is a common cleanup target. It can contain installers and other files you saved intentionally. Inspect the files and delete only those you no longer need; move wanted large files to another storage location if appropriate. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing drive space treats Downloads as a place to review for large user-saved files, not a folder to empty blindly.
Previous Windows installation (Windows.old)
Removing the previous Windows installation is a rollback decision, not routine housekeeping. Keep it if you may need to return to the prior Windows version: deleting it removes the files needed for that return. Microsoft says the previous version is automatically removed ten days after an upgrade; see Delete your previous version of Windows for the details.

When Disk Cleanup or update troubleshooting is appropriate
Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is a built-in alternative for reviewing cleanup categories. Search for the tool, select the drive, and check the description before choosing each item. Its displayed defaults should not be assumed to match every Windows version or device.
Windows Update cache
Do not routinely delete C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution as part of ordinary cleanup. Microsoft documents clearing its contents as a troubleshooting measure for update problems, involving stopping the Windows Update service, removing the directory contents, then starting the service again. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance for that procedure rather than treating the cache as a general temporary-file category.
If the Temp folder quickly fills again
Microsoft describes a specific case in which Microsoft Store .appx files rapidly refill the Temp folder after Cleanup recommendations. Repeatedly deleting files is not the recommended fix for that symptom. Try the Store and update troubleshooting steps Microsoft gives in its drive-space guidance:

If Windows says an update needs more space
Storage requirements vary with the update path and optional content, so there is no single free-space figure that applies to every update. Review Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup and choose only items you are comfortable removing. Microsoft’s update-space guidance says an external storage device can help with some update cases. It is optional—not required for ordinary temporary-file cleanup—and can also be used to move personal files you want to keep.
