Windows graphics settings let you choose an app’s preferred GPU, adjust how compatible windowed games are presented, configure HDR and refresh rate, and tune playback in some video apps. They affect different parts of the experience, so the right choice depends on your app, display, PC hardware, and whether you prioritize responsiveness or battery life.
What Windows graphics settings control
These controls are not one master performance switch. Per-app graphics preferences influence which GPU Windows prefers for a program; windowed-game optimization affects presentation for certain games; HDR and refresh rate configure the display; and video playback options apply only to apps that use Windows’ video platform.

Availability and results vary with Windows version, graphics drivers, GPU configuration, display capabilities, and laptop design. Microsoft documents expected behavior, not a guarantee that a setting will improve every PC or app.

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select an app or add it, open Options, choose a graphics preference, and save. On a PC with multiple GPUs, Windows offers choices such as Let Windows decide (Power saving), Power saving, and High performance. The exact choices depend on the system. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance describes these as preferences; choosing High performance does not guarantee a higher frame rate or override every app or driver decision.

- Power saving: A sensible starting point for light tasks or when you want to favor battery life.
- High performance: A reasonable preference for a demanding app when a discrete GPU is available.
- Let Windows decide: Leave the choice to Windows when you do not want to set an app-specific preference.
Why GPU choice affects battery and performance
Integrated GPUs are generally more power-efficient and are suited to lighter work. Discrete GPUs typically use more power and are better suited to heavier graphics tasks such as gaming, design, and intensive photo or video editing. Some laptops use the integrated GPU for lighter work and the discrete GPU for demanding tasks. There is no universally best preference: the workload and your battery priorities matter. Microsoft’s GPU overview explains the general distinction.
Use optimizations for windowed games when they apply
Optimizations for windowed games is a Windows 11 setting for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft says it moves compatible games from the legacy blt presentation model to flip model, which can reduce frame latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. It is not a setting for every game or every display mode.

Find it under Settings > System > Display > Graphics. After changing the option, restart the game. Auto HDR can turn this optimization on automatically; if you want to turn the optimization off, Microsoft says to turn off Auto HDR first. See Microsoft’s instructions for windowed games.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

HDR settings are useful only when both the PC and the connected display support the relevant HDR features. Windows’ HDR controls include selecting a display and adjusting HDR and SDR brightness. Microsoft’s guidance discusses HDR10 and wide-color-gamut support; the available controls depend on the hardware. Treat HDR as a capability-dependent display configuration, not a universal picture-quality switch. Microsoft’s HDR settings guide lists the requirements and controls.

- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
If a brightness adjustment does not appear in an app, restart that app. If colors look wrong, Microsoft recommends checking that the graphics driver is current.
Set refresh rate for smoothness or battery life
Refresh rate is how many times per second a display updates its image. A higher supported rate can make motion look smoother; a lower one can reduce display power use. To change it, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, choose the display if you have more than one, and select a rate that is listed for it. The available rates—and how they interact with resolution—depend on the display. Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions explain the control.

Dynamic Refresh Rate in Windows 11
Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can adjust refresh rate based on activity, but it requires compatible hardware. Microsoft says the display must support variable refresh rate and at least 120 Hz. DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games; if a game appears to run at a lower rate, Microsoft suggests disabling DRR as a troubleshooting step. Microsoft’s battery guidance covers DRR and power-saving context.
Adjust video playback only for supported apps
Windows’ Video playback settings affect apps that use its built-in video platform, including Photos, Movies & TV, and some third-party Store apps. Depending on the hardware, Windows can process video to enhance it or allow lower-resolution playback to save network bandwidth. These controls do not necessarily govern every browser or desktop video player. Microsoft’s video playback guide describes their scope.

If playback stalls or repeatedly starts and stops across multiple monitors, different refresh rates may be a factor. Microsoft suggests matching the monitors’ refresh rates as an adjustment to try.

Resolution is adjacent to graphics settings but controls how many pixels the display uses, not which GPU an app prefers. In Settings > System > Display, select the display first when using multiple monitors, then choose the resolution marked Recommended unless you have a specific reason to change it. A lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp or produce a small, centered, bordered, or stretched image. Microsoft’s resolution and layout guide explains the display controls.
Pick settings by the problem you want to solve
| Goal or symptom | Setting to try | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Favor battery life for a particular app | Set its Graphics preference to Power saving. | Actual power use depends on the PC, app, and workload. |
| Favor a discrete GPU for demanding work | Set that app to High performance, if the option and GPU are available. | It is a preference, not a promised performance increase. |
| Improve presentation for a windowed game | Try Optimizations for windowed games, then restart the game. | Windows 11; compatible DirectX 10/11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. |
| Use HDR | Configure the intended display in HDR settings. | Requires compatible PC and HDR display; some apps need restarting for brightness changes. |
| Change motion smoothness or reduce display power | Select a supported rate in Advanced display. | Rates depend on the display; DRR needs compatible hardware. |
| Fix stuttering video across monitors | Try matching the monitors’ refresh rates. | Windows playback controls apply only to apps using its video platform. |
Windows version and support
Microsoft documents HDR, video playback, refresh rate, battery guidance, and resolution controls for Windows 10 and Windows 11, while optimizations for windowed games and Dynamic Refresh Rate are Windows 11 features. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Settings and availability can vary by Windows build and hardware, so check the version installed on your PC and the capabilities of its display and GPU. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide provides related power-setting context.
