PS5 Pro PSSR and AMD FSR are not interchangeable upscalers. PSSR is Sony’s image-reconstruction technology for supported PS5 Pro games; FSR is AMD’s evolving family of developer-integrated graphics features, with compatibility and capabilities that depend on the version. Sony and AMD have collaborated on related technology, but that does not make the products identical. There is no established matched-settings test showing that one is universally better.
What PSSR and FSR do
PSSR: Sony’s PS5 Pro upscaler
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) uses AI to reconstruct an image as a game renders it. Sony describes it as analyzing game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. The goal is to deliver a higher-resolution output than the game’s internal rendering resolution, helping developers balance image quality and performance.

Sony announced an upgraded PSSR rollout for PS5 Pro in March 2026. It says the update improves reconstruction precision, motion stability and fine-detail clarity, and gives developers more flexibility. The rollout is for supported games, and Sony cautions that results can vary by title. Some supported games also offer an optional system setting to apply the improved version. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement lists examples and explains the rollout.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is not one fixed algorithm. Its generations and features differ. AMD’s current product page presents FSR Redstone as a suite that includes upscaling, frame generation and ray regeneration. Those are distinct functions: upscaling reconstructs an image at a higher output resolution, while frame generation creates additional frames and ray regeneration addresses ray-traced image data. A game may support one feature or version without supporting every item in the suite.

For that reason, “FSR” alone is not enough detail to predict image quality, performance or hardware compatibility. Check the specific game’s FSR version and which features it implements. AMD’s FSR overview and compatibility information describe the current family.
How their platform access differs
| Technology | Where it is used | What determines access |
|---|---|---|
| PSSR | PS5 Pro | The game must support PSSR; availability and options are title-specific. |
| AMD FSR | Supported games across AMD’s supported ecosystem, including PC hardware | Support depends on the FSR generation, game integration and, for some ML-based features, compatible hardware and required game integration. |
PSSR is a console feature applied in games that support it, rather than a setting that makes every PS5 Pro game use the technology. FSR is integrated by developers across its supported ecosystem. AMD says some machine-learning-based FSR features may also be enabled through AMD Software for compatible games with the required FSR integration; this does not mean every FSR feature works on every graphics card.
AMD’s compatibility information changes by generation, so consult the current FSR page and the game’s own support notes before assuming a particular card or feature is supported.

Project Amethyst connects their development, not their compatibility
Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration is a genuine link between the technologies. Sony says the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from the partnership, and has said AMD’s FSR 4 had already reflected collaboration benefits. That is evidence of shared research and development—not proof that PSSR and FSR use the same implementation, produce the same images, or run on the same platforms.
Sony reported on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. That is Sony’s dated count, not a current total. Sony’s announcement describes PSSR and the collaboration.
Image quality depends on the game and the comparison
When evaluating an upscaler, pay attention to fine detail, shimmering, flicker and stability during motion. Sony identifies precision and motion stability as improvement goals for upgraded PSSR, but those descriptions are Sony’s claims, not a controlled comparison with FSR. Actual results depend on the game, implementation, scene and settings.

A useful example of how these products coexist comes from IO Interactive’s 007 First Light: the developer said the game uses upgraded PSSR on PS5 Pro and FSR 3.1.5 on other platforms. That shows a developer selecting different upscalers for different platform versions; it does not establish which looks better, because it is not a matched, controlled head-to-head test. IO Interactive’s platform-specific explanation names the FSR version.
To compare screenshots or performance figures fairly, match the game patch, output resolution, internal render resolution or quality preset, hardware, and frame-generation setting. If frame generation is enabled for one result but not the other, the comparison is measuring more than upscaling alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do performance claims show which is faster?
No. AMD’s current FSR page cites an average 3.5× performance claim from AMD’s 2025 testing on a Radeon RX 9070 XT. AMD specifies FSR Redstone in Performance mode with frame generation enabled against a native-4K comparison; Ray Regeneration was enabled only for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. This is a vendor result under those stated conditions, not a comparison with PSSR and not a general prediction for other FSR settings, games or hardware. AMD’s page provides the test qualification.

The available evidence does not establish a universal visual-quality or speed winner between PSSR and FSR. A meaningful judgment requires results for the same game and scene with settings and hardware disclosed.
Current status: QSSR is a separate PS5 development
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), describing it as a new performance tier of AI upscaling derived from PSSR and Project Amethyst. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first announced PS5 games with QSSR. QSSR is a distinct announced tier for base PS5, not another name for PS5 Pro PSSR. Sony’s claims about QSSR’s image detail and stability are its own product characterization. Sony’s QSSR announcement provides its description.
