Windows 11 has no single feature called “security containers.” The phrase can describe several distinct isolation mechanisms: AppContainer limits what an app can access, Windows Sandbox runs an untrusted Win32 app in a disposable virtualized desktop, and virtualization-based security (VBS) isolates selected protections and secrets. Each limits a different risk; none guarantees that every threat or host resource is contained.
What “security containers” means in Windows 11
Think of these features as different boundaries, not interchangeable versions of one container. AppContainer operates at the process and resource level. Sandbox provides a temporary virtualized environment for running an app. VBS uses the Windows hypervisor and hardware virtualization to isolate selected security functions.

The practical question is what each boundary protects, what can cross it, and whether the feature is enabled and configured on your PC. Microsoft describes Windows Sandbox as a place for untrusted Win32 apps, AppContainer as least-privilege isolation, and VBS as a platform for particular protections—not a general-purpose safety guarantee. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Security Book and its VBS overview explain these distinctions.

AppContainer limits an app’s access to resources; Sandbox gives an untrusted program a temporary session; memory integrity focuses on kernel-mode code integrity; and Credential Guard protects selected authentication secrets. These boundaries also differ in what they expose, their compatibility costs, and the configuration required. Having one does not mean the others are active.

What each boundary protects
| Feature | Primary protection | Boundary and key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| AppContainer | An app’s access to system and user resources | Access is restricted by privileges and declared capabilities; permissions can still be granted where needed. |
| Windows Sandbox | A temporary session for an untrusted Win32 app | Closing Sandbox deletes its session state, but mapped host folders and exposed devices can cross the boundary. |
| Memory integrity | Kernel-mode code integrity | Runs within VBS; some drivers and apps may be incompatible. |
| Credential Guard | Selected authentication secrets | Protects secrets from specified extraction techniques, but does not stop malware from using credentials or privileges already available to it. |
What AppContainer restricts
AppContainer is a process and resource isolation environment. It can limit an application’s access to files, registry keys, devices, network resources, other processes, and windows. This is a least-privilege model: an app receives only the access it needs, through its capabilities and the resources permitted to it.
If an AppContainer app is compromised, its available access is constrained by that policy. It is not accurate to say that it cannot access anything. The app may have declared capabilities, and the system or user may allow access to particular resources. The actual boundary therefore depends on both the app’s configuration and the permissions granted. See Microsoft’s AppContainer isolation documentation.
That makes AppContainer different from putting a whole desktop in a virtual machine. It constrains a process according to the access rules that apply to it; it does not automatically turn every program into an isolated, disposable session. When assessing an AppContainer app, ask which capabilities it has and which files, devices, or other resources have been allowed. The name alone does not tell you the full access policy.

Windows Sandbox is a lightweight, virtualized desktop for running untrusted Win32 applications. It uses the same hardware-based virtualization technology as Hyper-V. Its most useful property for this task is disposability: when you close the Sandbox, its software, files, and state are removed. Microsoft puts it plainly: “When you close Windows Sandbox, it doesn’t save anything on your device.” Microsoft Learn
That makes Sandbox useful for reducing the risk of running an unfamiliar program in your ordinary Windows session. It does not make the program or any file it opens safe, and it does not guarantee that nothing from the host is exposed. What crosses the boundary depends partly on your Sandbox configuration. Closing it clears the temporary session; it cannot undo an action that affected a resource you made available to the sandbox.
In other words, Sandbox is most useful when the task can stay inside the disposable environment. If you deliberately provide the app with access to host data or devices, those become part of the risk calculation. Its protection is not a verdict on whether a download is trustworthy, nor a promise that every kind of malware or attack will be stopped.

Host folders and devices matter
A Sandbox configuration file can map folders from the host into the temporary environment and configure other integrations. A mapped folder makes its contents available inside Sandbox; if the app can modify those contents, the exposure is not limited to disposable Sandbox state. Microsoft’s configuration guidance also warns that exposing host video input can have security implications. Review the settings before opening untrusted software, particularly any host folders or devices that are made available. Windows Sandbox configuration guidance
For a cautious workflow, avoid mapping folders containing anything the test program should not see or change, and do not expose a device unless the task requires it. The point is not that every mapped folder or integration is unsafe; it is that an exposed resource is no longer protected simply because the app is running in Sandbox. Configuration determines how much of the host is reachable.
Protected Client adds another restriction
Protected Client runs Sandbox inside an AppContainer isolation environment. Microsoft notes that this can restrict copying files into and out of Sandbox. It is an additional restriction for workflows where file transfer is not needed, rather than a replacement for careful configuration of mapped folders and devices.
This setting represents a tradeoff: reducing file transfer can strengthen the boundary, but it may make a workflow less convenient if you need to bring a file in or retrieve one afterward. Consider whether transfer is genuinely necessary before enabling access for convenience. The added restriction does not change the need to review other host integrations.
Virtualized does not mean detached from every host resource
Sandbox’s architecture shares physical memory pages for operating-system binaries and can use GPU virtualization when compatible hardware and drivers are available. These are design and performance details; by themselves, they do not establish a security failure. Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox architecture overview
The distinction matters: virtualization describes how the environment is implemented, not a guarantee that no resource is shared or exposed. Use the documented boundary and your configuration to judge risk rather than treating the word “virtualized” as proof of total separation.

What VBS and memory integrity protect
VBS uses hardware virtualization and the Windows hypervisor to create an isolated environment that can host selected security solutions and restrict access to important operating-system resources or security assets. It is a platform used by specific protections, not a disposable workspace for opening arbitrary files.
Memory integrity, also called hypervisor-protected code integrity, runs kernel-mode code integrity checks inside VBS and restricts certain kernel-memory allocations. The goal is to make it harder for malicious or untrusted code to compromise the Windows kernel. It does not turn off the need for other security controls, nor does it promise to prevent every attack against the PC. Details and deployment guidance are in Microsoft’s memory integrity documentation.
Memory integrity and Credential Guard therefore use the VBS platform for different purposes: one protects kernel-mode code integrity, while the other isolates selected authentication secrets. Neither should be described as a general container for all Windows activity. Their value depends on the protection being supported and active, and on whether the threat falls within its scope.
Check memory integrity before changing it
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security > Core isolation details.
- Check the Memory integrity status. Availability depends on device support.
- Before enabling or changing it, check for app and driver compatibility. Microsoft warns that incompatible software or hardware drivers may malfunction and, rarely, can cause a boot failure.
- If the PC is managed by an employer or school, consult the administrator and current Microsoft deployment guidance before changing the setting.
Compatibility is the practical cost to weigh: an incompatible app or driver may stop working as expected, and in rare cases the device may fail to boot. That is a reason to check support guidance and compatibility, not a reason to assume the setting will cause problems on every system. Do not change a managed device’s security configuration without checking the applicable policy.
What Credential Guard protects—and what it does not
Credential Guard uses VBS to isolate selected authentication secrets, including material related to NTLM and Kerberos. By protecting those secrets in an isolated environment, it can block credential-theft techniques such as Pass-the-Hash and Pass-the-Ticket. Microsoft says even malware running with administrative privileges cannot extract the secrets protected by VBS. Credential Guard overview
That protection is about extracting selected secrets; it does not stop malware from using credentials or privileges already available to it. For example, malicious software operating in a user’s session may still act with the permissions of that session. Credential Guard is not a guarantee against account compromise or every form of credential abuse.

This is an important distinction in threat modeling. Preventing an attacker from reading protected secret material is not the same as preventing malicious code from using an already accessible logon session, capturing what a person types, or abusing access available through another authentication flow. Credential Guard reduces particular credential-theft opportunities; it does not make a compromised PC harmless to the accounts used on it.

Credential Guard does not protect against every credential theft or misuse scenario. Microsoft lists limitations involving keyloggers, physical attacks, local and Microsoft accounts, credential software outside Windows feature protection, supplied NTLM credentials, Kerberos service tickets, and certain protocols or credential flows. It also does not protect the Active Directory database on domain controllers.
These limits mean that the protection is neither a blanket credential vault for every account type nor a substitute for securing domain controllers. They also reinforce why “Credential Guard is on” is not enough to conclude that all credentials or every authentication exchange are protected. The relevant question is whether the secret and authentication path in a given scenario fall within its coverage.
In a Hyper-V guest, Credential Guard protects against attacks originating inside that virtual machine, not privileged attacks originating from its host. The precise coverage depends on the authentication path and where an attacker has control. Microsoft details the boundaries in How Credential Guard works.

Not on every Windows 11 PC. Microsoft documents default enablement for qualifying devices running Windows 11 version 22H2 or later, subject to system requirements and whether the feature was explicitly disabled. Edition and prior configuration can also affect the result. Secure Boot is recommended; TPM and UEFI lock provide additional protections. The 22H2-or-later reference describes a conditional default, not a guarantee about every installation. A device can run Windows 11 and still not meet the requirements or configuration conditions. For a personal device, verify its current status; for a work-managed device, configuration may also reflect organizational policy. The same general rule applies to other security features: support in Windows is not proof that a particular PC has the protection enabled.

Choose the boundary for the job
- Restrict an app’s ordinary access: AppContainer applies least-privilege resource access, with actual permissions determined by capabilities and grants.
- Try an untrusted Win32 app in a disposable desktop: Windows Sandbox removes its session state when closed, but review mapped folders and exposed devices first.
- Protect kernel code integrity: Memory integrity uses VBS and may affect driver or app compatibility.
- Reduce theft of selected authentication secrets: Credential Guard isolates those secrets but does not prevent every way malware can capture or use credentials.
These features address different parts of the attack surface. Using one does not imply that the others are enabled, supported, or configured suitably. Choose based on the asset and threat you are trying to address, then check the specific configuration and the resources that cross its boundary.
There is no cost or product purchase implied by the phrase “security containers” in this context: the mechanisms discussed are built-in Windows features and configuration choices. The relevant tradeoffs are support, compatibility, and workflow. For example, Protected Client may limit file copying, while memory integrity can affect incompatible apps or drivers; Sandbox’s mapped folders determine whether a temporary test can reach selected host files.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating “container” as a single Windows feature: AppContainer, Sandbox, and VBS operate at different levels and protect different assets.
- Assuming Sandbox cannot expose host data: Mapped folders and integrations determine what is available to an app inside it.
- Equating credential isolation with credential misuse prevention: Protecting secrets from extraction does not stop software from using access it already has.
- Assuming a feature is active because Windows 11 supports it: Hardware, edition, release, prior configuration, and management policy can affect availability or status.
- Enabling memory integrity without checking compatibility: Some drivers or apps may malfunction, and rare failures can prevent booting.
- Assuming virtualization means no resources are shared: Sandbox uses host resources by design, including shared physical memory pages for operating-system binaries; this is an architectural fact, not proof of a security flaw.
- Assuming temporary means every effect is reversible: Sandbox removes its own session state when closed, but changes to host resources you mapped or exposed should not be treated as disposable Sandbox state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows Sandbox protect my PC from viruses?
It can reduce exposure by running an untrusted Win32 app in a disposable virtualized desktop. Closing Sandbox removes its software, files, and state. It does not make the app or files safe or guarantee that nothing from the host is exposed: mapped folders and devices can cross the boundary, so review the configuration.
What does Windows Sandbox protect?
Windows Sandbox provides a temporary environment for untrusted Win32 apps. Its session state is discarded when you close it, which helps keep the test separate from your ordinary session. Host folders or devices exposed through configuration can still be available to the app.
What does Credential Guard protect?
Credential Guard uses VBS to isolate selected authentication secrets, including NTLM- and Kerberos-related material. It can block techniques such as Pass-the-Hash and Pass-the-Ticket, but does not stop malware from using credentials or privileges already available to it, and it does not cover every account type or authentication flow.
Is Credential Guard enabled by default in Windows 11?
Microsoft documents default enablement on qualifying Windows 11 version 22H2-or-later devices, subject to system requirements and configuration, including whether it was explicitly disabled. Edition and prior configuration can affect the result, so check the device rather than assuming the feature is active.
What does memory integrity do in Windows 11?
Memory integrity runs kernel-mode code integrity within VBS and restricts certain kernel-memory allocations. It is a targeted protection, not a general container for apps or files. Some drivers and apps may be incompatible, and Microsoft warns that a rare outcome can be a boot failure.

Is AppContainer the same as Windows Sandbox?
No. AppContainer limits a process’s access to resources according to its capabilities and permissions. Windows Sandbox is a disposable, virtualized desktop for untrusted Win32 apps. Protected Client can run Sandbox inside an AppContainer isolation environment, but that does not make the two features interchangeable.
The Bottom Line
Windows 11 does not offer one universal “security container.” AppContainer restricts app access, Sandbox gives an untrusted Win32 program a disposable virtualized session, and VBS-backed memory integrity and Credential Guard protect selected kernel code integrity and authentication secrets. Check what is actually enabled, review what crosses each boundary, and treat every protection as a way to reduce a specific risk—not as a guarantee that the whole PC or every credential is safe.
