Neither Nifty 50 nor BSE SENSEX is universally the better index to track. Nifty 50 is a 50-stock benchmark maintained by NSE Indices; SENSEX is BSE’s 30-company benchmark. Follow the one that matches the market or portfolio you want to monitor. To judge investment performance, compare equivalent periods and total-return series where available—not just headline index levels.
What Nifty 50 and SENSEX measure
Both indices are benchmarks for large, established Indian companies, but they are distinct baskets maintained by different index providers. Nifty 50 covers 50 stocks and is maintained by NSE Indices. BSE SENSEX covers 30 companies and is maintained by BSE Indices. They are related indicators of large-company share performance, not two names for the same index.

NSE Indices describes Nifty 50 as a diversified index representing important sectors of the economy. BSE says SENSEX is designed to measure the performance of 30 of the largest, most liquid and financially sound companies listed on BSE across key sectors. BSE’s profile gives the SENSEX launch date as January 2, 1986.

The table describes the index profiles; it does not establish which index has performed better. A larger constituent count also does not automatically make an index a complete picture of the market or a better portfolio benchmark.
Why the different baskets matter
Fifty stocks versus 30
Nifty 50 includes 20 more constituents than SENSEX. That is a difference in basket size, not a promise that Nifty 50 is proportionally more diversified or less risky. The companies do not necessarily receive equal weight, and a smaller number of large constituents can have substantial influence on a market-cap-weighted index. To assess concentration or sector exposure at a particular point in time, an investor needs current constituent and weight data for both indices.
The count is still a useful first distinction: Nifty 50 gives a 50-stock NSE benchmark, while SENSEX is BSE’s 30-company measure. It does not, by itself, tell you how much of each company the index represents, which sectors dominate at a given moment, or how a future change in membership may affect the basket. Those questions require looking at the current index composition rather than relying on the name or constituent count.

Nifty 50 is the relevant label when you need an NSE large-company benchmark; SENSEX is the relevant label when you need BSE’s 30-company bellwether. Their provider universes differ, so treat each as its own benchmark rather than assuming the membership or calculation is interchangeable. If a fund or report names one as its benchmark, use that specified index when evaluating the fund.
The different provider names are not merely alternate labels for a shared calculation. Each index is maintained as its own benchmark, with its own basket and index information. That is why a news headline saying that one index rose or fell should be read as a statement about that index’s constituents and calculation—not as a complete description of every listed Indian company.
Weighting affects what moves the index
NSE says Nifty 50 uses free-float market-capitalization weighting. In this approach, eligible shares available for public trading contribute to a company’s market value for index weighting. Larger eligible free-float companies can therefore have more influence on index movement than smaller constituents; a one-percentage-point move in every member is not assumed.
This matters when interpreting a daily move. An index can rise or fall even when not every constituent moves in the same direction, because the size of the companies’ index weights affects their contribution. The constituent count alone cannot show which companies have the greatest influence at a particular time; check current weight data for that.

What the 53.73% coverage figure does—and does not—say
NSE Indices reported that Nifty 50 represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalization of stocks listed on NSE as of March 30, 2026. This is a dated coverage measure from the provider, not a permanent property of the index. Market capitalization and index composition can change, so the figure should not be quoted without its date.
It also does not mean Nifty 50 contains 53.73% of listed companies, or that it represents 53.73% of every possible measure of the Indian market. Its denominator is the free-float market capitalization of NSE-listed stocks. No equivalent, matched-date SENSEX coverage figure is established here, so the Nifty statistic cannot be used as a direct numerical comparison with SENSEX.
For an investor seeking a broad-market view, the key implication is that even a large-company benchmark is still a slice of the listed market. A 50-stock or 30-company index should not be described as the whole market.
Coverage percentages also answer a different question from returns. The Nifty figure describes the share of NSE-listed free-float market capitalization represented on a particular date; it does not say how the index performed over a year, whether its constituents rose together, or whether a fund tracking it delivered the same result. Keep the measure, denominator and date attached when using the statistic.
How to compare investment performance fairly
Do not compare the displayed headline levels of Nifty 50 and SENSEX and treat the larger number as a better return. Index levels have their own base values and histories. A meaningful performance comparison calculates changes over the same dates using compatible return measures.
- Set the same start and end dates. A period that begins or ends on different market days can produce a misleading comparison.
- Match the currency and return basis. Compare like with like, and confirm whether each series is a price index or a total-return index.
- Include dividends when evaluating investment outcomes. A price index reflects price changes. NSE distinguishes this from its total-return index, which includes dividends; NSE identifies the total-return index as the appropriate comparison for mutual-fund benchmarking.
- Compare a fund with its stated benchmark. Use the benchmark identified in the fund documents, and align the benchmark and fund return periods.
- Account for fund-level effects. Check fees, tracking difference, and whether reported returns are before or after tax. An index return is not the same as the net return an investor receives from a fund.
- Check the documents and dates. Index constituents, weights, fund terms and reported returns can change. Use current source documents for the period and product you are assessing.
A price-only index can omit dividend income on the benchmark side of a fund comparison. That is why a total-return series is important when the question is investment performance rather than just day-to-day price movement. Make sure the fund and benchmark returns use comparable conventions; otherwise, the comparison may mix different things.
There are two different questions people often compress into “Which index did better?” One is which benchmark recorded the larger change over a specified period. The other is which investable product gave an investor the better net result. The first requires aligned index series and return conventions; the second also requires the product’s own costs, tracking difference and relevant tax treatment. An index comparison alone cannot answer both.
For example, if a fund reports a one-year return, compare it with its stated benchmark over that same one-year period, using a return series that includes dividends when appropriate. A comparison with a differently dated period, or with a price-only series when the fund return includes reinvested income, can create a mismatch. Check the fund documents for the benchmark and the basis used to report its return rather than assuming the index label settles the question.

The official material available for this article does not provide a current, matched-date comparative performance table for Nifty 50 and SENSEX. It therefore does not support declaring a recent winner. A past period’s result, even when accurately measured, would not establish that either index will lead in the future.
Which index should you track?
Track Nifty 50 for an NSE large-company benchmark
Choose Nifty 50 when your purpose is to follow NSE’s 50-stock large-company index, or when a portfolio’s documents identify it as the benchmark. Its constituent count and free-float weighting provide context for what the index represents, but do not turn it into a measure of every NSE-listed stock.
If you are following a daily market report, clarify whether you want the Nifty 50 specifically or a broader measure of listed shares. The Nifty 50 is a prominent large-company barometer, but a move in it does not prove that every segment of the market moved by the same amount.

Track SENSEX for BSE’s 30-company bellwether
Choose SENSEX when you want BSE’s benchmark of 30 large, liquid and financially sound listed companies, or when it is the benchmark named for the portfolio you are assessing. Its profile is a provider-defined description of that basket, not a guarantee that it will match the performance of another index.
For readers who follow BSE-specific market coverage, SENSEX supplies the relevant 30-company index reference. Its launch date, January 2, 1986, is useful historical context, but the age of an index is not evidence that it is automatically a better current benchmark for every investor or portfolio.
Track both when the question is market context
If you want to see how two prominent large-company benchmarks are moving, watching both can be useful. Their paths may differ because they contain different baskets and belong to different provider universes. A difference in daily performance does not by itself reveal which index is the better investment choice.
Following both can help frame headlines: if they move differently on a given day, the result is a prompt to examine the different baskets and their weights, not a reason to assume one figure is wrong. But the two indices still do not together become a complete proxy for all listed shares. Use an index designed for the broader exposure you want to examine if whole-market coverage is the objective.

Use neither alone for a whole-market view
If your question concerns the entire listed equity market rather than large companies, recognize the limits of these indices and look for a benchmark designed for the broader exposure you want to understand. Nifty 50’s dated coverage statistic illustrates that its basket is substantial but not the whole NSE-listed market; there is no comparable SENSEX coverage figure established here.

Tracking an index is not the same as investing in it
An index is a calculated benchmark, not a physical asset an investor can buy directly. NSE Indices lists Nifty 50 ETFs and domestic index funds as product categories associated with the index. These products seek to provide exposure linked to an index, but the index factsheet alone cannot tell you whether a particular fund is a good fit.
Before choosing an ETF or index fund, review the actual product documents. Compare its expense ratio, tracking difference, fund structure and liquidity, and check eligibility and tax treatment relevant to your circumstances. These are product-specific questions; the index name does not establish a fund’s cost or expected net return. Current availability, fees and terms must be verified against current fund documents.
It is useful to keep the benchmark decision separate from the product decision. First identify which index is relevant to the market or portfolio question. Then, if considering an investment product linked to that index, assess the product itself. Two products associated with the same index can have different costs or tracking outcomes, so the shared index name is not a substitute for comparing their documents.
The categories listed by NSE Indices establish that Nifty 50 ETFs and domestic index funds are available product types; they do not identify a particular fund as suitable or establish its current terms. Do not assume that a fund’s fees, liquidity, eligibility or tax treatment can be inferred from the index profile. Verify each against the current fund documents and your own circumstances.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling one index the winner from its headline level. Index point values have different bases; compare percentage returns over aligned dates instead.
- Using a price index to judge a dividend-inclusive investment. Confirm whether the benchmark series includes dividends and use a total-return comparison where appropriate.
- Assuming more constituents mean proportionally more diversification. Weighting and concentration matter as well as the count of stocks.
- Treating one coverage percentage as timeless. Keep the date and denominator attached to the 53.73% NSE figure.
- Applying a rule from a related index to SENSEX. A methodology for another BSE index does not establish SENSEX-specific rules.
- Assuming the index return equals a fund investor’s return. Fees, tracking difference, tax and the reporting period can affect the fund outcome.
- Reading a benchmark choice as a forecast. The index named in a fund document identifies the comparison standard; it does not guarantee future outperformance.
Another common trap is treating the word “representative” as if it meant “complete.” Providers describe the roles their indices are designed to play, but neither description turns a 50-stock or 30-company basket into every listed company. Check the actual objective before using an index as a proxy for a different part of the market.
A practical decision rule
Start with the question you want the index to answer. For an NSE large-company benchmark, follow Nifty 50; for BSE’s 30-company bellwether, follow SENSEX. For a fund, use its stated benchmark and compare total-return series over the same dates when assessing investment returns. For a view of the entire listed market, do not treat either large-company index as a complete proxy.
A quick checklist can keep the choice grounded: identify whether you are following NSE, BSE or a specific portfolio; confirm the benchmark named in the portfolio documents if you are judging a fund; use matching dates and currency for performance comparisons; check whether dividends are included; and consult current product documents before comparing funds. If the purpose is simply to follow prominent large-company market indicators, tracking both is reasonable—but neither is a promise of future returns or a full-market measure.

Is Nifty 50 better than SENSEX?
Neither is universally better. Nifty 50 is NSE Indices’ 50-stock benchmark, while SENSEX is BSE Indices’ 30-company benchmark. Choose based on the market context or portfolio benchmark you want to follow.
Best Value
Which index is broader, Nifty 50 or SENSEX?
Nifty 50 has more constituents—50 versus SENSEX’s 30—but constituent count alone does not establish proportional diversification or whole-market coverage. Both are large-company benchmarks, not complete measures of all listed stocks.
Can I compare the headline levels of Nifty 50 and SENSEX?
Not as a measure of which delivered the better return. Their index levels have different base values and histories. Compare percentage returns over the same dates and use compatible return series.
Should I use a price index or a total-return index to assess a fund?
For investment-performance comparisons, include dividends where appropriate. NSE distinguishes the Nifty 50 price index from a total-return index that includes dividends, and identifies the total-return index as the appropriate comparison for mutual-fund benchmarking.

Does Nifty 50 represent most of the Indian stock market?
NSE Indices reported that Nifty 50 represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalization of NSE-listed stocks as of March 30, 2026. That is a dated figure with a specific denominator; it does not mean the index contains most listed companies or covers the whole market.
Can I invest directly in Nifty 50 or SENSEX?
An index is a calculated benchmark, not an asset bought directly. NSE Indices lists Nifty 50 ETFs and domestic index funds as product categories. If considering a fund or ETF, check its current expense ratio, tracking difference, structure, liquidity, eligibility and tax treatment in its own documents.
Why might a fund’s return differ from its benchmark?
A fund’s outcome can differ because of fees, tracking difference, reporting period and tax treatment. Align the fund and benchmark dates and return conventions, and use the benchmark named in the fund documents.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Track Nifty 50 for an NSE 50-stock benchmark, SENSEX for BSE’s 30-company bellwether, or both for large-company market context. For investment performance, compare the portfolio with its stated benchmark over aligned dates and use total-return series where appropriate. Neither index covers the entire listed market or guarantees a better future return.
