The first question is eligibility, not which new Windows 11 feature looks most attractive. A standard Windows 11 installation has a defined hardware floor: a supported 64-bit processor, TPM 2.0, UEFI firmware that can use Secure Boot, sufficient memory and storage, compatible graphics, and a suitable display. Copilot+ features and gaming technologies such as DirectStorage impose higher, separate requirements.
Check the exact PC with Microsoft’s PC Health Check and Windows Update, then verify graphics, display, processor support and firmware settings yourself. A machine can pass the basic Windows 11 test and still lack the hardware for a particular feature.

Windows 11 minimum requirements, item by item
Microsoft’s baseline applies to the operating system itself. Meeting it means the PC is eligible in principle; it does not promise that every optional feature, application or game will run. Microsoft’s current requirement details are available in its Windows 11 System Requirements and Windows 11 specifications.
| Area | Windows 11 minimum or condition | What to check before upgrading |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1 GHz or faster, at least two cores, a compatible 64-bit processor or system-on-chip, and a model on Microsoft’s supported CPU list | Clock speed and core count alone are not enough. Confirm the exact processor model, generation and support-list status. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | This is an installation minimum, not a performance target. Check whether the computer’s memory is replaceable or expandable. |
| Storage | 64 GB or larger storage device | The operating system also needs working space for updates, temporary files and applications. Actual free-space needs vary with the installation and update history. |
| Firmware and security | UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, plus TPM 2.0 | The features may exist but be disabled. Menus and available options differ by manufacturer and model. |
| Graphics | DirectX 12 or later with a WDDM 2.0 driver | PC Health Check does not evaluate this requirement, so inspect the graphics hardware and driver separately. |
| Display | At least 720p, larger than 9 inches diagonally, with 8 bits per color channel | Check an older monitor, unusual panel or custom system independently; PC Health Check does not test the display requirement. |
| Initial setup | Internet connection and a Microsoft account for Windows 11 Home and Pro used personally | Internet access is also needed for updates and some features after setup. |
| Windows Update upgrade source | Windows 10 version 2004 or later | A compatible PC may still need to reach the required Windows 10 version before Windows Update offers the upgrade. |
Microsoft explicitly says that the 1 GHz clock-speed and two-core conditions are inherent to the processor as manufactured and are not independently upgradable components. A processor that meets those numbers but is absent from Microsoft’s supported list is not automatically eligible.

How to check whether your exact PC qualifies
1. Run PC Health Check
- Install or open Microsoft’s PC Health Check app.
- Choose the Windows 11 compatibility check and read the reason for any failure, rather than treating a single pass or fail as a complete hardware audit.
- Record the processor, TPM and Secure Boot findings so you can compare them with the PC maker’s specifications.
PC Health Check is useful for the main compatibility gates, but Microsoft says it does not check the graphics-card or display requirements. Those two items require a separate inspection.
2. Review Windows Update
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10.
- Install available Windows 10 updates and confirm the installed version is 2004 or newer.
- Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade page if you need the official readiness guidance.
Windows Update availability is device-specific. After changing firmware settings or replacing hardware, Microsoft advises waiting until Windows Update notifies you that Windows 11 is ready for that PC instead of forcing an immediate upgrade.
3. Verify the processor and firmware with the manufacturer
Open the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model, not merely the product family. Confirm the installed CPU appears on Microsoft’s supported list, identify whether the system uses UEFI, and look for documentation on TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, RAM slots and storage interfaces. Laptop upgrade options are often more limited than desktop options, and model-specific documentation controls what is safe to change.
4. Check graphics and display yourself
For graphics, identify the GPU or integrated-graphics model and its installed WDDM driver, then confirm DirectX 12 support. For the display, verify resolution, diagonal size and color depth. A PC can pass PC Health Check while failing one of these untested conditions.

Which shortfalls can be fixed?
RAM below 4 GB
Some computers permit a memory upgrade, but the supported capacity, module type and number of slots are model-specific. Check the service manual or manufacturer support page before buying memory. Reaching 4 GB may satisfy the operating-system minimum while still producing poor multitasking performance; the requirement is a floor, not a recommendation for comfortable use.
Storage below 64 GB or too little free space
A compatible replacement or expansion drive may solve a capacity shortfall when the computer has an accessible slot or replaceable drive. Confirm the interface, physical size, firmware support and recovery-process requirements first. Even a 64 GB device can become impractical once Windows updates, applications and user files consume the available space, because Microsoft does not define one universal amount of extra free space for every system.
TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot disabled
Some systems include the necessary security hardware and UEFI capability but ship with one or both options disabled. Whether they can be enabled, and the exact menu names, depend on the manufacturer and model. Use the maker’s instructions rather than a generic BIOS recipe. Firmware changes can affect boot configuration and encryption, so back up important data and make sure you have recovery information before changing settings.

Unsupported or inadequate CPU
CPU clock speed and core count cannot be upgraded independently. If the processor is not on Microsoft’s supported list, replacing it is usually a system-level project involving motherboard, firmware and cooling compatibility; on many laptops it is not a practical service option. Do not assume that a faster-looking specification overcomes an unsupported model.

Graphics or display failure
A graphics or display shortfall is not repaired by enabling TPM or Secure Boot. A desktop may accept a compatible graphics-card or monitor change, while a laptop’s graphics hardware and panel are commonly fixed. Confirm the complete platform before spending money on an upgrade.
Features that require more than the Windows 11 minimum
Copilot+ PCs
Copilot+ is a separate class of Windows PC, not a prerequisite for installing or using ordinary Windows 11. Microsoft specifies a compatible neural processing unit capable of at least 40 TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. Microsoft’s currently listed processor families include AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series, Intel Core Ultra 200V and 300V series, and Snapdragon X series; the supported-family list can change, so check the live specifications page before buying.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 25H2 documentation identifies Copilot+-only experiences such as Click to Do, Recall (preview), improved Windows search and Agent in Settings. It also lists Live Captions, Windows Studio Effects, Cocreator in Paint, Auto Super Resolution, and Photos Restyle/Image Creator. Availability can vary by device, processor, language and region. Recall is disabled by default and is removed on managed devices, according to Microsoft’s 25H2 feature documentation. Therefore, buying a Copilot+ specification does not guarantee that every named experience will appear in every market or configuration.

DirectStorage for supported games
DirectStorage is a game-specific requirement, not a general Windows 11 storage requirement. Microsoft says a supported game must use an NVMe SSD with the Standard NVM Express Controller driver and a DirectX 12 graphics processor supporting Shader Model 6.0. An NVMe drive can therefore matter to a gamer targeting compatible titles, but ordinary Windows 11 does not require NVMe storage. Individual games, applications and add-on hardware may impose additional requirements, as Microsoft explains in its Windows 11 requirements documentation.

Upgrade timing, editions and S mode
Windows 10 version and readiness
For an in-place Windows Update upgrade, start from Windows 10 version 2004 or later. Keep the PC fully updated, complete the compatibility checks, and wait for Windows Update to offer Windows 11 after any hardware or firmware change. An offer that has not appeared is not proof that the hardware is permanently incompatible; it may indicate that Microsoft has not yet declared that device ready.
Windows 10 in S mode
Windows 10 Pro, Education and Enterprise in S mode must switch out of S mode before upgrading and cannot return to S mode in Windows 11. Windows 10 Home in S mode can upgrade to Windows 11 Home in S mode. Treat this as an edition decision: switching out changes the software model, so confirm that the user accepts the change before starting.
Home and Pro setup account requirement
For personal use, Windows 11 Home and Pro require an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial setup. Organizations and other licensing scenarios can have different deployment processes, but a personal installation should be planned around this requirement rather than assuming an offline first-run path.

| Finding | Likely action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| RAM or storage is the only shortfall and the model supports replacement | Investigate a model-compatible upgrade | These are the components Microsoft identifies as potentially upgradable on some PCs. |
| TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot exists but is disabled | Follow the manufacturer’s firmware procedure | The capability may be configurable, but menu paths and risks are model-specific. |
| CPU is unsupported, soldered, or otherwise non-replaceable | Compare a replacement system | Clock speed and core count are not independent upgrades, and a platform change may be required. |
| Graphics or display fails the requirement | Consider a compatible desktop component or a new system | PC Health Check does not detect these failures, and laptop parts may not be replaceable. |
| You specifically need Copilot+ experiences | Choose a system meeting the Copilot+ specification | Adding RAM or an SSD to a conventional Windows 11 PC does not create the required NPU capability. |
| You need DirectStorage for particular games | Verify the game, NVMe controller and GPU together | DirectStorage depends on the game and the complete storage/graphics path. |
Before opening a chassis, check manufacturer upgrade limits and warranty terms. A replacement is most defensible when the processor or platform is the blocker, when required parts are unavailable, or when the cost and risk of a model-specific repair approach that of a supported system. Do not assume an upgrade is cheaper without the exact configuration and local parts prices.
Common upgrade failures and how to recover
- “The PC passed, but a feature is missing.” Recheck whether the feature is Copilot+-exclusive, region- or language-dependent, preview-only, or dependent on a separate application or game requirement.
- “PC Health Check passed, but graphics compatibility is questioned.” Inspect the GPU, DirectX level and WDDM 2.0 driver manually; the app does not test graphics.
- “Windows Update does not offer Windows 11.” Confirm Windows 10 is version 2004 or later, install pending updates, undo unsupported firmware changes, and wait for Microsoft’s device-readiness notification.
- “Enabling firmware security caused a boot problem.” Stop changing settings blindly. Use the PC maker’s recovery instructions, verify the boot mode and encryption-recovery information, and restore the documented configuration before retrying.
- “A new drive or RAM module is not recognized.” Recheck the model’s supported interface, capacity, module type and firmware limitations. Compatibility is specific to the computer, not just the part’s headline specification.
- “The installer requests an account or internet.” For personal Home and Pro setup, provide the required connection and Microsoft account; this is an expected setup condition, not necessarily an installation error.
Support dates to include in the decision
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 11 support is version-specific: Microsoft’s lifecycle listing gives Windows 11 Home and Pro version 25H2 support through October 13, 2027, and version 24H2 through October 14, 2026. Because the current date is October 15, 2026, that 24H2 date has passed; verify the installed edition and version against Microsoft’s Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle page before relying on a support milestone. Support dates do not change the hardware test, but they affect whether keeping an unsupported Windows 10 installation is a sensible long-term plan.
Make the decision in the right order
- Establish baseline eligibility: supported CPU, TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics and display.
- Separate configurable problems from parts that cannot be upgraded independently.
- Identify whether the goal is ordinary Windows 11, Copilot+ functionality, or a game-specific feature such as DirectStorage.
- Check the edition, Windows 10 version and support horizon.
- Only then price compatible RAM, storage, a desktop graphics solution or a replacement PC.
A PC that clears the Windows 11 minimums is suitable for the operating system, but feature access depends on the additional hardware and software conditions described above. Testing the exact model first prevents both unnecessary replacement and upgrades that cannot solve the real blocker.
