Windows 11 26H1 is a targeted release for new PCs with select hardware, not the routine next feature update for existing Windows 11 computers. Microsoft says it is associated with devices using Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series processors, is not offered as an in-place upgrade from 24H2 or 25H2, and will not move directly to the annual feature update planned for the second half of 2026. A 26H1 PC will continue to receive monthly updates, but Microsoft has not published the exact future migration route or a 26H1 end-of-support date.
What Windows 11 26H1 is—and who it is for
Microsoft describes Windows 11 version 26H1 as a release for new devices with select new silicon. In its February 10, 2026 explanation, Microsoft identified devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series processors as the current hardware association. That is a processor-family-level description, not a complete list of eligible PC models or configurations. Check the specific computer’s manufacturer listing and support information before assuming a model qualifies. Microsoft’s Windows IT Pro explanation of 26H1

The “H1” label may look like the start of a familiar annual update cycle, but Microsoft says 26H1 is not the ordinary next feature update for existing PCs. The company put it plainly: “Windows 11, version 26H1 is not a feature update for version 25H2.”

Can you upgrade an existing Windows 11 PC to 26H1?
No—not as an in-place update from Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2. Microsoft says it is not offering 26H1 through that upgrade path. If your current PC runs either version, 26H1 is not an update you should expect to find or seek through Windows Update. Microsoft’s stated scope is new devices with select hardware, rather than a general rollout to existing PCs.

What happens to feature updates on a 26H1 PC?
A 26H1 device will not receive the next annual feature update planned for the second half of 2026 as a direct update. Microsoft says 26H1 is built on a different Windows core from 24H2, 25H2, and that upcoming release; the Windows Insider Program Team reiterated on May 29, 2026 that 26H1 devices “will not be able to update to the next annual feature update in the second half of 2026.”
Microsoft says a path to a future Windows release will be available, but its cited guidance does not name that release or specify when or how devices will transition. It also does not establish whether every 26H1 device will use the same route. Windows Insider Program announcement of May 29, 2026

Will 26H1 still receive security and other updates?
Yes. Microsoft says 26H1 devices continue to receive monthly security, quality, and feature updates. This monthly servicing is separate from moving to the next annual feature update: missing the second-half 2026 feature-update path does not mean monthly maintenance stops.

For managed environments, Microsoft says security updates can be managed with Windows Autopatch, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Configuration Manager. However, 26H1 does not support hotpatch updates. Microsoft states: “Windows 11, version 26H1 does not support hotpatch updates.” Do not assume that the availability of ordinary monthly servicing means every Windows servicing capability is supported.

What is known—and not known—about 26H1 hardware compatibility?
The cited Microsoft guidance connects 26H1 with new devices using Snapdragon X2 Series processors, but it does not provide a complete hardware-compatibility matrix, name all eligible PC models, or confirm that every configuration using that processor family will ship with 26H1. Compatibility is therefore best checked at the exact device-and-configuration level with its manufacturer.
Microsoft Insider posts document preview-channel activity, not general retail availability or an upgrade offer for existing PCs. For example, the May 14, 2026 Release Preview announcement listed build 28000.2176, and the September 25 announcement listed Beta build 28020.3112 and Experimental build 28120.3122. Those build identifiers describe the named Insider channels; they do not establish that a build is a general release or that a current retail PC can install 26H1.

What organizations should consider
In its February 10, 2026 guidance, Microsoft recommended that enterprise deployments continue to use broadly released Windows 11 versions such as 24H2 and 25H2, and said 26H1 did not require a change to existing rollout plans. That is Microsoft’s advice as of that date, not a permanent deployment recommendation. Organizations evaluating a 26H1 device should account for its distinct feature-update path, continued monthly security servicing, and lack of hotpatch support.
