What Will the Next Interstellar Spacecraft Be Able to Do?

Voyager 1 and 2 entered the interstellar medium by crossing the heliopause, but neither has reached another star. Here’s what future probes may realistically achieve—and what remains a concept.

“Interstellar spacecraft” can mean probes that cross the Sun’s heliopause into the surrounding interstellar medium—or craft designed to travel to another star. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have achieved the first milestone, not the second. The next near-term advance may be a faster probe to the heliopause; a mission to another star remains a much more distant prospect, with no approved flight schedule established by the sources cited here.

What does “interstellar spacecraft” mean?

The term describes two very different achievements. A probe can enter the local interstellar medium by crossing the heliopause, the boundary where the Sun’s solar-wind bubble meets the surrounding interstellar medium. That crossing does not mean it has escaped the solar system’s gravitational reach: NASA places the solar system’s outer boundary beyond the distant Oort Cloud.

Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause on Aug. 25, 2012, at about 122 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun, according to NASA’s Interstellar Mission page. Voyager 2 crossed on Nov. 5, 2018. NASA’s announcement of that crossing explicitly said both spacecraft had left the heliosphere but had “not yet left the solar system.”

What have the Voyager probes actually measured?

The crossings were identified through changes in the spacecrafts’ measurements, not by reaching another star. Voyager 2’s plasma instrument recorded a steep decline in the speed of solar-wind particles as it crossed the heliopause. Voyager 1’s plasma instrument had stopped working before its crossing, so scientists relied on other evidence, including plasma-wave data, to confirm its passage.

The measurements give scientists direct observations of the boundary and the nearby interstellar environment. As Voyager project scientist Ed Stone said in NASA’s Dec. 10, 2018 announcement, “There is still a lot to learn about the region of interstellar space immediately beyond the heliopause.”

Could a future probe reach the heliopause faster?

One proposed approach is the Heliopause Electrostatic Rapid Transit System, or HERTS. NASA’s concept uses a rotating spacecraft and long wires held at a positive electrical potential. The wires would deflect protons in the solar wind; that exchange of momentum could push the spacecraft outward. Unlike a mission intended to reach another star, this concept is aimed at travel within the heliosphere, toward the heliopause.

A NASA article reported a projected heliopause trip of just under 10 years for the concept. Bruce Wiegmann, identified there as a NASA engineer and HERTS principal investigator, said, “Our investigation has shown that an interstellar probe mission propelled by an E-Sail could travel to the heliopause in just under 10 years.” This is a model-based concept estimate, not a demonstrated flight time or an operational capability. NASA’s June 4, 2014 HERTS description also said the technology had a low readiness level and needed further development.

Measure Voyager HERTS concept
Trip to the heliopause region About 35 years to roughly 121 AU, as reported in NASA’s E-Sail article; historical flight experience. Just under 10 years, as projected in NASA’s concept material; an estimate, not a flown mission.
Status Voyager 1 and 2 crossed the heliopause, in 2012 and 2018 respectively. Research concept requiring additional development; no flight schedule is established by the cited material.

The figures do not show that a HERTS spacecraft will make the trip in that time. They describe a concept projection against Voyager’s actual journey.

What about spacecraft that could travel to another star?

Reaching the local interstellar medium is not the same as reaching another star. The sources cited here describe a NASA TechPort search result for PROCSIMA, a diffractionless beamed-propulsion concept intended for interstellar missions. That record alone does not establish an approved mission, a spacecraft under construction, or a launch date. It therefore cannot support a claim that a beamed-propulsion mission is underway.

For any proposed interstellar spacecraft, the label “interstellar” is not enough to judge what it could accomplish. A meaningful comparison would need to establish:

  • Destination and science objective: the heliopause and nearby interstellar medium, or another star.
  • Propulsion and energy source: what produces thrust and how the spacecraft receives or carries energy.
  • Payload and travel time: what instruments or other payload it could carry, and how long the journey is expected to take.
  • Technology readiness: which parts have been tested and what remains conceptual.
  • Communications and data return: how the craft would send results back over extreme distances.

The available concepts do not provide enough current, comparable mission designs to rank them on these criteria. The reviewed NASA pages establish Voyager milestones and describe past propulsion concepts; they do not establish which future interstellar-probe missions are currently funded, approved, or scheduled.

What is a realistic expectation for the next milestone?

The clearest near-term scientific target is further exploration of the heliopause and the local interstellar medium, not a confirmed journey to another star. Voyager has shown that a spacecraft can cross the heliopause and return measurements from beyond it. A faster probe is a research goal represented by concepts such as HERTS, but its projected travel time should not be mistaken for a mission promise. A spacecraft reaching another star remains a separate and much more ambitious category, and the sources cited here do not establish an approved mission or timetable.

NASA’s Voyager 1 mission page provides current mission information; it does not change the distinction between crossing the heliopause and arriving at another star.
