Wi-Fi 8 is being developed to make wireless connections more reliable in difficult conditions, not to set a new peak-speed record. Its proposed goals include better throughput when signals are challenging, lower latency for the slowest portion of connections, and fewer dropped packets as devices move between access points. Those are targets for an unfinished standard—not guaranteed improvements in products you can buy today.
What Wi-Fi 8 is—and its status
Wi-Fi 8 is the common industry name associated with IEEE P802.11bn, an amendment titled “Enhancements for Ultra High Reliability” (UHR). As of the IEEE Working Group timeline dated September 19, 2026, the project was still in draft development at D2.00. The timeline lists predicted approval milestones extending into 2028; these are projections, not guaranteed publication or product-release dates. See the IEEE 802.11 project timeline and the Working Group status update.

For comparison, IEEE identifies Wi-Fi 7 with IEEE Std 802.11be-2024, published on July 22, 2025. That makes Wi-Fi 7 a published standard and a current product category, while Wi-Fi 8 remains a work in progress.
Wi-Fi 7 vs. Wi-Fi 8: the intended difference
The clearest distinction is the kind of performance each comparison highlights: Wi-Fi 7 is an established standard, while Wi-Fi 8’s stated UHR goals emphasize consistency in challenging conditions. A Qualcomm white paper relaying the IEEE scope gives these goals:

The three Wi-Fi 8 figures are described as “up to” goals in the 2025 Qualcomm white paper, which summarizes the IEEE scope. They should not be read as measured gains over Wi-Fi 7 in every home, device, or use case.
What the Wi-Fi 8 targets mean in everyday use
More useful throughput when conditions are difficult
Throughput is the data delivered in practice, rather than a maximum link-rate figure. The target concerns challenging signal conditions, such as weak or fluctuating reception and interference or congestion. Qualcomm frames the work around isolated and overlapping network deployments. Intel also describes a broader aim of more reliable, deterministic operation in its 2025 Wi-Fi 8 white paper. These descriptions point to steadier performance, not a proven speed increase in any particular environment.

Lower latency at the 95th percentile
The 95th percentile describes the slower end of a distribution: roughly 95% of measured latency values fall at or below that point, while the slowest 5% are higher. A target to reduce latency there is about limiting bad delays, not necessarily lowering the average by the same amount. That could matter for time-sensitive interactions when connections are under strain, but the cited target does not predict the result for a specific application or network.
Fewer packet drops while moving between access points
When a device moves through a home, office, or other multi-access-point network, it may transition from one access point to another. The Wi-Fi 8 goal targets fewer dropped packets during those transitions. Mesh systems are a natural example of where that goal could matter, but the target does not guarantee that every mesh setup will improve; results depend on the eventual standard, compatible devices, and network conditions.

- FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to deliver the full speed of your internet plan across a medium to large home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart devices.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- WIFI 7 SPEED FOR TODAY'S FASTEST INTERNET PLANS: Up to 6.5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. Keeps every device connected at the same time with MU-MIMO and OFDMA. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What Wi-Fi 8 does not establish
- A faster peak rate than Wi-Fi 7: The cited UHR goals support a focus on performance under difficult conditions, latency, and packet loss. They do not establish a higher headline maximum speed.
- A guaranteed 25% improvement: The figures are “up to” targets, not universal gains or independent benchmarks of retail products.
- An upgrade path for existing Wi-Fi 7 gear: The cited material does not establish that Wi-Fi 7 routers or clients can become Wi-Fi 8 devices through a software update.
- A fix for every bottleneck: A new router alone cannot ensure better results if the client device, placement, interference, or broadband connection is the limiting factor. This is practical networking context, not a measured Wi-Fi 8 finding.
Who may benefit—and what to do now
The stated goals are most relevant to people dealing with congested or difficult radio conditions, coverage boundaries, or movement between access points. Those are intended use cases suggested by the target descriptions, not a promise that every user in those situations will see a benefit.
If you need a router or mesh system now, Wi-Fi 7 is a published standard and a current category to consider. Do not treat a Wi-Fi 7 product as Wi-Fi 8-ready: the cited sources do not establish that it can be upgraded. If you are deciding whether to wait, base that choice on your present coverage and performance needs rather than treating Wi-Fi 8’s draft targets as guaranteed product specifications.
