What We Learned Putting Social Media APIs Behind a Hosted MCP Server

A hosted MCP server has to do more than unify social APIs. Uplika’s reported lessons cover authorization, platform-specific data rules, and waiting for publish confirmation.

Putting social media APIs behind a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server is not just a matter of wrapping endpoints as tools. In Uplika’s account of building its service, the hardest work involved authorizing users safely, representing platform-specific rules accurately, and handling the fact that a successful publish request may not mean a post is live yet.

The lessons below describe what Uplika reported in its DEV Community article. They are the team’s implementation experience, not independently reproduced findings or universal requirements for every MCP server.

How a hosted MCP server changes the integration problem

A hosted MCP server gives an AI client a common interface to tools that act on connected social accounts. Uplika described its service as letting an agent publish through accounts a user had connected. Its article listed Threads, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Bluesky, and Telegram; it said Naver Blog was handled through a Chrome extension and TikTok was still in app review. Those availability and review details are time-sensitive claims from the article, not a guarantee of current support.

The shared tool interface does not make the platforms behave alike. Authentication, text offsets, media processing, privacy settings, identifiers, and deletion semantics still follow each platform’s rules. A robust server must preserve those differences instead of hiding them behind an overly generic “publish” operation.

Why the MCP authorization flow was separate from API keys

Uplika said it chose remote MCP authorization so users would not have to paste a secret into an agent’s configuration. In its described flow, a request without a token receives a 401 response with a WWW-Authenticate header pointing to protected-resource metadata. The client reads authorization-server metadata, dynamically registers, uses PKCE, and sends the user to approve access in a browser. Uplika described API keys as an option for direct REST API calls, separate from MCP authorization.

This is the flow Uplika reported; the article does not establish that every MCP client currently handles each step the same way. The practical design principle is to keep the authorization method clear for the access path being used rather than treating an MCP connection and a direct API integration as interchangeable.

Do not issue a token that cannot accomplish the task

The article says that if a user has not connected a social account, authorization stops and prompts them to connect a channel. The team’s stated rationale was to avoid giving an agent a token that appears ready to publish but cannot publish anywhere. That makes account connection part of task readiness, not merely a setup detail.

Tool hints are part of the tool contract

Uplika reported that during ChatGPT app review it was asked to consider the readOnlyHint, destructiveHint, and openWorldHint annotations. The team said it stores all three hints for each tool in one table and has a test that fails if a hint is missing. This is a report of that team’s review experience, not evidence that every client applies the same review policy or that the requirements remain unchanged.

The broader engineering lesson is to treat tool metadata as part of the interface contract. Hints should be maintained alongside tool definitions and checked systematically, rather than left to be remembered during a review or added inconsistently across tools.

Platform-specific details that broke generic assumptions

Bluesky: byte offsets and identifier length

Uplika reported that Bluesky link facets use UTF-8 byte offsets, not character indexes. A URL appearing in post text is not automatically a link; the facet must be constructed. Code that calculates offsets by counting visible characters can therefore mark the wrong span, particularly when non-ASCII text occurs before the URL.

The team also said AT-URIs were around 70 characters and exceeded a database field defined as VARCHAR(64). Its account is a reminder to size storage for actual identifiers and to avoid assuming that a short field will fit every platform’s identifiers.

YouTube: resumable upload URLs

The article says YouTube resumable upload session URLs were 240 or more characters, longer than another 64-character database column. Session URLs are operational data, not compact identifiers; storing them in a field sized for a short token risks truncation and failed uploads.

Telegram: code points, UTF-16 offsets, and albums

Uplika reported that Telegram caption limits count code points, while Bot API entity offsets use UTF-16. Those are different ways of measuring text, so a server that validates a caption using one representation and calculates entity offsets using another must convert carefully. The article says the team tested a caption containing 4,096 rocket emoji and that the test passed; this was the team’s reported test, not a test independently performed for this article.

Telegram albums also change the meaning of a “post.” Uplika said an album consists of several messages. If the server stores only one message ID and deletes only that message, the remaining photos may stay published. The server’s stored representation and deletion logic need to account for all messages in the album.

TikTok: require the privacy choice

The team said TikTok’s privacy level had no default, so it made the value a required tool argument and checked the creator’s allowed options on each publish. This avoids silently selecting a privacy setting the creator did not permit. Uplika’s article also said TikTok was still in app review at the time; both the integration status and the reported API behavior can change.

Publishing is often asynchronous

Uplika said most platforms process media before a post becomes live. In its account, the publishing call could return immediately while the result arrived later. A server that reports success as soon as it accepts an upload risks telling the user a post is live before the platform has confirmed publication.

The article says Uplika supports wait: true, which holds the response until the platform confirms the post or a time budget expires. That is product behavior as described by the team, not an independently verified guarantee. The design trade-off is straightforward: return quickly and expose a pending result, or wait for confirmation at the cost of a longer-running request. Whichever approach is used, the response should distinguish acceptance, processing, and confirmed publication.

Make upstream failures readable to clients

Uplika reported that Cloudflare replaced origin 502 and 504 responses with its own error page and removed CORS headers, leaving browser clients unable to read the response body. The team said it returned 503 for upstream failures instead. The account illustrates a failure-mode concern: a proxy or CDN can change both the status response and whether a browser client can inspect it, so error handling must be designed for the complete route between the platform and the client.

What these lessons do—and do not—establish

Uplika’s account is useful as a concrete set of implementation warnings: remote authorization has a distinct flow from direct API-key access; platform text and identifier formats need platform-aware handling; publishing may require an asynchronous completion model; and tool metadata and upstream errors deserve explicit design and tests.

It does not provide comparative reliability or performance measurements, a security audit, or a comparison with other hosted MCP services. It also does not establish current platform availability, current review status, or current pricing. The article says the service had a free plan, but gives no basis for treating that as current pricing information.
