LangSmith is LangChain’s agent engineering platform for tracing LLM application runs, inspecting production behavior, evaluating outputs, and using those findings to improve an application. It is designed to work with more than LangChain frameworks, but whether it is a fit depends on your instrumentation, data-governance requirements, expected trace volume, retention needs, and budget.
What is LangSmith?
LangChain describes LangSmith as a framework-agnostic platform for building, testing, deploying, and monitoring AI agents and LLM applications. Its observability features collect execution traces and support cost and latency monitoring, evaluations, trajectory monitoring, and alerts. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent performance assessment. LangChain’s LangSmith product page outlines the platform and its observability features.

The central idea is to connect what happened during an application run with how the result performed. A trace can show model calls, retrieved context, tool behavior, and other tracked steps. Teams can add human feedback and evaluation data, then use the resulting records to investigate issues or check whether a new version behaves better.
How does LangSmith tracing work?
A trace represents one execution of an application, such as an agent run, evaluator run, or playground session. It can contain multiple steps, including model calls and other events captured by the instrumentation. The pricing page defines a trace this way; it is not the same as one individual model call. #1 Best Overall
In practice, the useful question is what the trace lets your team inspect. LangChain describes traces that can include model inputs and outputs, retrieved context, tool activity, and feedback. That can help locate whether a poor response arose from retrieval, a tool interaction, or a model step—provided the integration captures the relevant information and your data-handling rules permit recording it.
Signals for production monitoring
LangChain lists token usage, latency percentiles, error rates, cost breakdowns, and feedback scores among the dashboard signals, along with online evaluations and tool or agent trajectory monitoring. It also describes webhook and PagerDuty alerting. Confirm that the signals and alert workflows you need are available for your integration and plan. LangSmith observability features

Offline and online evaluations serve different purposes
Offline evaluation compares a candidate version against known examples before release. It is useful for regression checks: run a stable set of cases, inspect scores or outputs, and look for changes before exposing the version to users.
Online evaluation scores live traffic after release. It can help surface behavior on requests for which no expected answer was written in advance. LangSmith describes both approaches as part of a workflow that feeds evaluation findings back into development. LangSmith platform overview
LangChain says the platform supports LLM-as-judge and code-based evaluations. These methods are not interchangeable: code-based checks suit criteria that can be stated deterministically, while judge-based scoring uses a model to assess outputs against criteria. Teams should decide what constitutes an acceptable result and review evaluation behavior for their use case rather than treating a score as proof of correctness.
Can you use LangSmith without LangChain?
Yes, according to LangChain, LangSmith supports applications built with the OpenAI SDK, Anthropic SDK, Vercel AI SDK, LlamaIndex, custom implementations, and OpenTelemetry, as well as LangChain and LangGraph applications. The vendor describes Python, TypeScript, Go, and Java SDKs. Integration coverage and setup can differ, so check the current documentation for your precise framework, SDK, and instrumentation path before committing. LangSmith integrations

Framework agnostic does not mean every stack automatically produces identical trace detail. Verify that the integration exposes the model calls, retrieved context, tools, feedback, and other events your team needs to debug and evaluate.

Can LangSmith be self-hosted?
LangChain describes cloud, hybrid, and self-hosted deployment arrangements, including options for customer-controlled infrastructure. Its product page says hosted data at smith.langchain.com is stored in GCP us-central-1, and describes Enterprise arrangements that can run on a customer Kubernetes cluster in AWS, GCP, or Azure. These are vendor descriptions; confirm current eligibility, data location, and contractual security commitments for the plan you are considering. LangSmith hosting options

The data-plane documentation describes Agent Servers and supporting services, including PostgreSQL persistence, Redis for communication and ephemeral metadata, secrets management, and autoscaling. It also distinguishes how traces are routed in cloud, hybrid, and self-hosted configurations. Infrastructure requirements and responsibilities depend on the arrangement; consult the current LangSmith data-plane documentation and your contract before treating an architecture description as a residency or compliance guarantee.

Pricing is commercial and can change. The pricing page reviewed for this article describes base trace retention of 14 days and extended retention of 180 days for an additional fee. A separate AWS Marketplace listing is for a self-hosted LangSmith Agent Engineering Platform package delivered through a Helm chart and supporting Amazon EKS. That specific listing states a $150,000 annual platform license plus a minimum $150,000 annual usage commitment. It is an enterprise marketplace offer, not a general price for LangSmith cloud or self-serve plans. AWS Marketplace listing

- Check instrumentation first: Confirm your exact framework or OpenTelemetry setup captures the trace details required for debugging and evaluation.
- Map evaluations to release practice: Decide which known cases should be used for offline regression checks and whether live traffic needs online scoring.
- Define production signals: Identify the cost, latency, error, feedback, trajectory, and alerting views your team needs, then verify their availability for your setup.
- Resolve data requirements: Compare cloud, hybrid, and self-hosted arrangements with your data-location, security, and operational requirements; validate specifics in current documentation and contracts.
- Estimate commercial needs: Forecast trace volume and retention, then review current plan terms rather than assuming the published retention details are permanent.
LangSmith is most relevant when a team wants a connected workflow from execution traces to testing and production evaluation. “Essential” is not a universal verdict: teams should make the decision against their stack, governance constraints, operational needs, and current commercial terms.
