It published implementation specifications showing how vendors could use existing open standards together; ISMA was not itself a formal technical standard.
What was the Internet Streaming Media Alliance?
Apple, Cisco, Kasenna, Philips, Sun Microsystems, and IBM joined to form ISMA in 2000. The alliance aimed to encourage open standards and interoperability while leaving room for competition among vendors. Streaming Media reported the formation on December 13, 2000.

Its purpose was practical: reduce incompatibility between vendors’ implementations of audio and video standards, so streaming systems could work together over IP networks and the Internet.
Was ISMA a streaming standard?
No. ISMA published specifications for interoperable implementations based on standards that already existed; it did not create a standalone streaming standard. In a 2001 report, ISMA president Tom Jacobs, then a Sun Microsystems director, put it plainly: “ISMA is not a standard.” That report covered the release of ISMA 1.0.

The alliance’s ISMA 1.0.1 specification described its goal as providing a framework for using existing open standards to build interoperable audio and video systems over IP.
What did ISMA specifications cover?
ISMA 1.0: MPEG-4 interoperability
Released by 2001, ISMA 1.0 was described as an MPEG-4 interoperability specification. Its focus was not simply defining a codec, but helping different vendors implement compatible streaming systems using MPEG-4 and existing standards.

ISMA 2.0: a broader streaming system
The 2.0 specification, reported as available in January 2005, retained the broad architecture and functionality of version 1.0. It described a media server sending content over an IP network to a media client, while allowing components such as storage, transcoders, and caches or proxies along the way. The ISMA 2.0 specification addressed media formats, transport, control, description, and storage.

Why was ISMA formed?
ISMA’s specification documents describe a problem of fragmented implementations and a lack of widely adopted ways to transmit audio and video over the Internet. The alliance sought to make systems more interoperable by specifying how existing open standards could be used together. That rationale comes from the period’s documents, not from a current evaluation of streaming technology.

Historical reports and specification documents establish activity from the alliance between 2000 and 2005. A 2005 account described ISMA as a nonprofit focused on accelerating the adoption and deployment of open standards for streaming rich media. The report also noted the availability of ISMA 2.0 in January 2005.
