“Lines of resolution” describes how much fine image detail can be distinguished, but its exact meaning depends on context. It may refer to TV lines (TVL), the number of raster scan lines in a video format, or a measured camera system’s ability to reproduce detail. Those are related concepts, not interchangeable ways of counting pixels.
What does “lines of resolution” mean?
The phrase is used for a limit on visible detail. In analog television, it commonly means the finest alternating black-and-white line pattern that can still be distinguished, expressed as a count across a span equal to the picture height. In digital-camera testing, resolution means the ability of the camera system to depict picture detail, measured with specified methods and patterns.

Because the phrase is ambiguous, a resolution figure is meaningful only when you know what was counted or tested, in which direction, and under what conditions.

| Term | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| TV lines (TVL) | Distinguishable detail in a test pattern, conventionally normalized to a picture-height span. | A measured visual-detail limit, not a count of raster rows. Analog Devices’ analog-video explainer describes the convention. |
| Raster scan lines | The rows drawn or transmitted in a video frame or signal format. | A format dimension; it does not establish how much detail the whole system visibly resolves. Analog Devices distinguishes format resolution from visual resolution. |
| Pixel dimensions | The number of addressable pixels in an image or frame, typically stated as width by height. | Describes the digital image grid, but not by itself the detail actually captured or displayed. |
| Camera-system resolution | The detail a camera system can depict, assessed with defined test methods. | ISO 12233:2024 cautions against treating resolution as simply the number of addressable photoelements. ISO 12233:2024 defines the measurement context. |
These distinctions matter because a signal or image can have stated dimensions while the lens, sensor, transmission path, processing, or display limits the detail visible in practice.

How are TV lines of resolution measured?
A test chart presents alternating black and white lines with progressively tighter spacing. The finest pattern at which the lines remain distinguishable determines the result. For the familiar horizontal TVL convention, the count is normalized to a width equal to the picture’s height, which allows measurements to be compared without simply counting all lines across a widescreen image. The same general approach can be applied to vertical detail.
TVL is therefore a test-pattern convention for resolved detail. It is not the number of horizontal raster rows, and a TVL value should be read alongside its measurement direction and test conditions.

What does resolution mean in digital-camera testing?
ISO 12233:2024, the current fifth edition listed by ISO, defines resolution as a measure of a camera system’s ability to depict picture detail. The standard includes visual-resolution and spatial-frequency-response methods; different methods can produce different results, so a number without its method and capture conditions is incomplete.
ISO’s directional terminology is tied to image orientation. For a landscape image, horizontal resolution is measured along the longer image dimension, generally using vertical or near-vertical chart features. Vertical resolution is measured along the shorter dimension, generally using horizontal or near-horizontal features. In the visual-resolution method, the limit is the spatial frequency at which a person can no longer distinguish all the individual black and white lines in a pattern.

What a camera resolution result can tell you
- It describes performance of the tested camera system or component, not just the sensor’s advertised pixel count.
- It depends on the chart, measurement method, image processing and capture conditions.
- For a fair comparison, check that the method and conditions are comparable, and note whether the result concerns horizontal or vertical resolution.
A resolution chart can help measure a camera system, but it is not needed to understand the term. ISO specifies charts and patterns for this purpose; its public page offers informative content, while the full standard is paywalled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is TVL the same as scan lines or pixels?
No. TVL expresses distinguishable test-pattern detail using a picture-height normalization. Scan lines count rows in a video raster, while pixel dimensions count positions in a digital image grid. Neither scan-line count nor pixel count alone guarantees that the corresponding amount of detail will be visibly resolved.
