For a straightforward starting point, choose a Linux VPS with at least 4 GB of RAM. Anthropic’s published Claude Code minimum is 4 GB; DigitalOcean’s listed Basic Droplet with 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM, 80 GiB SSD and 4,000 GiB transfer is one concrete reference configuration, priced at $24 per month on its pricing page accessed October 7, 2026. That makes it a useful baseline, not a proven overall winner: Anthropic has not published a head-to-head VPS benchmark.
What VPS is best for Claude Code?
There is no evidence-based universal winner in the available provider information. Start with a Linux VM that meets Anthropic’s requirements, then compare the current price and region, CPU allocation, storage, transfer allowance and support. Choose a familiar provider and a region that suits your latency, data-location and budget needs.

For a modest personal project or one session, DigitalOcean’s listed 4-GiB Basic Droplet offers a clear point of comparison. Its listed configuration is 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM, 80 GiB SSD and 4,000 GiB transfer for $24/month. These are the values shown on DigitalOcean’s pricing page accessed October 7, 2026; confirm the live configuration, billing terms and regional availability before purchasing. The published figure alone does not establish how it performs against another provider or workload.

Hetzner’s cloud documentation describes data center locations in the US, Singapore and Europe, and both shared- and dedicated-resource server types. It identifies dedicated instances as suitable for applications or development environments, but the overview does not establish a current price. How much RAM and CPU does Claude Code need?
Anthropic lists Ubuntu 20.04 or later, Debian 10 or later, 4 GB or more of RAM, an internet connection, and Bash, Zsh or Fish as preferred shells. It also lists macOS and Windows with WSL or Git for Windows; for a VPS, Ubuntu or Debian are straightforward documented Linux choices. The 4 GB figure is a stated minimum, not a promise of smooth performance for every project. Anthropic’s Claude Code setup documentation
The sources do not specify a universal CPU size beyond the example provider configuration, nor do they list a GPU requirement. Build times, dependency installation, multiple concurrent sessions or agents, and other services on the same VM can increase resource needs. If those workloads matter, allow more RAM or CPU according to what the project actually runs; any amount above Anthropic’s minimum is workload-dependent rather than an Anthropic requirement.

Anthropic’s setup page lists Node.js 18+ in its system requirements and also documents a native binary installation method marked alpha. Check the current instructions for the installation method you intend to use, since prerequisites and status may change.
When is a VPS worth paying for?
A VPS is useful when you want a separate, persistent Linux environment, or need work to continue while your own computer is off. It also gives you a server environment you can provision independently of your everyday machine, at the cost of a recurring bill and responsibility for basic server upkeep.

If your actual need is to reach a Claude Code session running on your own computer, a rented server may be unnecessary. Anthropic Remote Control connects remotely to a session on your machine; that session ends when the machine stops running it. How should you choose between the available options?
| Option | What is established | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet | Pricing page accessed October 7, 2026 lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM, 80 GiB SSD, 4,000 GiB transfer and $24/month. | You want a clearly specified 4-GiB reference configuration. Check live region availability and billing details. |
| Hetzner cloud server | Documentation describes US, Singapore and European locations and shared or dedicated resource types. Current pricing depends on server type and public-IP selection; the overview directs readers to the live pricing page. | Region and shared-versus-dedicated resources suit your needs, and you have confirmed current total cost. |
| Anthropic Remote Control | Provides remote access to a session running on your own machine; the session ends when that machine stops running it. | You need remote interaction with a personal session and can keep the host machine available. |
| Anthropic self-hosted environments | Anthropic announced a public beta for Team and Enterprise organizations, using fixed or on-demand runners on infrastructure the organization controls. Eligibility and availability can change; the announcement excludes ZDR organizations. | Your organization has a network, tooling or compliance reason to control execution infrastructure and can own runner operations. |
For most enterprises seeking operational simplicity, Anthropic recommends its hosted offering. It says self-hosting requires an engineering team to set up and operate the environment, including maintaining runner images and, for on-demand mode, running the orchestrator. These obligations concern Anthropic’s self-hosted runner deployment, not every individual VPS. Anthropic’s self-hosting and Remote Control announcement

What to check before ordering
- Operating system and memory: Select a supported Linux distribution and at least 4 GB RAM.
- Workload headroom: Account for builds, dependencies, concurrent work and any other services sharing the VM; there is no universal higher-size recommendation in the cited requirements.
- Location and resource model: Compare data center region and whether CPU resources are shared or dedicated. For Hetzner, verify the selected server type and public-IP charges.
- Total recurring cost: Check the live plan price and any applicable storage, transfer, networking or support charges. Treat a displayed price as a dated listing, not a guarantee of future billing.
- Authentication: Claude Code setup supports Anthropic Console authentication, Claude Pro or Max subscriptions, and enterprise integrations such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. Check current account eligibility and authentication guidance; a server setup may require completing an authentication flow and securely retaining credentials. Anthropic says Claude Code securely stores credentials.
