A VPN changes how network traffic travels; a blocking feature is a separate control layered onto the service. Its reach depends on what it checks, how it identifies threats, and whether it is active when you need it.
In plain terms, a VPN app routes your traffic through servers run by the provider. Some VPN apps encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server; not all do. Threat protection may filter certain destinations, but neither capability makes you anonymous or replaces keeping your device and accounts secure.

How does VPN threat protection work?
The phrase “VPN threat protection” is a product label, not a single standardized feature. A VPN tunnel and a threat-blocking feature do different jobs. The tunnel routes traffic through the VPN provider’s server and, when the app supports and uses encryption, protects the traffic on the segment between your device and that server. Filtering attempts to prevent a request from reaching a destination classified as harmful.
One way filtering can work is through DNS, the system that looks up domain names so a device can find the relevant network destination. CISA describes domain sinkholing as a denylist-based control: when a client makes a DNS query for a domain on the list, the DNS service answers in a way intended to prevent the client from reaching that domain. CISA’s 2025 remote-user guidance recommends using DNS services that filter malicious traffic.

That description is narrower than “the VPN scans everything you download.” A DNS-based feature works at the domain-lookup layer; the cited guidance and vendor description do not establish that VPN threat-protection features generally inspect every web address, file, or app action. Providers may implement features differently, so the label alone does not tell you what is checked or where the check happens.
For example, NordVPN describes its own malicious-website feature as blocking dangerous websites known to distribute malware or engage in other malicious activity. That is a vendor description of its feature, not an independent test of how often it detects threats. One provider’s explanation cannot establish what another provider’s similarly named feature does.
What can it help protect you from?
Some known malicious destinations
If a filtering service classifies a domain as malicious and your traffic uses that service, blocking or redirecting the DNS request can stop your device from reaching that domain through the filtered path. That can reduce exposure to destinations on the service’s denylist. It does not mean the service has identified every dangerous domain, every page on a domain, or every newly created threat.

Observation on the local network, for the encrypted VPN segment
When a VPN app properly encrypts traffic between the device and its VPN server, someone observing the local network—such as an operator of public Wi-Fi—has less access to the contents of that traffic on that segment. This protection is limited to the connection between those two points. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cautions that only some VPN apps encrypt data, so the presence of a VPN connection by itself is not proof that encryption is enabled.
A network operator’s view of your traffic
Routing traffic through a VPN can reduce what your local Wi-Fi operator or internet provider sees about the traffic. It shifts trust rather than eliminating it: the VPN provider operates the server your traffic passes through. The FTC advises consumers to examine a VPN app’s privacy practices and the permissions it requests.
Does a VPN protect you from malware?
Not in the comprehensive sense most people mean by “protect me from malware.” A destination blocker may prevent access to a domain it has identified as harmful. That is different from detecting and removing malicious software already on a device. The cited guidance and vendor description do not establish that domain filtering cleans an infected device, finds every malicious file, or prevents every route by which malware can arrive.

Think of blocking as a gate at a particular point in a connection, not a repair tool for the whole device. If a threat has already reached the device, or a malicious file is already present, a domain-blocking feature should not be treated as a scan or removal service. The cited guidance and vendor description do not establish that VPN threat protection provides those functions.

It may tell you that a destination was classified as harmful; it does not, by itself, show whether the device was infected or whether an account was compromised. Handle those as separate security questions rather than assuming the VPN has resolved them.
Does VPN threat protection block phishing sites?
It may block some phishing destinations if the service has classified the relevant domain and the request passes through its filtering mechanism. But no universal detection rate or guarantee that every phishing site will be blocked is established by the cited material. Domain lists and detection methods have limits; a site that is not on a denylist may not be stopped by a denylist-based control.

A VPN also cannot prevent a person from voluntarily sharing information with a website they can reach. The FTC notes that websites can still learn information users submit, and that VPN use does not make users fully anonymous. A network tunnel is not a judgment about whether a page is trustworthy, and a filtering feature should not be read as a promise to validate every link, message, or request for personal information.
What VPN threat protection does not promise
- Complete anonymity: A VPN changes the route and may change what the local network operator can observe, but websites can still receive information you provide. Trust also shifts to the VPN app and provider.
- Universal blocking: The cited guidance and vendor description describe filtering as a control, not a guarantee that all harmful domains, phishing pages, malware, or downloads will be detected.
- Device cleanup: Blocking a destination does not establish that malware already on a device has been found or removed.
- Protection from every network or VPN failure: CISA identifies vulnerabilities and misconfiguration as risks for remote-access VPNs. A VPN is infrastructure that can itself be exposed to security problems.
- Identical behavior across providers: “Threat protection” does not establish whether a feature checks domains, full URLs, downloads, or other traffic; whether it works with the tunnel off; or which systems and app versions it supports.
How to evaluate a VPN’s threat-protection feature
Before relying on a feature, look for precise answers to the questions below in the provider’s documentation and privacy materials. If the provider does not state a detail, do not infer it from the feature name or a broad promise to “block threats.”
- What exactly does it block? Find out whether the description covers domains, full URLs, downloads, or another kind of traffic. A statement about malicious domains does not prove that files are scanned.
- Where does the check happen? Determine whether the feature filters DNS requests, checks browser or app traffic, or performs on-device scanning. Those are different scopes. Do not treat one as evidence of the others.
- When is it active? Check whether filtering works only while the VPN tunnel is connected or also when it is off. If the documentation is silent, assume neither behavior.
- Which devices and versions are covered? Confirm the supported operating systems and app versions for your own devices. A feature’s availability on one platform does not establish availability on another.
- What data does the provider collect? Review privacy practices and the permissions requested by the app. A VPN routes traffic through provider-operated infrastructure, so understanding that relationship matters.
- Has the claim been independently tested? Distinguish a provider’s description of its own capability from independent testing. The cited sources do not provide a fair multi-provider comparison or independent effectiveness results.
How to use it without relying on it too much
- Check the app’s feature description. Identify the specific blocking function and its stated scope instead of assuming “threat protection” means full antivirus or phishing prevention.
- Confirm the feature is enabled and supported on your device. Use the provider’s current app instructions for your operating system and version. The cited guidance and vendor description do not establish a universal settings path, so a single menu route would be unreliable.
- Understand the connection state it requires. If the provider says the filter depends on the VPN tunnel, do not assume it continues working when that tunnel is off.
- Review privacy and permission choices. Decide whether the provider’s stated practices and requested access fit your needs before routing traffic through its service.
- Keep other security decisions separate. A block can help prevent a connection to a listed destination; it does not establish that a file is safe, that a device is clean, or that a website is trustworthy.
VPN infrastructure has risks of its own
VPNs are not invulnerable simply because they create a tunnel. CISA’s 2024 discussion of secure network access describes VPN limitations that include vulnerabilities, misconfiguration, and DNS spoofing. Its guidance on communications infrastructure recommends limiting exposure of VPN gateways and using strong cryptography. These are security recommendations for infrastructure, not consumer product test results, but they underline an important point: a VPN’s security depends on how its service is designed and maintained.
Best Value
For an individual user, that means the word “VPN” is not enough to establish that a particular app encrypts traffic, handles information appropriately, or has a well-secured service. The FTC’s 2018 consumer guidance specifically raises privacy practices and app permissions as matters to examine. Consider those alongside the scope of any blocking feature, not as substitutes for it.
How to interpret a block or a missed threat
If the feature blocks a site
A warning or block indicates that the service has treated a destination as harmful under its own classification and policy. It is a reason not to proceed casually, but it does not establish that the feature inspected your device or resolved an infection. Use the provider’s documented process if you believe a destination was misclassified; no universal appeal or exception procedure is established here.
If a suspicious site is not blocked
Absence of a warning is not a safety certification. The destination may not be covered by the service’s list or method, or the request may not be passing through the feature’s filtering path. The cited sources do not establish detection rates or a way to determine which explanation applies for a particular missed site. Do not infer that a page is safe solely because the VPN allowed it.
If the VPN connection fails or is misconfigured
Do not assume the VPN’s privacy or filtering protections remain active during a failure. Whether the app blocks traffic, reconnects, or leaves traffic using another route depends on its implementation; that behavior is not established by the cited sources. Check the provider’s documentation for connection-failure behavior and verify the app’s displayed state when protection matters.
What the available evidence can establish
The FTC’s 2018 consumer guidance supports the basic distinction between routing, encryption, privacy, and anonymity: VPN apps route traffic through provider servers; only some encrypt data; and using a VPN transfers trust rather than making a person anonymous. CISA’s 2025 remote-user guidance describes malicious-traffic filtering and DNS sinkholing as controls. CISA’s 2024 secure-network-access discussion and its communications-infrastructure guidance establish that VPN risks include vulnerabilities and configuration problems and recommend hardening measures. NordVPN’s support material provides one vendor’s description of its own malicious-website feature.
Those sources do not establish a universal feature definition, a comparative ranking of VPN providers, a detection percentage, or proof that a given feature catches every harmful site. Treat specific capability and privacy claims as provider-specific unless they have been independently verified.
